    Ship Size.

I've always wondered. Why have the earth ships (303/304s) always been smaller than enemy ships? Every other ship from the ha'tak (just a tiny bit bigger) to the hive ship, which is a lot bigger. Other ships build by human races are much bigger. The ancients were humans and the aurora class is huge.

The 304s are not weaker, they are stronger than a hive, possibly an aurora.

    why is this?

Earth doesn't have the infrastructure to build huge ships. Also, the ships of other races serve many purposes. Ha'taks are used to intimidate enemies of the Goa'uld, they transport troops, and they have to satisfy the hedonism of the Goa'uld. The Wraith live in Hive ships.

304 were mainly for transport or a carrier ship to the pegasus galaxy (the daedalus) but now with the new upgrades their more like a very powerful carrier ship

once the time is right earth will start to biuld more bigger and complex ships, they have just started biulding ships over less than 10 years, you cant expect them to advance that far with just a few hand of people knowing about the stargate program

Rather than placing more resources into 304s (phoenix) surely with all the asgard knowledge they could build an o'neill class vessel with asgard beams to compliment the pulse weapons. Surely that ship alone could take down its fair share of hives.

As for not many people knowing about it, if its a case of not wanting the public to find out, start building at the alpha site or somewhere else off world. A lot of people generally know about the stargate programme from atlantis/earth. Its definatly possible..

I'll never understand why so many people think that just because we've got the Asgard database that we can build an O'Neill class.
We haven't got the infrastructure, the skills or the materials to do it. The Asgard database is designed to teach us how to build Asgard technology. Before we can do anything we need to understand what we're doing, which could take decades!

Even if we could build an O'Neill, with our limited resources and construction capacity, we'd be better off building a dozen or so 304s. One O'Neill can only be in one place at a time, the amount of 304s we could build with the same amount of resources can be in many places at a time.

well with the asgard "replacator" you could conseavably build an O'Neil class or even posablely Auroa class warship but I think your right 304's are smaller than eather class and one ship can only be in one place at any one time and 304's can handel them selfs against hives and Ha'tacks not to mention Asuran Auroa class warships and since a Ha'tack is a mile long like the LeGrange point satalie weapon in the orignal Atlantian system, the USAF can't seal of an enitre mile of Navada to build a ship at least the length of a Ha'tack with out someone noticing plus the site were the Promeatheus and Deadalus are begin built say sealing a two and a half mile raidus for "classafied projects" that will raise eyebrows around Navada

While I am a big fan of the various bigger alien ships we've come into contact with, I think the fact that 304s are much more maneuverable than those ships can be quite an advantage if it's used (which most of the time it's not), not to mention that we've got the Plasma Beam weapons that can pretty much take out anything we've seen this far.
It would be cool to see some Asgard Naqueda Trinium Carbon alloy used on the outer hull of our ships, plus maybe some upgraded power generation and systems so that our shields get a bit stronger.

I imagine in the future we may build some bigger battle ships that match at least an O'Neill or Aurora in size, but for now we don't really need it.

I did create a thread to discuss if people think we have the know how to build a Human City ship like Atlantis, which I think we do, if anyone wants to take a look here's the link:

The O'Neill is pretty maneuverable. The O'Neill that was in the first battle against the Ori was flying around like a humming bird on crack.

Well it would be pointless to make a huge ship instead of building multiple 304's because then you could spread them out and you wouldn't be putting all your eggs in one basket. Plus it would take longer to make too.

An O'Niell class would be a nice addition to our fleet but we can't build the hull, we can't match the power requirements and we don't have the shipyards to build a vessel that size!

why do we have to build on earth?
Why do we specifically have to build an O'neill. A 305 maybe, a ship purpose built to destroy hive ships.

the 304s may be small compaired to Asgard ships or Wraith Hives but they're more maneuverable in battle. bigger ships such as the Hives are harder to turn if u wanna escape. which is why they kicked the replicators butt in BAMSR'd. besides with the Asgard weapons the ship doesn't need to be big. as long as it has the powerfull Asgard weapons they can kick anyones butt.

As previously said, the o'neill in the first battle with the ori seemed... quite manuverable.

This leads to the question, why is it?

here is an evil thought we have the germ that can "grow" hive ships, we also have dna from the asgard which means you can clone them, so if the computer capacity of a hive ship is directly related to the brain power of the species that was used to grow the hive ship, imagine a hive with the computational power of an asgard brain, all you need to grow a hive ship is raw materials and energy, which can come from anywhere, so imagine a planet with no stargate in milky way, build a nursery for hive ships using cloned asgard with no memories, no "soul" so no ethical concerns, all you need is the just the energy from the sun, granted it wouldn't be as fast as if feed by a zpm, but it would be faster than building 304's, and without fear of the ori the asgard core be used to optimize the virus used to "grow" the hives, it could also be used increase hyperspace engine capacity, weapons, install a shield and so on and so on, you could also use asgard transport technology to replicate sections of 304's to be assembled later, now to just out right produce whole sections would have to be zpm level in magnitude, but if the appropriate raw materials were loaded into the buffer the materials could be rearranged and in doing so there would be little needed in terms of of power, and it would happen fairly quickly so for little effort a herd of 304\wraith\asgard hybrid ships could be built,so the only input out be

                              ->asgard clones
->a suitable, guard able planet (dont want the lucian alliance stealing our new toys)
->an earth ship or at least an outpost with an asgard core and beaming tech also merlin's out of phase tech (build them out of phase to prevent spying)
->finally an earth ship to up take raw materials from points in our galaxy and beam back the completed sections for integration into the ships

but hey its a mute point now with the series ending
