    Stargate: Atlantis - Volume 19 (Season 4 - Vol 4)

    Available 14 July 2008 [UK]

    **snippage**

Quarantine is an interesting episode as it takes different members of the Atlantis team and traps them together in various rooms through out the city. So, we have McKay and Katie Brown; Sheppard and Teyla; Ronon and Keller; and Carter and Zelenka having to work together in teams of two in order to try and work out how to get the city back to normal. There are also a few interesting revelations about some of the crew relationships.

(The review author rated this episode with an 8.)

Harmony is one of the funniest episodes so far this season and sees McKay and Sheppard having to escort a bratty little girl on, what should have been, a dull walk in the forest. However, it soon becomes clear that this is anything but a simple task, as a patrol of Genii are on the planet and want Harmony dead. And, if that wasn't enough, there also appears to be a flesh eating beast loose in the forest.

Outcast is an entertaining enough episode, it's just that it is nowhere near as good as the other episodes on this disc, which makes it stand out quite a bit. The biggest problem, for me, was that I worked out the supposed major twist way before it was revealed. There's also way too much "borrowing" of ideas from Terminator 2 - from the replicator's style of running and the bullet hit effects.

    **snippage**

(The review author rated this episode with a 7.)

Trio is one of those episodes that, from the synopsis, sounds like the dullest idea for a 40 min episode. Thankfully though it's not - in fact it's one of the show's best episodes to date. There's so much jeopardy, and plans that just don't quite work, that you'll be on the edge of your seat for the whole duration.

    **snippage**

(The review author rated this episode with a 10.)

Extras include the aforementioned audio commentaries; Mission Directive: Quarantine with Martin Wood (10 min, 22 sec behind the scenes look at the episode Quarantine) Mission Directive: Outcast with Andy Mikita (10 min, 17 sec look at the making of Outcast); The Making Of Trio (16 min, 33 sec); and photo and production design galleries.

I'm up through Trio on the DVDs - and have listened to all of the commentaries (a first for either SG-1 or SGA for me) so far - and watched the featurettes.

I'm enjoying seeing the shows again and at DVD quality. (I had watched S4 via iTunes on my TV.) The battle scenes are that much more spectacular, and I can see small details lost in the lower resolution downloaded videos.

Even the one ep I still can't get into (Trio) was worth watching with the commentary track.

The one mini-bummer is there is no commentary for
      Spoiler:
      Midway.
As one of my faves from S4, I was looking forward to the commentary for that ep.

Oh well, the S4 boxset is still chock full of Gately goodness.

I think the menus are good this year, and the CG/graphics for the "Mission Directives" are the best I've seen over the past four seasons. They have a cleaner, less obtrusive style, but are still sci-fi-esque in their design.

      Thanks for the reviews, Morjana!

Midway sees Teal'c arrive on Atlantis in a bid to prepare Ronon for his IOA interview. However, Ronon seems to have anger issues which threaten to have him kicked of the Atlantis team. As the two head to earth, via Midway station, they are caught up in a Wraith attack.

        **snippage**

This is the only episode of season four to not feature an audio commentary.

(The review author rated this episode with a 7.)

        The Kindred ...(snippage)

Joseph Mallozzi (executive producer / writer) and Peter F. Woeste (director) provide this episode's audio commentary. Highlights include the fact that fan's are always asking where are the Ancient bathroom facilities on the station - a point that will be tackled in season five when we will see McKay in an Ancient bath. Apparently you need the Ancient gene to flush the toilets on the station; the pair asking why Sheppard is always wearing armbands; some amusing stories about what Christopher Judge is scared of; and what is really written on the plexiglas on the Daedalus.

(The review author rated this episode with a 8.)

The Kindred - Part 2 doesn't conclude the Teyla story line - leaving it hanging in the wind to be concluded in the next season. The reasons for this are pretty obvious as the actress, Rachel Luttrell, had left the show at this point to have a baby. However, it does wrap up quite a few loose plot points.

This episode also has one of the most moving conclusion I've seen on an Atlantis episode.

        **snippage**

(The review author rated this episode with a 9.)

The Last Man is a Sheppard and McKay episode. It sees Sheppard trapped in the future with no way of getting back to the Atlantis he left. His only hope is that a holographic McKay can help him. But, as the hologram was only programmed with a finite number of scenarios that would help Sheppard, the fact that he McKay hadn't counted for the fact that most of Atlantis would have been consumed by sand is not promising.

