    Uniform Authenticity

So I was just wondering if those uniforms worn by the SG teams and SG-1 in particular when they are out in the field are the actual ones worn by USAF servicemen?

Of all the photos and manuals I've looked at I couldn't find a single reference to those combat jackets SG-1 usually wear on missions. As far as I know all combat personnel either wear the BDU (Battle Dress Uniform) or the eventual replacement the ABU (Airmen Battle Uniform), or on rare occasions the overalls, but not those olive green or black jackets.

    Can anyone confirm that?

This is what SG-1 wear in the show:

If the bad guys don't need camo, then neither do the good guys.

SG-1's uniforms look cooler then the real ones. Also, It is probably just artistic license.

Some of the other teams wear *authentic* looking uniforms.
However, I have never seen Sg1 actually wear real USAF uniforms, not even anything remotely resembling a real USAF uniform.

The desert-camo that SG-1 wears in "The Other Guys" look similar to the real uniforms in the pictures above.

according to Seahen, the SJ Ship Thread's AF specialist , the BDUs worn on SG1 are quite accurate, as are the DCUs and service dress uniforms. The blue and green uniforms don't exist in the USAF...but they do look quite a bit like some of the RAAF uniforms I have seen...

I know the BDU's are accurate, though as you said, not necessarily the colors since the uniforms usually have varying degrees of camo-patterns, which I guess wouldn't look as nice on TV so TPTB opted for green or blue for the whole costume instead.

Anyway I was actually referring to the uniforms SG-1 wear on off-world missions, specifically the jackets - those are neither BDU nor ABU. From what little I know they shouldn't be wearing any flight jackets for combat to being with! I wonder what's wrong with the blouses? They wear them in the SGC, so why not off-world?

My knowledge of USAF dress protocol is not as good as RAF protocol, so I can't comment entirely, but regarding why they don't wear the uniform that they wear in the SGC offworld - simple. There are many different types of uniform, and the SGC worn uniform is what we in Britain would refer to as "barrack dress". It's a semi smart uniform (well, would be our case, I never cared for the way US always left their shirts untucked), with little operational use.

As for accurate USAF uniform, I have never seen any real USAF's wearing the uniform SG1 tends to, particularly the black, though my experience with America's military is limited. The uniforms worn by other teams, and on occasion by SG1 (I think in the episode with the Re-Tu) is particularly accurate. Traditionally the only people to wear black uniforms would be Special Forces, but they're usually a black overall as opposed to a black shirt and trousers combo.

If you ask me, they went with that uniform because that's what they wore in the films.

Whoever dresses the actors in SG1 are not always on the ball. I saw a dress blue uniform on one actor which had Staff Sergeant stripes on the sleeves and Major insignia on the epaulets. I just winced at that.

To be honest, I like the black jacket things Cam made the team wear S9 forward a whole lot better than the other uniforms They're just a bit more fashionable and flat out look cool. If I wanted a uniform, I'd go with them!

They're also the least practical uniforms in the world.

Black is one of the most visible colours. You learn early on in escape and evasion training that you should avoid any black garments other than boots at all cost as it shows up more than camo does at night and during the day its far more obvious as well. The only situations when black should be used is when you don't have to worry about camo in combat, so generally indoors frankly, and then it's usually part of an SF suit, which includes a respirator and such...

Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't Col. Reynolds and the marine teams sport camo garb whenever we see them? Specifically, I seem to recall Reynolds wearing pixel camo every time we see him.

So a question occurs; why do some teams wear camo patterns, while SG-1 doesn't? The answer: Because they're just that badass. Obviously.
Jayne - Ain't logical. Cuttin' on his own face, rapin' and murdering - Hell, I'll kill a man in a fair fight... or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or if I'm gettin' paid - mostly only when I'm gettin' paid. But these Reavers... last ten years they show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eating people alive? Where's that get fun?
Kaylee - Shepherd Book said they was men who just reached the edge of space, saw a vasty nothingness, and went bibbledy over it.
Jayne - Oh, hell, i've been to the edge. Just looked like... more space.
