Mass Effect maybe?

Ok i have known this for ages but only could just be bothered to post it seeing as it is a bank holiday here in England.
Anyway for those of you who have played Mass Effect you may have seen the lead character Shepperd?
I thought this was cool as you can roam about the galaxy in your ship landing on any planet you want and meeting new aliens and they call you shepperd
Now the coolest thing is that when you first create your character his first name is John?
Would you say it is a reference to Stargate Atlantis?
Or mere coincidence seeing as John is a common name?

Other examples could be 'Jack Carter' in Eureka & 'Jack Sheppard' in Lost.
I don't think it's a reference to stargate, especially in Lost

I have Mass Effect and have wondered that myself on occasion, but i think its just a coincidence, although it would be nice if it wasn't.

lvl 36 now, the other ones I've already got on top level.

The game is just amazing if you really like the game, buy the books, they're great.

I know this is off topic but Mass Effect is not short.
It is so long i spent 27 hours playing the game and not doing one main story mission when i got to the Citadell.
There are so many side missions it is rediculous but is not short.

The name seems to me to be a random fluke. It is not a reference to the show. However i can be wrong.
