I thought Sam said she found a time to go to, but the others weren't going to like it, and it was 1929, and that's where Cam went first. So depending on where Cam arrived in 1929, he did live through the Great Depression time period.

Yes, he did. But it could take only one or two right move on the market to became rich and never worry about the everyday bread anymore. And since Mitchell came from the future from his point of view, he actually had the knowledge to do that.
