S - Surmak Ren was a Bajoran male who was born on Bajor in 2319 to Surmak Hoek and Surmak Stimson. Surmak graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Bajor in 2342, genetic programming being his major field of study.

Following his graduation, Surmak was a member of the Akira Advanced Genetics Research Unit where he was recognized for his work in viral function studies. In 2351 he worked as an assistant to Dekon Elig, who created the aphasia virus booby trap.

Surmak was later suspected by Cardassian Intelligence of supporting various Bajoran terrorist groups including the Kohn-Ma. Surmak was later arrested when informants in the Higa Metar revealed that he was a secret member of that sect and was responsible for several disruptive acts committed by that sect. He was arrested several times in early 2356, but released for insufficient evidence. He was convicted of terrorist activity by the Cardassian Regional Court in 2357 on charges of terrorist activity stemming from the kidnapping of Gul Spumco. Later that year, he was imprisoned on Velos VII.

Surmak was later repatriated to Bajor on stardate 46302.8, where he became chief administrator of the Ilvian Medical Complex. That year, the aphasia virus, which had previously been planted on Terok Nor during the Occupation of Bajor, was inadvertently activated by the crew of Deep Space 9.

In order to save the crew, Major Kira Nerys contacted Surmak to inquire about an antidote. At first he was reluctant to help, but Kira kidnapped him and transported him onto the station. This caused him to become infected as well, thus forcing him to develop an antidote.

T- Tamarians are a bald, orange, humanoid species of the Alpha Quadrant who speak primarily (if not entirely) by metaphor. Their metaphoric language is based on the Tamarian ancient history, making it virtually incomprehensible to anyone without background knowledge of the history. It is also inferred that they have limited, or no, concept of individuality. They are a highly advanced species capable of space travel, though to what degree is unknown.

V - Voth are a reptilian humanoid species descended from Earth's dinosaurs, most likely a Hadrosaurid. The Voth escaped Earth when the environment was wrecked by an asteroid impact 65 million years ago. They travelled across the galaxy, eventually settling in the Delta Quadrant. The Voth are extremely advanced technically, possessing transwarp drive systems.

Voth territory seems to be in close proximity to Borg space. The Borg have been able to assimilate individual Voth (see the Voth page of Memory Alpha), but the technology of the Voth civilization seems at least as advanced as that of the Borg, and (given the relative ages of the two species) may be considerably more advanced. Whatever the case, they have obviously managed to avoid wide-scale assimilation (no easy feat). The Voth's contact with the Borg may have contributed to their strong antipathy towards mammalian humanoids.

As a society, the Voth are dogmatic recluses who have spun a fictional story ("The Doctrine") about their own past in order to create social cohesion. Although they have been away from Earth for 65 million years and have achieved much technologically, they have never been able to establish a permanent planetary home. The Voth have at least one enormous city ship for housing their government (and possibly a large portion of their civilization).

In the 24th century, the Voth leadership threatened to destroy the crew of Voyager and a rogue Voth scientist, if they refused to disavow evidence that the Voth originated on Earth. This was the so-called "Distant Origin" theory. At the close of contact between the Voth and Humans in the 24th Century, it was not considered hopeful that the two sister species would reunify anytime soon.

X - Xaranites are a reptilian humanoid species, they are never fully seen, but have green scaled faces. Xaranites work for the Cardassians as smugglers. It is possible that Xaranites are a subjugate species of the Cardassian Union, which may explain why a Xaranite captain allowed Sisko to search his cargo when Gul Dukat ordered him to.

Y - Yarka was a former member of the Vedek Assembly. In 2371, several Cardassian scientists came to the Bajoran sector in an attempt to establish permanent communications to the Gamma Quadrant through the Bajoran wormhole. Yarka became convinced that Trakor's Third Prophecy was coming true and that the Celestial Temple would be destroyed. He urged Commander Benjamin Sisko not to assist the Cardassians in this venture, though Sisko ultimately chose not to follow Yarka's warnings.

After the wormhole was not destroyed, Yarka concluded that he had misinterpreted the prophecy and apologised to Sisko for allowing his mistrust of the Cardassians to blind him to the Prophets' will. He did, however, add that there were signs that Trakor's Fourth Prophecy would soon come to pass.

A - Alenis Grem was a Bajoran who worked in the Bajoran Central Archives in the 24th century. In 2371, she conducted a study on the Elemspur detention center for the Archives. She discovered that the Archives said that Kira Nerys was at Elemspur for seven days in 2361. Alenis contacted Kira to tell her. The two arranged to meet. Kira never reached the meeting point, as she was captured by the Obsidian Order.

B - Ba'ku people were a technologically advanced humanoid civilization. In the early 21st century, the race developed the means of building weapons of mass destruction and was on the brink of self-annihilation. A small enlightened group of the Ba'ku people escaped this horror and found an isolated planet.

This group of Ba'ku followed a simple way of life and disdained the use of technology. (As shown in the film Star Trek: Insurrection, however, the Ba'ku still possessed some form of technology and the ability to use it in emergencies, since they had attempted to repair the damaged Data.) At first the Ba'ku were unaware of the metaphasic radiation in the planet's rings, which caused their aging process to significantly decelerate, although it was later discovered and cherished.

The Ba'ku society consisted of strong bonds between each individual as there were less than a thousand living in a village. Their simpler way of life eventually prompted some of the younger Ba'ku villagers - who wanted to explore the galaxy with offlanders - to rebel against their elders, and an attempt was made to take over the village. When they were unsuccessful, they were exiled and eventually became the Son'a people.

In 2375 peace on the Ba'ku planet was restored, and several members of the Son'a returned to their families.

