SG1 vs Atlantis Ancient Tech - Why so different

Atlantis ancient tech looks very cool and futuristic, whilst SG1 ancient tech is all built around stone temples and looks like a cross between stone age tech and modern stuff.

I am sure this has been asked before, but why so different?

As far as I understand its because the Atlantis Tech is newer. Once the ancients arrived in pegasus they had to start building a new network of stargates, etc. So it makes sense that they are the new version.

I'm guessing that once the Ancients returned to the MW galaxy, they didn't bother upgrading the older tech, as it still worked fine.

I think there's about 3 eras of Ancient/Alteran architectural design... this also includes the Ori.

The first era is the stone architecture. The second would be the one with Organo-tech looking design (Repository and Control Chair). The third would be the advanced technology looking design.

The Ori's designs look very similar to that of the First Era. Celestis' appearance demonstrates this. Which would make sense as they followed religious fanaticism more than continuing to advance their science.

However... that doesn't rule out the possibility that the current Ori technology is less advanced than the technology the MW and PG Alterans possess. It maky be equal to it, or greater than that of the pre-ascension Alterans.

Atlantis tech is older than 10000 years because in "Rising" at the very beginning, it said "Several Million Years ago" and showed Atlantis on Earth, then it took off...so obviously Atlantis is "several million years" old...its just been abandoned for 10000 years...too bad the ancients didn't leave instructions about ZPMs...

As for MW Alterran tech, 50 million seems a bit much...but I suppose its entirely plausible...they are the "Ancients"

Actually this is how it goes.

Stone like technology, Very much like the goa'uld's(That part of the anceints technology is very likly goa'ulds now)

            Futuristic Atlantis technology

            And then

Organo black evil looking technology. The reposerorys look like the orlin cannon and orlin descended I belive. They also said that the anceints stopped the humans on that planet and destroyed them.

So basicly *Millions of years ago* Stone stuff. *Few millions of years ago* Futuristic Stuff. *Few 1000 years ago* Organo like technology and ascended buster weapons.

They used time travel and maybe built certain tech in stone so the replicators would not be attracted to it. also after the ancients went back to the milky way some such as merlin continued to live amongst less advanced humans and didnt want to draw attention to their work by encasing devices in stone.

I think it was partly different architectural styles (WE have them, so why couldn't they?), and also different uses. The Stone structures are generally on planets, while Atlantis tech looks the way it does, because they are actually ON a ship. We have seen 'stone' technology on SGA. Remember the Sanctuary that Sheppard spent 6 months in? That had 'stone' tech. The hall of the Ancients' Repository was designed to stand for Ions of time, possibly many millions of years. So it had a very different architecture than has been generally seen of the Ancients work. Also, don't forget, the 'stone' architecture has the SAME crystal technology that the ships and city of Atlantis does. It is just an architectural difference, not a technological one.

Hit the nail on the head. We go through architectural design phases every few years. The Ancients were around for millions of years. It shouldn't be a wonder that there is variation in design; if anything, there should be more.
