Stargate Atlantis - Penticon Western News: Osoyoos desert invaded by film crew

Osoyoos desert invaded by film crew

    Published: September 09, 2008 6:00 PM

Normally filmed in Vancouver, Stargate Atlantis has made a move to Osoyoos for the filming of one episode.

There’s been an alien invasion in Osoyoos.

Actually, it’s the current production of Stargate Atlantis, which is working this week.

Thanks to its scenic desert and landscape, the South Okanagan is a draw to producers.

According to the Okanagan Film Commission, the location complements co-creator Robert Cooper who wrote the episode, Vegas, that the team is currently filming.

It is suggested that Flanigan, the series’ lead actor, will be appearing in scenes shot in the Okanagan.

Vegas will be aired on local television in the beginning of 2009.

    Nice pics, but ...

    It's Penticton not Penticon. (Pen-tic-ton)

    and Okanagan not Onakagan. (Oka-naw-gan)

    You got Osoyoos right. (O-soy-oos)

    Beautiful country I might add.

    Thanks.

        Productions create economic impact

        September 11, 2008

In the last few decades the South Okanagan has seen an explosion of growth in its agricultural industries and population. But it’s also seen growth in the number of film and television productions interested in using our area as a backdrop to their work.

The Okanagan Film Commission has been integral in creating interest and awareness of the valley since its inception in 1990. Since its start it has helped bring feature films (Fido, the third The Mummy film and TV miniseries The Andromeda Strain), mockumentaries (Search for Ogopogo), television series (X-Weighted, Stargate Atlantis and Hollywood and Vine to name a few) and even music videos and commercials.

More recently, the commission has assisted in the creation of a film production rental facility as well as a film studio right in the middle of the Okanagan.

With advances in the industry, maybe it’s possible for the Okanagan to become a common name when it comes to productions — like Vancouver is known as a home base for series and films like The X-Files and The Fantastic Four.

It’s advantageous to use the Okanagan for films as we have everything from lush vineyards and arid deserts to friendly neighbourhoods and dark, ominous alleys.

Even if the current production of Stargate Atlantis is using the Osoyoos desert only because it “offers the outskirts of Las Vegas look they’re after,” according to film commissioner Jon Summerland, it is still an asset to the area. These productions pump millions of dollars into the economies of Okanagan communities, whether through patronage of hotels, restaurants, rentals or paying extras.

Incidentally, did they change their minds about actually going down to Vegas to film this episode, as mentioned in a fairly recent Gateword article?

This is probably second camera work they're doing Osoyoos.

Please note it's an on-location shot from the episode "Vegas" so spoilerphobes should avoid if they wish to remain totally spoiler free. If not, go to the Joe Flanigan Thunk thread for the main link to many more photos (also posted at the Shep Whump thread) or at the Season 5 photos thread (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=55374) which contains many spoiler photos.
