    Iris

    One thing I can't understand:
    Spoiler:
The wraith dial earth, they receive the connection, receive the IDC, MANUAL open the iris, ball drops through and everyone is out like a light. Then I heard the gate shut! They redial, and just get through! What's with the iris?

    Help! Anyone?

The iris didn't go back up cuz there was no one to activate the iris since they were all stunned. The iris has to be activated by someone in order to close.

Apparently the iris is both opened and closed manually (with the hand pad installed all the way back in SG-1 Season Two). The Wraith were risking that Walter wouldn't have time to realize they were under attack and close the iris after the device rolled through.

So the iris was left open from the previous dial, with no one awake to shut it.

Under normal operating procedures, the iris would be manually closed upon an unscheduled offworld activation (seen in many episodes of SG-1). It is not computer-controlled, and usually doesn't stay closed when the gate is not in use.

Walter should have closed it once the device came through. This would have stopped the rest of the Wraith. Unfortunately, it also would have killed Teal'c and Ronon.

You would think the amount of times we've had enemies circumvent the iris, nearly destroy the iris, and attack the gate in general that they would have come up with a more automated system with a manual override. You also would have thought they would have tied the emergency lockdown procedure with an automatic closing of the iris after the Wraith stun bomb hit the base.

An automated system has its own problems - Giving a computer access to the Iris gives an enemy the chance to hack into the computer and take control of the Iris. Doing it manually is more secure in some respects, but neither way is perfect.

They should take a page from nuclear reactor design. When power fails, the control rods are automatically dropped into the reactor to stop the reaction. They do this by holding the control rods up with electromagnets, so that when the power is cut, the rods drop via gravity.

The iris should be the same way. When there's loss of power, it should be closed automatically by using some sort of mechanical potential energy device. If the system goes into lockdown, the power is cut to the iris. The only way to open it again is to physically operate the device by hand or to restore power. Basically, a fail-safe design (i.e. one that fails safely).

The computer's ability to control the iris was basically revoked in "Show and Tell," after an invisible Re'tu was able to open the iris using an access point (basically, a keyboard).

Especially when you consider the number of times the S.G.C. computer has been compromised (e.g. "Entity"), it's been deemed too great a security risk. Better to make the iris rely upon human judgment and a palm scan.

My only problem with the iris is that Teal'c didn't close it once they got through to the SGC. The wraith weren't able to send another wave, but if they did, Teal'c and Ronon would have been in the same situation as they had on Midway with wraith coming in by the dozen through the gate. If they closed the iris, no more wraith come in and they can't gate else where either since they don't have recognized palm prints.

                  Perfecto!
