This was,IMO,one of the more quirky eps in Season 2 .
I liked Sam getting command because of Jack's injury. I loved Tonane and his people.Despite their appearance,I admired the Aliens and their shape-shifting ability,as they obviously cared deeply for the tribe .
Usually,I get bored with "moral message" plots in shows, but I really enjoyed this episode .
The place to "Gate" to during Outages for updates and info:

I like how the aliens in SG-1 are really alien... not a human with an f***ed up forehead and pointy ears.

I like some of the concepts in this epsiode, but find myself cringing at the level of 'moral' lessons that it attempts to teach. Someone earlier in the thred mentions a sledgehammer... and that's what it feels like to me every time I see it.

I just saw in a behind the scenes extra on the DVDs that they had to use a dog instead of a wolf. (Duh ) So that means they had to tie the dog's tail down because wolf tails don't stand up like dog tails do. And this poor dog they got wouldn't respond to anything. All he did was walk around panting. I think they said it was one of the producers finally got the dog to respond by doing something really weird in his face. I think the scene is in the gateroom and the dock tips his head to one side in confusion. The typical "huh?" look for dogs.

I didn't know they used dogs. That dog must have felt so abused, but that's what these *evil* producers do to these poor little creatures.

Nah, I'm sure the dog was fine. All he had to do was wonder around and look at everyone

It seems that most people liked this eps.

For me it was just too strange, and wierd. The concept was good, but I think more work could have been done on the Indian part.

The "Indian" episode, it seems like every show has to do at least one, (see TOS "Paradise Syndrome" or TNG "Journey's End") I guess they want to appease the twinkie demographic

Spirits is better than most "Indian" episodes. They give us a real tribe, with an actual defined culture as opposed to most Hollywood Indians. Tonane was cool and Rodney Grant is a great actor. I think it would have been more interesting if it was the Salish themselves were technologically advanced and not the aliens. They would have made an interesting recurring ally.

I agree that the government's decision to screw the natives is a little heavy handed, it's not that surprising since it's an ongoing thing.

In what way? These aliens were violent and prepared to attack at short notice, something the Nox would never do.

When Tonane kept referring to the superiority of the ways of the spirits over the ways of the Tau'ri, I was reminded a bit of the Nox who disapproved of "our ways".

I don't know. They've got some pretty sweet casinos out where I live.

The only bit of moralizing that really made me cringe was O'Neill's little speech to Hammond when the General suggested deceiving the Indians. SG-1 just seemed a little too quick to jump on good ol' George when they've overtly participated in some morally ambiguous activities during past episodes. Other than that, I thought the whole Native American theme was well realized and a nice departure from the totally evil and totally good gods represented by the Gou'ald and Asgard, respectively. The Spirits were neither. Just fiercely loyal to Tonane's people.

I generally found this episode very heavy handed, and somewhat reminded me of the most preachy of the Star Trek episodes dealing with Native Americans on other planets.

Just made me want to change the channel.

Ah, what once was clouded is now clear. Thank you for clearing that up for me.
To me, the spirits reminded me more of the alien in Fire and Water, far more forceful than the Nox.

This one started a little wierd, but ended pretty well. The first half, while we're on the planet, the first time I watched it I got the same wierd feeling I got in the pit of my stomach every time I watch "Meridian". (it's gone away now, whereas Meridian's feeling hasn't) but after we came back to the SGC, it got better. Hated the nostrils on the spirits though. They were well-done and all, but I just mean I hate 'em because they're gross*shudders*
Yes, I really do look like (a younger) Daniel. Don't believe me? Look for yourself.