        **snippage**

(The review author rated this episode with a 6.)

Extras include the above mentioned audio commentaries (only three on this disc for some reason instead of the usual four); A Look Back on Season 4 (11 min, 56 sec look back over this season); Deleted Scenes (24 min, 24 sec featurette that features some of the cut scenes from this season with explanations from the crew on why each scene was lost from the final edit); and Photo and Design galleries.

Stargate Atlantis series 4 volume 4 review

One of the best episodes of Stargate Atlantis can be found on this disc. And one of the worst...

            Carl England

Featuring four episode for your money, this latest volume of the fourth season DVD collection of Stargate Atlantis kicks off with ‘Quarantine’, in which, you guessed it, Atlantis goes under Quarantine. Of course, like many things on Atlantis, something is wrong. It wasn’t intentional, and as far as we know, there isn’t even a virus! No, this isn’t something that the Atlantis team can fight; it’s an episode of dealing.

Everyone is stuck with the person they would least want to be stuck with. At least, that’s what they think at first. This episode is not only one of the best of the season, but also probably one of the best of Atlantis since it began four years ago. Not only does it keeps tensions high, but it also allows characters to get to bond and hash out arguments or fears. High credit goes to everyone involved in this episode!

            *8snippage**

The extras are a lot more generous than some Atlantis disks I’ve seen as they have three featurettes on different episodes that give a whole lot more insight into the production of certain elements of the show. Especially where they talk about 'Trio', telling of how they thought it would save money because it’s a small, contained episode. Not so, in fact it was the most expensive episode of the entire season! It’s a brilliant feature for a brilliant episode; who would have thought it? Of course, the rest of the disc is packed with Commentaries from writers and directors, and a nice photo gallery. What’s that you say? Actors on commentaries! Yes, that’s right, one of the most annoying things about the last disk is corrected here, as Amanda Tapping, David Hewlett and Jewel Staite all turn up to commentaries. Excellent.

Sadly, this DVD is like having a sandwich with absolutely incredible bread, but the filling in the middle is just a little past its prime. It’s edible, but not incredible, and the best thing you’ll remember it for is the bready goodness. Where am I going with this? Nowhere, I’m just really hungry. Good disc, though.

Notable Stargate Atlantis Season Four Episode

Look for a few praiseworthy episodes in this DVD set, namely the season opener 'Adrift' which maintains a suspense level matching most Hollywood actioners; 'Quarantine', which finds the many team members isolated all over the base, allowing for much needed character development; 'Trio' is another great example of quality writing over mindless explosion and space dogfights; also look for 'Midway' where the aforementioned Teal'c meets with Ronon Dex, helping him prepare to deal with his review by the International Oversight Advisory committee (think of a watchdog group overseeing Atlantis' dealings, and its members).

As with many other shows finding footing after shaky first seasons, Stargate Atlantis is now well on its way, and promises to offer even more impressive storylines in upcoming Season Five, with sci-fi staple and SG-1 veteran Robert Picardo (aka The Doctor, on Star Trek Voyager), returning as bureaucrat Richard Woolsey, next leading the team.

Overall, this season comes highly recommended; though the box set itself has many small informative featurettes helping further decipher the Stargate universe, they pale in comparison to the actual episodes themselves, which outshine any other bonuses offered this time around.
8 out of 10, for improving on previous seasons.

More Cool and Whimsical Sci-Fi with ‘Stargate Atlantis’: Season 4

Posted by Kevin Carr on July 22, 2008

                **snippage**

Season 4 of Stargate Atlantis picks up with the ancient city under siege by the Replicators. Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson) is injured, and the team is forced to fly the city off into space. The loss of Dr. Beckett (Paul McGillion) in the previous season was a sign of things to come as we see more cast changes. While Weir is still around for part of the season, her command is compromised, and the I.O.A. sends Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping, originally from SG-1) to be the new mission leader.

Other changes in this season is the introduction of a new doctor, played by Jewel Staite from Firefly fame. We also see a much stronger arc with Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), which incorporates her real-life pregnancy into a chilling storyline. We also see the return of some familiar faces that have become favorite antagonists – Todd the semi-good Wraith and Michael the hybrid.

