    The Ancient Language....Linguists I need your help

    The following, as all you Stargate fans know, is part of the language known as "Ancient" from the TV series Stargate SG1 & Stargate Atlantis. To this date the writers have only developed a little bit of the language. I wish to attempt to continue in its development, now I myself am not a linguist and therefore I am incapable of doing so without the help of one. Please note that I am serious here. I know this is not an easy task, but then if it was easy there would be no need for me to be asking for your help.

    "Ancient" according to the shows' writers, is the root language of Latin (Latin evolved from "Ancient").

    Here are the words that make up "Ancient" at the moment and their English translation (Please correct me if I am wrong):

    Ancient--------------English
    Astrea Porta-------Star Gate
    an----------------------the
    ani---------------------are
    Doemata-------------Sleep
    Fron--------------------Head
    Kozars-----------------leg(s)
    Kruvis------------------Wrong
    nu-----------------------we
    quietas-----------------Ancients
    falatis-------------------capability
    ego----------------------I
    indeo-------------------need
    navo---------------------new
    locas--------------------location
    itium---------------------reply to "Do you understand?"
    Feggus-----------------Finished
    Comdo------------------Please
    Asorda-------------------Help
    Deserdi------------------Wish
    Domatavus-------------Master
    vestul---------------------Uncertain
    Motabilum---------------Past
    Adventus----------------Approaching
    Perennial----------------Disaster
    Abicierum---------------To give up
    Deductavum------------
    Vis-------------------------Lost
    Uban----------------------City
    Lacun---------------------Of the Lost
    derentiu------------------insane

    Praclarush Taonas-----Lost in Fire

    And so we begin.
    Jackson: Oh Please! Teal’c’s like one of the deepest people I know. He’s so deep. Come on! Tell em how deep you are. You’ll be lucky if you understand this.
    Teal’c: My depth is immaterial to this conversation.
    Jackson: (Excited) Oh!! See?
    O’Neill: No more beer for you.

      No, not really. If one man can make multiple languages, then surly a couple of linguists could make one. Then again that one man was J.R.R. Tolkien.

        I think its a great idea you've got there, I know there are a few very good language people over in the Ancient Writing thread....They are brilliant at de-coding the ancient writings so maybe one of them would be suitable to help you with your project.
        I would help...but sadly the closest i've got to reading or speaking Latin is with a Latin-English dictionary

              When translators translate things, they alter it to make sense, I know from personal experience, because directly translating something can make absolutely no sense.

                Ok that makes sense, this is why I cannot develop the language by my self.

                  Im talkin to someone right now who says that these words look like they are Ancient Greek, which is the base root of Latin...

                  He said that earth, even in its base form is Gaia, not Terre... but he said Star Gate was right lol...

                  Anyway, he's taking Latin Classes, so I MIGHT be able to talk him into signing up to help ya a little bit, but I wouldn't count on it too much, I don't think he watchs the show...

                  Also, I found this site thats gotten a bunch of latin phrases on it... none of them correspond to what i've heard on Star Gate yet, but im only half way through them...

                  ======

                  A few words/phrase i've found that might have something to do with Atlantis or the Ancients:

                  Sub - Under

                  ab aeterno - from the beginning of time

                  a priori - from what comes before (Possibly where they got the names for the priors of the orii)

                  deus ex machina - god from the machine (there was an episode called Ex Dues Machina, which is why I put this here)

                    Just for fun, I went through and tried to find the Latin Corresponding word to the Ancients language, heres what I found so far:

                    Adventus------- appositus (close as I could find)
                    Perennial------- Calamitus
                    Abicierum------- Concedo (maybe)
                    Vis-------------- defluo (it was close)
                    Uban------------ Urbs
                    derentiu--------- dementis
                    Terre------------ terra

                        Yeah, the words I put under the latin category are those that mean the same thing, or as close to the same thing as I could find...

                          For "Proclarush Taonas", I think only the name of the planet, "Proclarush", actually means "lost to fire". No idea what "Taonas" (the name of the outpost) means, if anything.

                          Interestingly enough, the Omnipedia on the site says "Vis Uban" means "Place of Great Power" ? That may or may not be reliable, as "Uban" makes sense for "City"... go figure.

                            I've been trying to find people who can read latin good, but haven't found any... If I do find any, i'll try to get them to sign up and try to translate some un-known words.

                              Proclarush = Sphere (Planet)
                              Taonas = Label (City, Outpost)

                              Just like:

                              Terra = Sphere (Planet)
                              Atlantis = Label (City, Outpost)

                              The latin word for city is urbs or urbis, which isn't too far from Uban, but Jonus' translation doesn't mention the word city, even though Vis Uban was supposed to be the capital of the ancient civilization.

                              "Vis" is latin for "Power" however.

                              Oh yeah, and the word "Nox" is latin for "Night"
                              Jarnin's Law of StarGate:

                              1. As a StarGate discussion grows longer, the probability of someone mentioning the Furlings approaches one.
