cruel to compare him with Edison and Einstein for his intensely disliked them both lol, but I think it was (apologies for the pun) a stroke of genius to resurrect a character like Nikola Tesla. The show desperately needed character and, its RL inconsistencies aside, JY's portrayal is a much appreciated breath of fresh air.

Edison & Einstein were alive during Tesla's time, it's only natural to compare them.

Also, since JY's played Tesla Before, I hope he wouldn't let the writers change Tesla too much.

A Character Dissertation: Nikolas Tesla

I was surprised when I saw that Sanctuary had chosen to create a character not only based on but named after the famous Croatian-American inventor. The “father of modern electricity” and “the man who powered the second industrial revolution” is not someone with whom a flirty and ego-centric vampire is usually associated. The major problem stems from the fact that Nikolas Tesla never attended or taught at Oxford or even set foot on the English Isles in his entire life. Disregarding that little tidbit there are some interesting characteristics to take note of:

For the last 30 years of his life Tesla worked on a “Death Ray” machine. He spoke of it often and tried to interest governments in his weapon that would “end all war.” These actions over shadowed his invention of the radio and AC electric current. Being labeled a “mad scientist” he was ostracized from the scientific community and died alone and poor. The lack of recognition received by Tesla during his own lifetime has made him a tragic and inspirational character well suited to dramatic fiction. Tesla has particularly been seen in science fiction where his inventions are well suited. The impact of the technologies invented by Nikola Tesla are a recurring theme in genre of alternate technology science-fiction.

The Nikolas Tesla portrayed seems to have fixed his mental health issues. The real Tesla fell in love with a pigeon and after its death appears to have suffered a breakdown and would produce no more scientific research or inventions until his death in 1943. The significance of the man depicted by Sanctuary cannot be emphasized enough; it might as well be Edison or Einstein.

Which is exactly why I bow to his brilliance...so amazing and yet SO underappreciated

Although we don't know yet if the Tesla on the show has "fixed" his mental issues, though...he's only been in 2 eps, and from the tiny bits I've picked up, there are definitely hints that the problems are still there. Like, he does wipe his hands after touching people (except Helen ), and he was clearly VERY disturbed by Watson's death (probably remembering his brother's death, which was a major source of psychological trauma for him). And we do know he's afraid of death (he was scared to get the key in "Rev. pt. 2" b/c he was scared that the lightning would kill him). Not that all people aren't afraid of death somewhat, but given the kind of trauma his brother's death put him through, he's probably more afraid than "normal".

Also, the thing about him being a vampire is apparently rooted in history...just a bit...in the book Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla, historian Marc J. Seifer claims that Edison, upon meeting Tesla, asked him if he "had ever tasted human flesh" (as a joke, of course, but it's still funny ), possibly b/c Edison knew that Transylvania was somewhere in close proximity to Tesla's birthplace in Eastern Europe. And I read somewhere that some people started some crazy rumors that he was actually a vampire. Not that that was actually true, but it works for the show

Oh, and supposedly, Tesla's family clan (originally called "Draganic"), had a name change to Tesla b/c the word referred to some type of sharp instrument like an ax. And apparently the family's teeth resembled this instrument.


Anyhoo...I hope they bring SOME of his psychosis into the show, b/c it is part of who the real guy was. Although it's quite sad
