    stardrive speed?

after reading the deadalus hyperdrive thread i began to think about the stardrive in atlantis and figured it was worthy of its own thread.
could 3 zpms be capable of rivaling speeds with the best asgard ships even when considering the size of the city?

Since we don't even know yet if the stardrive is hyperspace cabable or just there for sublight light. There is no point in discussing anything about it.

are you aware of how long it would take to get to th pegusas if the engines are sublight? im pretty sure we can say they are capable of at least some sort of hyperdrive

they may be sublight, they may be a form of FTL drives, but we don't know yet if they are hyperspace FTL drives. possibley onother form of ftl.

A Stardrive, IS a hyperdrive... or any other FTL engine for that matter. The word 'stardrive' is a non specific term that applies to any sort of drive that is capable of superluminal travel. Truth be told, the thread I started about the Daedalus hyperdrive would also sufficiently cover this topic as well. I left room for scale expansion, I just didnt' continue the calculations any further because I didn't see the point.

Well we'll see in (Not much of a spoiler but...) the Season 3 Atlantis episode Progeny, won't we? We'll see not Atlantis, but another sister city ship fly to Atlantis... but I thought Atlantis has some kind of hyperdrive.. it will be coool. When Atlantis took off from Earth in the Rising, it seemed to reach orbit pretty fast, was that sublight engines?

slip stream is hyperspace .. in basic sence. transwarp on the other hand, is slightly more complex than slipstream.

but warp, is faster than light, and, the speed of warp, not nessisaryly the technical sence, is more resonable for a ship the size of atlantis.

Though Atlantis may have FTL capabilities, I doubt it's faster than the Asgard since the Wraith cruisers' hyperdrive (derived from Ancient tech)doesn't seem to be that fast(took them weeks to get to Atlantis within their own galaxy).

...and what are you basing this on? We know for a FACT, that the Ancients had the Intergalactic Hyperdrive technology. That is one of the reasons the Wraith wanted to capture Atlantis intact during 'The Siege'. We also know from Atlantis that there are two basic kinds of hyperdrive technology, the 'slow' kind that most races have (including the Wraith), and the 'fast' kind used by the Asgard, and now Earth. Also, the Ancients didn't use Warp drive, or any other sort of FTL drive other than Hyperdrives. It is the 'prefered' method of FTL travel in the Stargate universe.

In a general sense, the word 'stardrive' is used to refer to ANY ship's means of propulsion. It is usually applied to a FTL drive, but it can be applied to a sub-light drive as well. 'Stardrive' is just a general term, not any sort of specific kind of 'drive'.

Well it's just an opinon. The Ancients may have been the most advanced race 10,000 years ago and had the most advanced hyperspace technology(relatively speaking), but since the alliance fell the Asgard had really come a long way developing it's hyperspace tech and I doubt any race (including the Ancients)nowadays can rival that. (maybe they could install a few Asgard hyperspace engines into Atlantis's stardrive)

Well, keep in mind, the Ancients (even 10,000 years ago) was a race that was well over 50,000,000 years old. I agree the Asgard have come a long way since the Alliance 3,000,000 years ago. However, the Asgard still have an extremely long way to go to catch up to the Ancients. As Thor said, they had been only able to decode a fraction of knowledge from the Ancient Repository, and even then they had only barely scratched the surface of the total knowledge contained. The Asgard are without doubt one of the most advanced races in our galactic group, but the Ancients are still far ahead of them. Putting Asgard hyperdrives on Atlantis would be a waste of time, and it would defeat the purpose of the goal you have in mind in the first place. The Atlantis hyperdrive engines are more than sufficient to make the trip back to Earth... they just need enough power to get the city off the planet, and into space in the first place; not to mention the power needed for the hyperdrive itself.

*edit was to correct a misspelling.*
