Looks like it owes a lot to Day After Tomorrow, 28 Days Later, and the brilliant novel Earth Abides.
I do like Charlize Theron, and Viggo Mortenson is a fantastic actor so maybe it's worth checking out.
"A society grows great when old men plant trees, the shade of which they know they will never sit in. Good people do things for other people. That's it, the end." -- Penelope Wilton in Ricky Gervais's After Life
wow, I got this book as a gift last year, but i never read it. I guess now is a good time!
You know what this is? It's an old movie called Panic in Year Zero! According to IMDb, here's the premise of that movie:
Of course, in this movie they add in lots of dirt, grime, drama (as in desperation, shouting, running, and panicking), CG flames and explosions, etc. etc., but the premise seems technically the same, right down to the 'family has to survive' idea, which is much different than the 'person has to survive' idea. While on a fishing trip, Harry Baldwin (Ray Milland) and his family hear an explosion and realize that Los Angeles has been leveled by a nuclear attack. Looters and killers are everywhere. Escaping to the hills with his family, he sets about the business of surviving in a world where, he knows, the old ideals of humanity will be first casualties. Not one to give up, he holds up a store for supplies and hides the family in a cave.
