Oh, definitely! I actually plan to explore some of those friendships in my fic as I go along. I'm already exploring the dynamic between Daniel and Sam. I think they'd have definitely been kindred spirits in the intellectual sense, despite focusing on completely different scientific areas, and this would've formed the basis for a strong friendship.

This. I do consider myself a shipper, but I strongly believe that nothing whatsoever happened while they were both in the service. I also agree with your other points concerning Jack's attitude toward Sam.

I don't think there were real love feelings from the start, but I think along the way he saw how strong and smart she was... and I think Jack knows that Sam can take care of herself... and she showed that early on in emancipation... and with that said because of what happened in emancipation (and earlier with her 'reproductive organs comment) Jack knows that she would be offended if he were to treat her as if she was a 'damsel in distress'.

I think that people can be friends with each other in a platonic way... which is how I think Sam is with Daniel - like a mutual respect... There is a possibility that Jack and Sam could get together and be good together, but there is also a chance that being separated for so long, they could shelve it, but I think there was always going to be feelings there... I would say the love part only really started in the ep where Jack said "I care about her ... a lot more than I'm suppose to." and that because that was practically an admission... him trying to save her (Insert ep name here) could have been friendship or something more... By itself, I saw it as being unclear, but strongly suggesting that he cared deeply for her... but when the makers of the show brought it up in Divide and Conquer it seemed as if they were saying it was more...

...Whether or not I think they are meant to be together or not is beside the point ... it was always up to the people who made the show because they know the characters more than anyone else because they know all their secrets even the stuff they didn't show us... they wrote them, thought about them a lot ... had to try their best to keep them as true to character as they could... (I'm not saying they always managed to do that, but they would've tried...because you lose viewers when you don't... )...

...but this is my opinion... and not the ultimate answer... and not the only answer...

I consider D&C to be the start of the unspoken relationship... but in saying that it only takes Jack or Sam to do something the other one can't forgive to end it...

Even if I were still a shipper, I'd have to say that really didn't see anything in this phase of the series that pointed to any real romantic feelings between Jack and Sam. Anything I'd have ever taken as a hint of that came later in the series. It really bugs me when people take stuff from later seasons and try to project it backward in time to the first couple of seasons: "Oh, it was always there!" No, not really, it wasn't. Even if it did develop later on (which is itself open to debate, and please note that at one time I was in the 'shipper camp myself so I've actually argued both sides at different points in my own time as a fan) it wasn't there then.

i watched four and a half seasons of sg1 before i got a computer and found fandom (and i bring this up b/c fandom *can* influence your opinion and impact on things)...

for me, i felt a shippy vibe in the first episode - 'ooh, you're attractive'. but in the 4th episode, 'broca divide', that's where i saw the !SHIP! sam could have chosen any one of her team (and have it logically explained why she chose so-and-so), but she chose jack, and it was the ptb officially starting it off to me.
