Thanks for the info, but we already have several ratings threads which deal with this. You might want to repost it there.

Thank you, but GateWorld is actually THE information source. Darren and David and staff do an excellent, wonderful, marvelous job.

I just like to contribute as time permits.

I find it interesting that Atlantis is outperforming SG-1 in those ratings. I would have tought a well established series would usually do better then it's spin off. Anyone care to theorize about this?

Some viewers new to the Stargate universe may think they need to catch up on previous seasons of SG-1 in order to follow season 8, so they decide not to watch it at all, fearing confusion otherwise. With Atlantis, they feel they're starting right at the beginning, since, not having watched SG-1 before, they don't realize the extensive backstory that led to the new series.

Atlantis got a tremendous boost out of the box with all the publicity. It's good news, I think, that they held onto 75%+ of their audience from the premiere for this second episode. Stargate had great ratings for its premiere (with not much advertising) and held onto 80%+ of the audience who watched New Order.

I agree with Buzz Lightyear that I've seen many people who are watching Atlantis comment (on various forums) that they just didn't want to try and catch up on so many years of SG-1 but they were happy to try and get in on Atlantis on the ground floor. Now I've even seen some people say that they really like Atlantis and are curious about some of the backstory on the Ancients and the gate system, etc. so they're thinking about trying to watch some old episodes of SG-1 after all.

As for whether a spin-off usually gets a larger or small audience, I'm not sure. It seems like I remember DS-9 and Voyager both got big ratings numbers at first and then tailed off well below ST:TNG's average, but I'm really not sure about that.

Continued great ratings for Atlantis? WOO HOO!!

I just hope this doesn't give SciFi any ideas about ditching SG-1 (in the case that RDA does come back for a ninth season). Look what happened to Farscape once it got dethroned... What are those executives thinking anyway, "We only need one successful series!"...?

I´ve long since given up trying to understand network decisions. They follow no logical path, whatsoever. Although my disappointment (and, ok - yeah a little resentment, as well) is mostly directed at other networks, and not the SciFi channel. Except for Farscape, still not too happy about that, either.

                      *rant over*

Since you live in Sweden, I can understand that. They stopped showing SG-1 there after just the first season, didn't they?
