    It looks as if he was a human and was turned into a wraith( would explain the almost completely bald head).

                  The wraith could be based on eariler designs of the species. These were taken from Preview to Stargate Atlantis:

                  Quite interesting is that in the last pic it says that the slits are used for locating prey and moving in the near dark I think. Through I don't know if they kept those reasons.
