I'm suprised no one has mentioned Brian Sanderson's work yet. I'm not a huge fantasy fan (I'm really more of a sci-fi guy), but I was totally taken in by Sanderson's Elantris, so I checked out his Mistborn Trilogy and was NOT disappointed. My H/H Fantasy list looks something like this:

      Elantris by Brian Sanderson
Mistborn Trilogy by Brian Sanderson (The Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages)
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind
      Legend by David Gemmell
Hour of the Dragon by Robert E. Howard
      The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Heirs of Ash Trilogy by Rich Wulf (Voyage of the Mourning Dawn, Flight of the Dying Sun, Rise of the Seventh Moon)
Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

I know that’s only nine, but the only other name that immediately spang to mind was Simon Hawke’s Reluctant Sorcerer trilogy, which is much more parody than HF.

I also recommend David Gemmell’s Troy Series (Lord of the Silver Bow, Shield of Thunder, Fall of Kings) but I’d classify that as quasi-historical fiction and not really HF per se.

Chronicles of Narnia, Name of the Wind and The Hobbit were already in. I shall put the already in list also in the first post to make it more clear.

          Betegeuze's nominations continued:

          8. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
          9. First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson
