do you think that threads should not be deleted or merged? Won't threads that lack interest simply disappear into the higher numbered pages - never to be seen or heard from again, mourned only by the thread starter?
Also what do you think about 'personal' threads? are they needless clutter or comfortable chatting companions?
isn't merging or deleting of threads like putting a political protester so far away from the place where the person or organization he is trying to protest is out of sight and out of mind? or putting a quiet speaker in a room full of loud people who will drown what he says. A thread in its own right can more effectively spread a message than a post can sometimes you know.
