I recall this lawyer who made a career ending move back to being a pilot and then back to the practicing law having the same rise in rank on JAG.

I loved SG1 because for the most part they were careful about these kinds of nuances.

Wikipedia: In the Marine Corps, enlisted ranks above Sergeant are referred to as Staff Non-Commissioned Officers (Staff NCOs or SNCOs). These ranks, Staff Sergeant through Sergeant Major, are always referred to by their full rank and never merely as Sergeant. Gunnery Sergeants are commonly addressed as simply "Gunny" informally. A Sergeant in the Marine Corps is never called Sarge, officially or informally.

Master Sergeants are addressed as Master Sergeant or Top at the preference of the Marine wearing the rank and dependent on the MOS community. This privilege is usually extended to NCOs or SNCOs and above, and even Marines that are the same rank or higher. Master Gunnery Sergeants follow the same protocol but are commonly referred to as Master Guns or Master Gunny. First Sergeants and Sergeants Major are never referred to as top.
Well as a US Army veteran who was never around any USMC NCOs my guess is I would have used US Army standard untill corrected. Which means that any Sergeant rank under First Sergeant would be addressed as Sergeant. I'm not sure how USAF troops operate in day to day normal talk. With no buck sergeant rank are Senior Airman sometimes called Sergeant?

I do know we called Specialist 4s who were tank gunners on command tanks Sergeants even though they had not completed their training or time in grade to be promoted.

A Capt. usually has 4-6 years of service. So she picked up Col. in about 14-16 years, which is still pretty fast. Although it's not surprising considering that she either saved or aided in saving the world 7-8 times now....

I knew a guy who advanced 5 ranks in 11 years... at the time a record and he did it amazingly enough by actually being very good at his job. He had minimum time in rank and was then promoted.

I can see Sam as being in the same situation.
