BEST FIRST QUARTER EVER AMONG WOMEN 18 - 34

SCI FI Posts Tenth Consecutive Quarter of Growth Among Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 Continuing Momentum Among Women Viewers


NEW YORK - March 31, 2009 – Propelled by Battlestar Galactica, Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International, SCI FI soared into 5th place among basic cable entertainment networks in Adults 25-54 (665,000) in March, improving over last March's #8 ranking.

The network posted impressive gains across the demo board, leaping 10 percent among Women 18-34 (110,000), seven percent among Men 18-49 (327,000) and Adults 18-34 (228,000), six percent among Men 25-54 (381,000), five percent among Adults 18-49 (592,000), and four percent among total viewers (1,235,000).

Continuing the sizzling momentum among women viewers that has driven the prime audience up to 45 percent female among total viewers, the First Quarter marked the channel's 10th straight quarter of growth among Women 18-49 (261,000) and Women 25-54 (290,000), and was SCI FI's best first quarter ever among Women 18 -34.

In 1Q, Ghost Hunters International and Ghost Hunters combined to seize the #1 spot in the Wednesday 9PM (ET/PT) time period among Women 25-54 (756,000) as well as Adults 18-49 (1.3 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.4 million).

The season five premiere of Ghost Hunters on March 11 marked the program's best season premiere ever in the key demos with more than three million total viewers and a 2.15 HH rating, 1.8 million Adults 18-49 and 1.9 million Adults 25-54.

The fourth and final season of the award-winning Battlestar Galactica captured its Friday 10PM (ET/PT) time slot among Men 18-49 (1.0 million) and Men 25-54 (1.1 million).

Woman 18 to 34 huh? Heck that is what I am looking for, and so it SCI FI er um SyFy.

Makes you wonder why most of the cast for SGU is majority male and under 49 yo.

Aren't Ratings fun people? You would think it's just a simple number like a 1.2 HH rating, HELL NO!!!

Why does Ghost Hunters do so well? I would just once see GH switch places on Friday night with any show, should be interesting results. LOL.

From a financial standpoint, they know what they are doing. Ghost Hunters? Cheap reality crap for the masses. Now, where being the SCIENCE FICTION CHANNEL is concerned, they have no clue, which is why they decided to change their name/mission altogether.

They're changing their mission because they don't want to be a dedicated science fiction channel any more, not because they don't know how to be. As for the 'mission', that's just spin anyway, and so was the idea that they have some affinity for science fiction in the first place. They're a business that saw a niche and filled it. Their goals are to make money, not stay true to the genre, so as long as they're doing well from a financial standpoint they're not failing at anything, because ultimately nothing else matters, no matter how much some fans like to believe it does.

Science fiction isnt just about being on spaceships exploring space and meeting aliens. Theres room for Present day stuff like X-files and stargate, and Earth bound stuff and ghosts. As long as theres even a half-arsed attempt to explain it with science, or use far out science to build a plot it fits.

Grats to Syfy for getting a boost in ratings, somebody should get a raise!

They never were intended to be solely science fiction. Even when they launched the network their description was to run "science fiction, fantasy, and horror".

One of their first programs acquired were reruns of Dark Shadows.

I agree with you about science fiction not only being about spaceships and aliens. Anyone who actually follows literary science fiction--you know, books and short stories--knows that the field hasn't been dominated by that for a long time.

In fact, the "spaceship, aliens, and rayguns" science fiction is labeled "space opera" in literary circles and it doesn't necessarily have a prestigious reputation.

It's the reality dreck that is, well, dreck.... shows about scaring people, etc.

And this is just more PR spin from SciFi .... but at least Howe didn't open his mouth and insert foot this time

ANd more channels are going with reality crap (and 99% of it is crud) because it's CHEAP. It all boils down to cost, and if that paranormal cooking show appears, well, I'll have to sue cuz I thought of it first
