    atlantis staying in space

Ok, if landing on a planet, getting attacked, then flying away takes too much time and energy. Why doesn't atlantis stay in space. the shield does not have to be on high power, and if they had more ZPMs it would be easier. But if atlantis was ever attacked, it could just fly away.

well, it would indeed cost VERY VERY much power
    the stargate doesnt work
the shield strenght isnt adjustable btw

Right, its not. Bot nothing would be shooting it to drain power

so, having it online costs power as well

if they stay in 1 spot, the stargate can work, for example those stargates in orbit
Well i was bored and decided to make a borg vs stargate sig, so enjoy...btw the explosions and ships look weird i know, its hard to make them blend

            I am so confused again.

In another post, I didn't understand how 1 partially used ZPM could hold back in ocean for 3.3 thousand years, but 1 fully loaded ZPM couldn't hold up against a Wraith attack for a couple of days.

People explained it by saying shield strength IS adjustable.

Am I not picking up what they are putting down?

well it is easy, wraith attacks are designed to crush shields
              water isnt

                No, it doesn't.

So if shield power cannot be varied, how come we frequently hear of the shields [various ships] power being boosted? - Isn't that a variance of the original power requirements?

Uh... yes it does. Turning anything on costs power.

If I turn on my laptop, it's gonna drain power, regardless of whether or not I use it.

Theoretically A shield that held back 100 atmospheres of water pressure for 10,000 years (3,334 years per ZPM) should be able to hold in 1 atmosphere of pressure for 300,000+ years with one ZPM but there are other power costs from being in space. Inertial dampers, artificial gravity, heat, air filtering, etc. I doubt they add up to much though. If you're just orbiting a planet I'd think a ZPM could last 100,000+ years. That is until McKay gets around it. Then we're talking a week at best.

                          unless maintaining the shield against:

                          1. internal presure
                          2. external radiation
                          3. micrometioroid bombardment
                          4. other stuff

takes so much power it's easier to land.

Mckay said in rising three that if noone was shooting at it it would last indefinatly. I doubt the airpressure from inside would count as a big drain.

They were also on land at the time, meaning the shield only had to filter the air, not were in space it has to hold back the vacuum of space, hold internal pressure, protect against object in space (meteors and micro-meteors) as well as other stuff, like radiation from stars and such.

                              Spoiler:

Woolsey: That sounded like another explosion.
                              O’neill: Yes. Yes, it did.
                              Woolsey: What does that mean?
                              O’neill: Something exploded.
