Exclamation Stargate SG-1 Role Playing Game

So I was lookign around my local geek store while my friends were searching for the new ShadowRun ediiton. I spotted something that immediatly caught my full attention, the Stargate SG-1 Role Playign Game Core Rule Book.

For thsoe who might not know what a real RPG is, think Dungeons and Dragons in the Stargate univers. You create a character based on several Ability, Skills, and Feat scores. Then you play(usualy with several people) a campaign created from the Game Master(the guy who runs and controls everything). You bascily live that character in that world.
I didn't get much time to look through it, but what I did see was interesting. Nearly the first 50 pages seemed to be backgroudn on the SGC and the Stargate universe, so even those who aren't particularly fans of SG-1 can get the background. There are military positions(Navy SEALS, Army Rangers, etc.) all of which have small influence on basic skills(Athletics, Knowledge, Treat Injury, so fourth). Then there is Military rank which plays a role on what equipment you can have and how much money you can get. Lastly is the character classes. This is the core of a character, and depending on what class you take determines what she will be good at(combat, diplomacy, skills, etc.). Some classes were Scientist, Soldier, and Archeaologist. They had some cool prestiege classes(the SG-1 team are all prestiege calsses, O'Niel is a Officer, Sam is a Brainiac or something, and Jackson was a Specialist, I think). All the classes have special abilities, like Sam's class has an ability called "Know-it-All" in which she gets HUGE bonuses to certain activities on a daily basis, like making a bomb out of a radio or something. Of course they have the attributes for the Go'uld and Jaffa. The firearms seemed pretty good, a little bit lacking in numbers, perhapes, but more weapons can be made easily. As far as I could tell, it was d20 based.

The book cost $50, pricey for the average Core Rule book. I'll have to take a few more looks at it to see if its any good. Anyone else seen this or possibly palyed and tested it out?

I have the core book. Even if you don't end up playing it, it's got some great info for the first couple of seasons, and it's pretty interesting to read. If you're an RPG'er it's actually pretty well written - the mechanics of play seem to be balanced pretty well from reading it several times. I don't have a local players group unfortunately, so I haven't had the chance to test it out (but if anyone is in the NE PA or Binghamton NY area and wants to get together, PM me). If I recall correctly, I read someplace the publisher lost the license and it's gonna be hard to come by. I got the last copy that Barnes & Noble in Binghamton has. I tried ordering the expansion books, but they said they couldn't get them. Once the school year ends and I get my summer checks in June I'll try to get them online.

http://www.stargatesg1rpg.com/ Is the link to the publishers. Full info there. Hope this helps. It does look like they've indeed lost the license, so if you find them in stock at a geek shop, snag them if you want them

Its funny because jsut a few weeks ago I was considerign starting a RPG system in the Stargate Universe. I was gonna use a mix of d20 Modern's weapon system and Star Wars' Diverse class ability system. I definetly have to check this one out and see how balanced it is, because thats always the toruble with first edition of anything.

I have the STARGATE SG-1 RPG core rulebook & associated errata/expansion books (5 in total, including the core rulebook); & am doing an on-line version of the RPG as we speak (Still very much a W.I.P., will let pple know when it's good 2 go!).

I for one am very happy I have the SG SG-1 RPG book series, & grew up with D&D/AD&D & the like; & can't wait to take it for a spin once I have more pple to play with! *lol*

As for paying $50.00, be grateful you live in the US; here in Australia, the core rulebook cost me $100.00 & the associated expansion boks/errata cost me $50 each - exspensive (as most SG merchandise is here - shipping, etc), but oh so worth it! - but considering they are out-of-print/not longer being produced, as Alderac had their liscence cancelled by Sony when they bought out MGM (thanks Sony Corp! *sigh*); it will be worth something if & when I decide to sell it (which will not be for a very long time! *lol*).

As a point of interest, they (Alderac) were on the verge of releasing S3 of SG-1 as an additional suppliment, but had their liscence cancled right before it could go to print - or so it is rumored - sucky, heh?

Ah I just picked up my copy today. So far it seems pretty solid, pretty generic for the most part. Although theres so much that goes into making a character(Macro-specialtys, macro races, ranks, etc.) that it seems like it would be tough to make an accurate assessment on how balanced the characters are. Although the level of customization is ridiculous, and I do like that. Maybe hopefully I can get a campaign started within a few weeks. Anyone have a general idea of a good level to start at?

It depends on what you're looking at. If you're looking for a good "test run" that's not going to be a long-haul campaign for character development, you may want to use mid-level characters (or high-level) to get a feel for how some of the more advanced skills play out before you have to invest the amount of time needed to play a character through the system to raise the levels normally.

My old rpging group used to run a short 3 session adventure with relatively generic upper-mid level characters to test out the "heavy artillery" for the character abilities whenever we'd try a new game. If it was fun for us, then we'd go through the ultra personalized character creation from scratch to make them start from level 1 and build from there (unless it seemed like it would really suck without the uber abilities) since all of us really liked seeing our characters grow.

That soudns about right. Yeah i'm pretty much the one person I know who likes Stargate and RPGs, so i'll have to do a little test run with my buddies to see if they like it. Maybe level 7 or 8 so that they can have some ranks in a prestiege class if they want.

Ahh, but i'm so fired up about this. I want to just get a bunch of people and get a campaign going. Ugh, the possibilities...

Edit: Hmm, one thing i haven't read anything about so far is a second attack. Like in D&D, Star Wars, D20 Modern, etc. when you get a base attack of +7 you automaticly get a second base attack of +1. Next level your base attack(s) are +8/+2, then +9/+3, etc. Then when your second attack reaches +7, you get another attack(+13/+7/+1). Anyone read anything like this in Stargate RPG?
