but it explains some of garcia. she's colorfully quirky and odd to distance herself from the endless stream of horror and violence that's part of her job
I see many parallels between JJ and Gracia in that they are both perhaps the least qualified (as in have the least academic qualifications for this line of work ie. profiling) and yet they're the one who seem to see the most of it.

JJ because she fields dozens more cases than the team actually sees, and Garcia because I remember more than one occasion when she was forced to rewatch tapes of murders over and over and over again in order to find whatever it was the team was looking for.

So I don't begrudge Garcia her quirkiness for that reason alone. She's a computer and tech specialist. She didn't go to school for this. She wasn't trained to deal with it like the rest of them, so she finds her own way to cope.

JJ the same but to a lesser extent. She's an FBI agent so she's had some necessary training, but she's not a profiler.

Derek Morgan is the name you're looking for. And he's had a few episodes himself. I'm still waiting on some Hotch episodes and some Prentiss episodes.

they haven't overly misbalanced by and large, but i know last season after they had about half a dozen episodes that focused on spencer, i was like 'enough already'.
Definitely. I get that's he's the show's "darling", but I feel like we know him now and everyone else needs some focus too. I mean we've met his mother and his father, he's been addicted to drugs, been forced to kill a suspect, he's investigate his father as a possible child molester and murderer...enough already with Reid.

prentiss, thank you. once i read it, i know it

as to her, did they ever totally settle the 'she's a spy' angle that they had for a bit? that she was put on the team to monitor and 'rat' them out?

something like that would be interesting, or if she's the one suggesting that someone else keep an eye on a group. and hotch, yeah, how's he handling the job costing him his marriage? if his marriage is totally over, find him someone please.

I do like how, usually, the character's lives are the B story, but sometimes i'd like to get a bit more now and then....just not the ER 'abby and luka' soap for 3 of the 20

She was never in on it. Some higher ups put her there expecting that when they asked her to divulge information she would do it because she felt she owed them for putting her on the team. When they time came and they wanted dirt on the BAU, she resigned instead of ratting them out.

This was at the beginning of season 3 when Hotch asked to be reassigned because his wife wanted him more often. Morgan and the others asked for his help on a case and he brought Prentiss back to go with him to help the team. When they arrived back in DC with the case solved, he was reinstated as unit chief of the BAU (after the FBI higher ups told him that he'd never advance as a result), Prentiss got her job back, and Hayley left him for taking the job back.

something like that would be interesting, or if she's the one suggesting that someone else keep an eye on a group. and hotch, yeah, how's he handling the job costing him his marriage? if his marriage is totally over, find him someone please.
His marriage is done. His wife served him with divorce papers in mid season 3 I think.

I'm also a shameless Prentiss/Hotch shipper so I think you can guess who I want TPTB to "find" for him.

I do like how, usually, the character's lives are the B story, but sometimes i'd like to get a bit more now and then....just not the ER 'abby and luka' soap for 3 of the 20
I definitely like the subtle development aspect of this show more than I like the blatant takeover of ER or other shows. TPTB do a really good job of showing how the cases might affect the team without making it melodramatic or taking too much attention away from the case itself.

A good example is a case in Season 3 with two unsub killing families. A teenage girl survives one of those cases and Prentiss gets closer to the girl as she helps them catch the unsubs, to the point where she tells Hotch that she'd be interested in adopting the girl if she doesn't have family to take her in.

It's a quietly done part of the episode - showing how Prentiss and JJ are both affected by this young girl and how Prentiss is thinking of maybe having a family one day. It's also a testament to the actors as well that they don't overdo it for the sake of demonstrating their own skills.

I am just going to ramble here since I haven't had a chance to see every single episode. In fact I have yet to see the one where Mandy leaves the show and would love it if CBS.com would stream this show like it does others

I have to say that I can't really find fault with any of the characters overall. I really enjoy the banter between Garcia and Derek, so much so that I really look forward to it when ever he picks up the phone to call into to her I enjoy Prentiss and Hotch...not sure if I would go so far as to say I would ever *ship* hem or anyone on this show for that matter....

I really like Reid and totally enjoy when he is part of the team solving things, I can't say I was too enthralled by the drug storyline so I am glad they moved passed that fairly fast.

I was really happy they went with the JJ story with the police guy it was sweet letting her have a life

I like the guy who replaced Mandy and I like all the byplay with all the characters.

I think the writers do a fantastic job making this show psychologically twisting and making the viewer think most of the time. There have been times when it gets a bit convoluted to me and I think they jump to the end of the show or the suspect to easily but its TV *shrug*

I like the whole premises of the show is cool though as I like figuring out the reasons behind why people do what they do.

