Control of Ancient Artifacts

I recently rewatched Hathor and I kept thinking - would the Mexican government really ship a solid gold artifact found on their soil to the U.S. Air Force?

And then in Avalon - would England really stand by why the Air Force went down and picked up a treasure trove of ancient artifacts? Even if they didn't have the technology to retrieve it themselves - it is in their soil and they are our ally...shouldn't there have at least been a British scientist in the team.

In real life countries are very protective of their artifacts.
