1: They are safer. I'm pretty good behind the wheel, I've been driving motorized vehicles of one sort or another since I was 5 years old. But if some damned fool idiot does something I can't squirm out of, I want to be the one to walk away from it. Driving something nearing 5000 Lbs gives me better odds of doing that. Yes, its expensive to feed. But cheaper than irreplaceable body parts.

2: They are far more useful then the tonka toys people like to drive these days. Try towing a boat with some econobox. It doesn't work out that well.

Not everyone buys an SUV for the same reason. I got mine because it was practical to have a vehicle with extra space, and with gas at a $1.50/gal. at the time, I felt it was the right decision.
