Annoyed that Greer killed the 'deer'

Is anyone else annoyed that Greer killed the 'deer' right after misestimating the intelligence of the predator-creature?

There was no indication that the predator-creature was sentient, either.

Clearly they came out of that situation having learned nothing from it.

With the predator they learned that just because they look like unintelligent animals doesn't mean they are. The predator recognised their intelligence and vice versa.

Then they go and forget all that experience and assume the 'deer' is unintelligent.

True... and if they were, why did the predator hunt them?

But they were wrong about the predator.. that was my point: that they were wrong before.

the predator was able to communicate, even if it was in an unusual way.

but the deer appeared to act instinctively, running when startled.

while, yes, it could have been highly intelligent - the available evidence suggested that it wasn't likely. just like the predator took advantage of an opportunity with humans, humans took advantage of an opportunity with the deer.

Coincidently, we humans are also animals.

But the point is that they didn't know until after they communicated with the predator that it was intelligent. What I had hoped (and would have expected from the storyline) was that Greer would have reconsidered killing the deer based on that experience. Instead, they learned nothing from it and carried on as if it never happened. That is pretty much the point of characters having adventures - that they develop from the experience.
