Ok, if landing on a planet, getting attacked, then flying away takes too much time and energy. Why doesn't atlantis stay in space. the shield does not have to be on high power, and if they had more ZPMs it would be easier. But if atlantis was ever attacked, it could just fly away.

In another post, I didn't understand how 1 partially used ZPM could hold back in ocean for 3.3 thousand years, but 1 fully loaded ZPM couldn't hold up against a Wraith attack for a couple of days.
People explained it by saying shield strength IS adjustable.
Am I not picking up what they are putting down?Enter the Fargate...to steal intergalatic cable!

Theoretically A shield that held back 100 atmospheres of water pressure for 10,000 years (3,334 years per ZPM) should be able to hold in 1 atmosphere of pressure for 300,000+ years with one ZPM but there are other power costs from being in space. Inertial dampers, artificial gravity, heat, air filtering, etc. I doubt they add up to much though. If you're just orbiting a planet I'd think a ZPM could last 100,000+ years. That is until McKay gets around it. Then we're talking a week at best.

Spoiler:
Woolsey: That sounded like another explosion.
O’neill: Yes. Yes, it did.
Woolsey: What does that mean?
O’neill: Something exploded.
