    Seven U.S. television series shot in Vancouver renewed for next season
    By Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun

    Published: Thursday, March 06, 2008

    VANCOUVER - With seven American dramatic series recently renewed for new seasons, B.C.'s television industry has started to rebound from the disastrous Writers Guild of America strike that silenced the industry over the winter.

    This week, The CW network renewed big series Smallville for an eighth season and Supernatural for a fourth. They join ABC's Men in Trees (season two), ABC Family's Kyle XY (season three), SciFi Channel's Stargate Atlantis (fifth season) and Eureka (third season) and USA Network's Psych (third season) in the renewal column.

    Decisions are yet to be made on American series The L Word (Showtime), Reaper (the CW) and the sitcom Aliens in America (the CW). Canadian series still up in the air include Intelligence, The Guard, Flash Gordon, Interns and Whistler.

    **snippage**

    Foreign television series account for more than one-third of the film and television industry's annual revenues.

    One area damaged by the WGA strike was the making of TV pilots for potential future series. The shortened pilot season coupled with dwindling viewers for network series means big networks like CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox are spending less on series pilots.

    And fewer pilots will mean fewer series.

    In the new Stargate Atlantis Superfan Contest Video, Martin Gero says:

    "This year, we're going to do an all new set of promos, to celebrate the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis, which starts here in July 2008."

    As production has already started in February, hopefully Martin is referring to the air date of SGA season five on the SciFi Channel.

      The good news: we're airing early this year, starting in the summer. So hopefully our ratings will stay up, and most importantly, you won't have long to wait for more Stargate.

        A lot of articles/mentions are already being posted at the Season 5 discussion area

        that way you can avoid spoilers as people are logically putting the spoilers under each episode title.

            Stargate Atlantis may be coming back earlier than expected

            Posted Mar 10th 2008 10:04AM by Richard Keller

            Atlantis may be coming back sooner than you think.A few weeks ago we reported that a fifth season of Stargate Atlantis would be airing on the SciFi network sometime in the fall, just as the fourth season did back in 2007. Well, it now seems like the premiere of the new season will be moving up a couple of months.

            A number of online resources, including Gateworld, TV Guide, and the personal blog of Atlantis executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, are reporting that the show will be premiering in July. "The decision on the Season Five premiere date rests with SCI FI," Mallozzi writes in his blog, "However, I'm hopeful that fans won't have to wait until the fall to see the resolution of our Season Four cliffhanger."

            **snippage**

            Let me know what you think in the poll and the comments below.

            TV SQUAD POLL

            Do you think season five of Stargate Atlantis should premiere in July?

            * Yes

            * No, wait until September.

            * Don't care either way.

              On the other side of the galaxy, People's Choice Winner Stargate Atlantis has been renewed for a 20-episode fifth season. However, cast changes will be made, when Robert Picardo joins the series full-time as the new head of Atlantis, Richard Woolsey. Also coming as a regular is Jewel Staite as Dr. Jennifer Keller, and fan favorites Paul McGillion and Michael Shanks will be coming to Atlantis once again in their roles of Carson Beckett and Daniel Jackson.

              Due to her interactive webseries Sanctuary being picked up as a full-length series, both Amanda Tapping and Col. Carter will be on recurring status. Sanctuary has been greenlit by the SCIFI Channel for a 13-episode commitment.

              Stargate Atlantis will return with brand-new episodes this fall Friday nights at 10pm on the SCIFI Channel.

                  Finding remnants of TV and film productions about town is nothing new, and odds are you or someone you know has a tale to tell about Stargate. The long running, popular sci-fi drama has been shooting here for more than a decade -- starting with Stargate SG-1 and continuing with Stargate Atlantis -- and one of the show's stars, West Vancouver resident Amanda Tapping, says that's a good thing.

                  Currently shooting season 5 of Stargate Atlantis at The Bridge Studios in Burnaby, Tapping finds a short window of time between scenes to talk about the longevity of the show. She attributes its success to a gifted group of writers, who "wove this amazing mythology," and who have managed to keep the storylines fresh over the years.

                  **snippage**

                  Stargate SG-1 became the longest running American Sci-Fi series on TV, and it was the only series ever to receive the United States Air Force seal of approval. Tapping played Major Samantha Carter on SG-1 for 10 years alongside MacGyver alumnus Richard Dean Anderson, and a group of regulars who made up the military team exploring a network of Stargates that lead to other worlds.

                  Tapping then reprised her role for a full season of Atlantis, and is returning for a few of episodes in Season 5. She also appears in the straight-to-DVD feature Stargate: The Ark of Truth, being released Tuesday, March 11. The DVD (along with a second feature to be released in the summer) wraps up a major storyline (the Ori arc) from seasons nine and 10 of SG-1. The resolution of the storyline will allow for future stand-alone movies that don't have to keep reaching back into the mythology of the show, explains Tapping.

                  **snippage**

                  After three sci-fi series, Tapping is looking forward to possibly more Stargate features, and says she is also itching to do a period piece.

                  "I'd love to do a period drama. Starting out on stage and doing a lot of classic theatre, I'd love to get back to that."

                    Excerpts from SciFi Magazine April 08' Issue:

                    From page 19:

                    While there's been no decision on when season five will air, Mallozzi and the Stargate team are hard at work on the season. With the destruction of most of the Replicators and a weakened Wraith, new technologically advanced races that were in hiding will appear. "These races of societies are going to step to the forefront and make their presences felt in the Pegasus Galaxy."

                    From a David Hewlett interview, pages 52 through 54:

                    With the Wraith weakened, societies that once hid themselves along the
                    line of the Genii will begin to emerge next season. "Whether they'll be friends, foes, or a little of both remains to be seen. That's sort of a general goal that we're working towards for the show's fifth season," he says. The series is set to begin production on the new season in February..."

                      April 3 2008-04-03 excerpt on NBC lineup

                      This actually brings up another point. With the move of Life to Friday nights the network is almost programming against itself...well, against its cable siblings at least. We're talking about the shows that air Friday nights on sister networks USA and Sci Fi; programming that actually brings in some very decent numbers. During the fall Life could be up against Psych on USA and Stargate Atlantis on Sci Fi. Come the winter it could be Psych and Battlestar Galactica that vie for the ratings numbers. And, with this being the last season for BSG, there's a pretty good chance that more people will be turning into that science fiction program then they do for a real-life action series.

                          SGA is starting in July so this really won't have an effect. SGA should hopefully have little if any competition. Season 5 needs to start off strong, where S4 left off inorder to get that 6th season pickup.

                            I think they'll have competition from PSYCH and MONK, which do historically well. The networks will probably be drowning in inane reality shows ...
