Even if a Battlestar can go toe to toe with a Basestar it wouldn't have been the smartest move. The loss and damage as a result of the engagement would have been significant and if the Galactica had lost that would have left the civilian fleet completely undefended, it would have been a major gamble and even if they had won the loss of manpower and equipment would have been significant. There was another option and he took it and it panned out, sometimes the situation requires you think twice before rushing in.