C - Chalan Aroya was an Bajoran woman who owned the Celestial Cafe on Deep Space 9 in 2372.

In that year she visited Garak's Clothiers to obtain a new dress. Elim Garak, hoping to set her up with Odo, called the security officer to his shop.

Several days later, after Odo had been transformed into a humanoid by the Founders, Chalan visited him in Garak's again, to tell him how sorry she was.

D -Drayans are a xenophobic race from the Delta Quadrant. The crew of the USS Voyager in Star Trek: Voyager discovered the Drayan elders when one of its shuttlecraft crashed on one of the Drayan moons.
Drayans live on Drayan II, and have little to no contact with outside races. They have a very closed society, due to their species unique attribute of aging. It is uncertain how Drayans are born: They are born looking as if they are elderly, around the human age of 100. From there, they age backwards, growing younger in body as they grow older in wisdom and experience.
When they appear to be the age of a six-year-old human child (making them over 90 in Drayan years), they are shuttled over to one of the moons of Drayan II, where they essentially die. Their bodies disappear, leaving only their clothes behind. This journey is viewed as a sacrament.
Basically humanoid in appearance, Drayans have a coloured line down their forehead, the only visible mark that distinguishes them from humans.

    E-Excelsior, USS

The prototype in the long serving Excelsior class vessels. The original Excelsior was placed under the command of Captain Scott Styles. Dubbed "The Great Experiment" she was fitted with an experimental transwarp drive, and was supposed to be the fastest ship in Starfleet. However, it was sabotaged by Montgomery Scott during the command staff of the USS Enterprise's attempt at hijacking that vessel. She later encountered difficulty when the Whale Probe attacked Earth. Eventually Hakiru Sulu was given command of the ship. Under his command the Excelsior was the first ship to respond to the disaster on the Klingon moon of Praxis. Later when James T. Kirk and Dr. Leonard McCoy were falsely imprisoned in the Klingon penal colony of Rura Penthe she attempted a rescue, but was prevented from doing so by Kang (the event would later mentally scar a young lieutenant Tuvok). Later she came to the Enterprise's rescue, which was fighting a cloaked Klingon bird of prey over Khitomer.

Hirogen. A humanoid race native to the delta quadrant that believes in the hunt of other sentient species. They collect trophies of these species and scour the galaxy looking for ever more trophies and conquests. Their nomadic nature has led them to losing their homeworld, and having certain members of their population wanting to come together and settle a planet so they can rebuild their culture.

J - Jaro Essa was a Bajoran politician who served as minister in the Bajoran Provisional Government in 2370. He was also the leader of the Alliance for Global Unity that sought to remove the Federation from the Bajoran system. He attempted to bring down the Provisional Government and install himself as leader of Bajor.

In 2370, Jaro appointed Li Nalas to the post of Bajoran liaison officer on Deep Space 9 with the designation of navarch, following his return from Cardassia IV. He had Kira kidnapped when she came too close to discovering his plot. Jaro revealed to her that he was the leader of the Circle, and that he assigned Li Nalas to the station so the war hero wouldn't interfere with Jaro's coup.

He was buying weapons from the Kressari who were a front for the Cardassians who were trying to undermine the Bajoran government. He believed that if Bajor was heavily armed, it would not need anyone's protection. Bajor could order the Federation out. Jaro was assisted in his dealings by Vedek Winn Adami, General Krim and Colonel Day. His plan failed when Kira and Jadzia Dax revealed to the Bajoran Ministers that the Cardassians were secretly behind the arming of the Circle and provided evidence to prove it.

Klingon- A warrior race in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants of the Galaxy. They favor the war and the battle. Their empire was founded by the mythical figure Kahless, who has since been cloned to have a roll in Klingon affairs again.
They believe that they killed their gods, and have had dubious relations with the Federation in the past, but have since managed to form an alliance with them that has been responsible for winning several major wars over the course of the 24th century.

L - Li Nalas was a leader of one of Bajor's many resistance cells during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, and a revered war hero. He was considered the greatest Bajoran resistance fighter ever.

Li earned his reputation by slaying the infamous Gul Zarale in an intense duel. The story was told and retold among the Bajoran population until it was transformed into a gripping tale of patriotic courage. Li Nalas' career as a resistance fighter ended with his capture in 2360. Although his body was never found, he was presumed dead until 2370, when he was rescued from the Hutet labor camp on Cardassia IV by Major Kira Nerys of the Bajoran Militia.

Upon his return to Deep Space 9, he became very uncomfortable with his hero status, and attempted to secretly leave the station for the Gamma Quadrant. Discovered by Commander Benjamin Sisko, he explained that the stories of his heroism were wrong. In reality, he had stumbled across the bathing Cardassian and was forced to shoot him. Li confided with Sisko that he had always felt uncomfortable with being an accidental hero. Sisko persuaded him to return to Bajor, which was on the verge of civil war.

Shortly after his return to Bajor, Li was given both the honorary title of Navarch and Kira's position as Bajoran liaison officer on board Deep Space 9, much to his embarrassment. This was done by Minister Jaro, who wanted to get Kira out of a position of power and to get Li off Bajor so that he would not influence Jaro's plot to take over the government.

His rescue proved to be just in the nick of time, as he was able to play a pivotal role in preventing a disastrous coup d'état orchestrated by the Alliance for Global Unity. He helped rescue Kira from the insurgents, and helped defend the station against General Krim's troops, who attempted to take the station by force. After capturing Krim, Li was able to explain that the coup was being orchestrated by the Cardassians. Krim told his troops to stand down. Li was killed while saving Sisko from an attack by Colonel Day Kannu, and as a result, became a hero both in legend and reality.
