    Jaffa Question

    Is there a command structure within the jaffa ranks and if so what is it?

    obviously you have First prime, but what would his next in line be called.

    I only ask as I'm doing a fanfic and didn't know what to call the Jaffa who is 2IC to the first prime.

    any suggestions would be welcome if there is no definite answer I'll take any help I can get
    Hammond "Colonel, General Chekov thinks that due to our arrangement with the Russian government a russian soldier be assigned to SG1"

    O'Neill "Over my rotting corpse Sir" *pauses* "Oh did I say that out loud"

    Hammond "I did say that I would discuss it with you and that you would give the matter some careful consideration"

    O'Neill "Yes I'm sure I would, but I would still probably say bite me"

        The way I see it, First Prime is more a title than a rank. I think it's meant to mean that Teal'c was the commander of Apophis's personal guard.

        Please feel free to disagree/argue with me.

        Long before you and I were born, others beat these benches with their empty cups,
        To the night and its stars, to the here and now with who we are.

        Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
        And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.

          I'm not sure if it was stated that Apophis had a special guard. Anubis certainly had one though, probably because he couldn't use a ribbon device.

          I always thought First Prime was deligated some authority by thier God, like a field general.

            I thought First Prime was head of all the god's Jaffa forces; for example, Apophsis, and it was an honor to be chosen one. Within it the First Prime chose an appentence that he train to become one day his successor.

              I think First Prime is a rank.
              And that's arranged like this.

              ROYAL GUARD RANKS:

              Leader = First Prime.
              Rest = Royal Guard.

              NORMAL JAFFA RANKS:

              Leader = Prime.
              Rest = Jaffa.

              The chain of command would be:

              Jaffa - Prime - Royal Guard - First Prime.

                Purely my own system:

                First Prime - supreme commander of all Jaffa forces under a System Lord; precise remit varies according to Goa'uld, from general down to the equivalent of CMS of the Air Force.

                Primarch - ersatz First Prime of a lesser Goa'uld. Same command level but sits further down the table in the mess.

                Command Prime - Jaffa in charge of a force of other Jaffa: could be a legion, battalion, company, patrol or section prime, or others, again depending on the organisational idiosyncracies of the particular Goa'uld. Basically, all senior Jaffa are primes and the top dog is First Prime. Prime assignment may even be transitory, like the old Red Army where you had a role not a rank ('cause you're all equal, right).

                Squad leader - Jaffa in charge of a squad.

                You'd also have specialists; field techs who can do very basic maintenance only, armourers, scouts and heavy weapons troops.
                Behold the majesty that is...GERALD!

                  Both of your, Janus and MP sound about right to me. I have to agree.

                    I'm not sure, but I think the Serpent Guards might have been his personal guard, but I'm not sure. And I don't think a hand device is a factor as the system lord Moloc had his own trusted imperial guard.

                      Thanks to everyone for their replies, especially Janus and mr prophet.

                      Both of those were excellent explanations and have set me on the right track for my fanfic.

                      I'd stopped writing (not that I need much of an excuse!) because of getting hung up on the details of the Jaffa ranks and titles. Now with your ideas the grey matter seems to be working again and I'm going to get back to it. Woohoo

                      Cheers

                        Easy: First Prime
                        Grunt

                        Thats it. (except for those who have Imperial/Serpent/Horous/Jackal Guards as well.

                          I suppose I was trying to point out that most Goa'ulds can excert quite a bit of strength if they have to. We've seen Apophis grab Tealc' by the throat as well as other instnaces.

                          Anubis is, most likely, unable to do this since he lacks a host/body. With out a body, he would be unable to control the basic Goa'uld devices.

                          He would really need some jaffa to look out for him!

                              I have a couple of questions on the Jaffa.

                              1. Is the tattoo on the Jaffa's forehead is put there at Prim'tah or does it come naturally?

                              2. It also concerns the tattoos. (I don't know if I should put a spoiler tag on this question or not.) Ry'ac married another Jaffa who had a Modoc tattoo. Since they a free Jaffa, while their children have a tattoo or not? If so, who?