The only real complaint I have in Season 4 is the choice to bring Samantha Carter on as the mission leader. I always liked her in SG-1, but because she’s been there and done that with practically everything in the Stargate universe, there was really no room for her to grow. Her character was stagnant, and she was unfazed by anything that happened. Even the rocky sexual tension with Rodney McKay is lost with her as his superior.

Stargate Atlantis: The Complete Fourth Season

McKay: Even if I do get it working, there's still a thousand things that could go terribly, terribly wrong.

Sheppard: I get it. It's difficult, million to one odds, blah, blah, blah.

McKay: Was there something else you needed, or were you here merely to prod and belittle?

                  Sheppard: No, no. Not merely.

                  - Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett

                  **snippage**

During each successive year, Stargate Atlantis has continued to carve its niche away from its predecessor and build its own mythology. The entire main cast is likable, particularly Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett, who consistently steal the show from their able counterparts. I've even grown fond of Jason Momoa's Ronon Dex, who seemed a bit too wooden at first. Weaving in recurring characters like David Nykl's sharp Zelenka and Robert Piccardo's controlling bureaucrat Woolsey, the creative team continues to build the excitement. They've definitely managed to escape the shadow of Stargate SG-1 and should continue to thrive in the upcoming years.

                    **snippage**

It's a tale of two discs as Season 4 shudders then crashes to a halt. The stalled engines are thanks to the four episodes in Volume 4 of the spin-off series, which is the much weaker of the two discs covered here. Bringing together Quarantine, Harmony, Outcast and Trio, it consists of not one but two episodes of trapped team members; a Rodney-hates-kids comedy tale and an Earth-based story unnecessarily continued from a previous adventure.

Compare that to the opening slice of action that kicks off Volume 5. Midway sees Teal’c (Christopher Judge) pay Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa) a visit and ends with this army of two taking on a full-scale Wraith assault. Meanwhile, The Kindred double-parter offers a long-awaited return for a popular character killed off in Season 3. That's all thanks to Star Trek: Enterprise's Connor Trinneer, who also makes a reappearance as half-Wraith/half-human bad guy Michael. A constant thorn in Atlantis's side, Michael seems intent on taking control of the entire galaxy, using kidnap, murder and even planet-wide genocide along the way.

                    **snippage**

                    VERDICT

                    Volume 4: 4/10

                    Volume 5: 8/10

One of the weakest offerings for those collecting the set disc-by-disc is trounced by much stronger, action-based episodes that end the series with a bang.

Stargate Atlantis: The Complete Fourth Season DVD

Amanda Tapping and Jewel Staite jump to Atlantis for a season of flux—and a growing Replicator threat

                      By Melissa Perenson

The cast and producers of Stargate Atlantis noted that season four represented a reset of sorts. Understandably so: By episode two, Dr. Elizabeth Weir had died in the line of duty; a new yet familiar commander, Col. Samantha Carter (Tapping), took charge; a new doctor, Dr. Keller (Jewel Staite), signed on; and other characters were in a state of flux after recent upheavals.

The dual focal points of the season were the introduction of Carter into the command structure and the challenges faced by Atlantis as it faced the growing Replicator threat. Bringing Carter aboard from SG-1 was an organic and natural maneuver given the nature of Atlantis and the challenges the expedition faced in its fourth season.

But sadly, Carter's new role was not maximized in the best ways possible, and Tapping never quite settled into the role. And few of this season's episodes jump out of the pack. While some episodes, like "Trio," were ambitious, others felt more like rehashes, doing less to advance the Atlantis narrative than one might expect, given how much was going on this season (Teyla's pregnancy, the ongoing Wraith threat, the battle against the Replicators).

One episode that does stand out: "Midway," in which Teal'c makes a visit to Atlantis to help Ronan sort through some issues—and gets swept up in a Wraith attack on the station. The series ends the season on a strong note with the two-parter "The Kindred" and the finale, "The Last Man Standing"—but those episodes can't balance out the unevenness that preceded them.

                      **snippage**

I always enjoy the meaty, informative commentaries on Stargate sets. Given the addition of Tapping's Carter, I had high hopes for Atlantis this season, but the season fell a bit short of what I'd hoped for. —Melissa