It doesn't? That's weird. I'm in Canada so I wouldn't see it anyway, but it's one of their highest performing shows. It would make sense for them to stream it. Oddness.

Yep. I just love hearing what she's going to say next.

Someone needs a happy ending if only to prove that it's actually possible. That said, I may hurt someone if they do anything to break up her family.

That's the part I really find fascinating too; the thought processes behind peoples' behaviours. You think that you're just performing a random action or doing something for no reason, but in actuality there's always a "cause and effect" between what you've experienced or seen and what you do or say in the future.

Kind of makes you take a step back and rethink yourself. Creepy indeed.

Speaking of interesting episodes (I think we were at one point) there was an episode in the back half of season 3 featuring a serial killer who'd just woken up from a coma unable to remember anything about himself or what he'd done. The dilemma for the BAU was whether or not to make him remember so that he'd be fit to stand trial for his crimes and whether not remembering made him "safer" or "fixed" him.

In essence, was he still a serial killer if he remembered none of the events that shaped his life?

That was an interesting one and a rather interesting question.

Because how could folks deal with it if he was not tried and then did remember on his own and instead of being repulsed was intrigued and began again. Could they take that chance?

                  Here's my take...

He needed to be tried regardless of whether or not he remembered what he'd done because he had in fact committed those acts. There was evidence of this. Not remembering what he'd done doesn't negate the fact that he had done it. At least not in my mind.

Now what kind of sentencing they'd give him is another matter entirely, I think. The main problem being the one you pointed out. Will he remember? And if he does, will he want to do it again?

It's an almost impossible moral dilemma to examine and resolve because there are so many things to take into account. What defines a person? What makes a person? Are we the sum of our experiences or are we born a certain way and "create" our experiences?

If there are cases of people having experienced psychotic breaks, unable to remember their actions, and being institutionalised for it, what makes his situation very different from those? Should he be institutionalised in that case?

In any case, do I think he should ever be released? Sigh..... No. I don't think he should be. Not after what he'd done. There are just too many unanswerable questions.

I think it is episodes such as that that cause you to really think about what your core belief system is and how does it hold up in the face of this....or that.... that make for some really good dramtic TV.

I can't say I would want every week to be this intense however. Nor will I ever see myself debating things that are my core beliefs in a place such as this, a Forum Message board. But I like that something as inane as TV can and should have the ability to make us stop and THINK for a moment and really face ourselves. I like that it can spur discussion within the home and make families discuss things, husbands and wives discuss and debate how this affects their thinking and serves as a means for folks to really delve into some conversation that will add depth into their relationships

I love Criminal Minds, Hotch especially. My favorite ship is Hotch/Prentiss, but I do have a serious soft spot for Rossi/Reid. I'm terribly glad that in interviews/chats Andrew Wilder and Ed Bernero have said that there will never be canon shipping between the team just because it precludes the wankage/fanwar that happened with McKeller in SGA and Grissom/Sara in CSI. I do not want my ship to be the reason people are crying "jumped the shark," thank you, I'm perfectly happy with subtext.

After Hotch my second-favorite is Garcia. Garcia is awesome: she really brings the "everyman" element to the show, like Broots did in The Pretender, while still being highly competent.

I'd like Hotch and Prentiss (what's her first name) to get together.

Is Rossi the guy that replaced Mandy Patinkin? I don't wont a rossi / Reid ship . Goodness give the kid a girlfriend. I thought he had found one when they had that episode about the guy killing while attending a "how to pick up girls" course. At the end of the show she sends him his card with a kiss on it.

                          Just Watched S04E01

Very Good Episode, had me completely gripped, apart from the middle 10 min when the person I was watching it with shouted out her thoughts on the episode and it broke my concentration.

                          Great Episode 10/10
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint... it happens to kinda look like the name 'Jeremy Bearimy' in cursive English.

Anyone here still watch Criminal Minds?

I actually don't, but I'm curious what people's reaction might be to the casting news for next season.

                            Spoiler:
As a non-viewer, it seems a little weird to me that a show would focus on the female characters when cutting costs, but I'm wondering what a fan viewpoint might be.

They should keep Paget Brewster as she's cool and tough and one of my favourites.... They can ditch AJ Cook she is about as useful as wet sandpaper and you hardly see her on the show ..... As for Kirsten the Abby try hard I can't stand her....... She's annoying...... Ditch her tooo.

Well this sucks. I still watch the show and enjoy most of the episodes. I like the whole ensemble,

This sounds very sexist, cutting the two female agents, whilst leaving the boys alone.

Here in the UK we've just seen the episode introducing the 'new' team, which will be used in a spin-off. I, personally, thought the episode was very weak, and the new team was awful. Perhaps if CBS ditched this spin-off, they could afford to keep the females of the original team.
