You sound like my sister...all she needs is a robe and we can call her a nun...
Realistically, people need to stop being offended by things like this. While I agree the general maturity level is lower than what it should be, we should be over the "there's boobs on TV!" phase. Unless you're really young in which case I could understand your point because you might still be in the "nudity is wrong" phase. That's fine, everyone is subject to that. But once people grow up it becomes less of an issue...or at least it should. On top of that, the fact that this particular example is a major part of the plot and they only used it once, means it was more than acceptable, necessary even.

A good quote on this issue is from Michael Fassbender when he was promoting Shame. A lot of people thought him showing his penis in the movie was so controversial but here's what he has to say about it:

"Half of us have a penis and the other half have probably seen one, and so why should it be more normal to, like, chop people's heads off and shoot people? Does that mean that that's more acceptable or closer to us as human beings?"

"You don't know what anybody else is going to feel, you just go for it and put it out there and hopefully other people connect to it in some way or another."
Our sole purpose on this planet is to reproduce and keep the species alive, so this concept of it's disgusting, distasteful, disrespectful, appalling whatever you want to call it to see people's reproductive parts is beyond me. The notion that it's unacceptable for those things to be visible is odd and we're the only species that cares about it. No I'm not a nudist by any means but I won't freak out when I see a boob or butt on TV.

Look at Game of Thrones for instance, you will hear people say "oh there's too much unnecessary nudity in the show I won't watch it." Yet those same people will read the books and will read those scenes being described and praise the books for being so fantastic. That is hypocrisy to the utmost. What does reading do? Invoke imagination to see what's on the page. That is no different than seeing it on the screen, you're seeing boobs either way.

Why? I see no reason to stop being offended by gratuitous female nudity that is used to unnecessarily sexualize situations. It's a form of exploitation, and I'm entitled to be offended by exploitation.

that's all so much blah blah. I haven't seen GoT so I can't comment on that. I'll "get over" a gratuitous use of female nudity when for every boob I see a penis.

ETA: you might think I sound like a nun but the reality is that I am as far from nunhood as it's possible to get. I've seen more porn films than you could shake a stick at when I was in the military (not voluntarily) and I'm not a shrinking violet.

I do object to the gratuitious porn shots of the penis like goa'uld slithering up Sha're's stimach and the nipple close ups while she writhed around. It's not an ep I'll be watching again in a hurry because of that, and as the mother of teenage girls I reserve the right to be a tad oversensitive at the overuse of naked female bodies in the media.

I don't need an argument about it - that's how I feel, and i'm not alone. In general a bit of nudity doesn't frighten me. A sudden surprise glimpse of nipple doesn't make me swoon like a Victorian maiden.

I guess I just didn't see it as a) gratuitous, b) sexualizing anything (why do people always equate nudity with sex?) and c) exploitative. I'm offended by male and female nudity that is any or all of the above, but for me this scene didn't come anywhere close to any of these.

And just in case anyone's missed the disclaimer in my signature section: I'm female myself. Firmly into my middle years and female, in fact.

          (Yes, I'm female. Okay?)

I'm amazed that some people actually see the symbiote as penis-like when it slithers around. I mean, seriously, the thought never even crossed my mind and sounds like someone has been overthinking things or is simply searching for something offensive.
            Unmade Plans (WIP: 11/20):
Sam's life takes a turn in an unexpected direction when she's faced with an unplanned pregnancy. The decision to keep the baby and raise it on her own will alter her life forever. Relationships are put to the test, especially the one between her and Jack. She doesn't know what to expect from him and he surprises her at every turn.

Actually, I wasn't referring to this episode, specifically. I was referring to Brian's declaration that people in general needed to stop being offended by female nudity. I don't think it's his place to tell people what their feelings should be.

Heheh, yeah. I mean, I've never seen a penis that did that (and at my age, I've seen my share).

Don't think anyone would want a penis like that or capable of doing something similar, male or female.

True that is your right, but how is just their front (boobs) gratuitous nudity?

...I only thought that about some of the zats and only from certain angles (one screen shot in particular) ...but I could be over-thinking that...

Facebook post about Alexis Cruz and the Audiobook he's done. If you're a fan of Alexis and his work - you'll love it. Book 1 and 2 are there now. The second one is brilliant, but I can't vouch for the first one (not having heard it), but I'm sure it's just as good, if not better.

Amanda Tapping once made a veiled comment about how those things often went flaccid and that's why the guys didn't like them and why RDA didn't have it as a standard sidearm... but maybe I'm overthinking that remark, too?

I was never sure if I was overthinking the zat thing or whether the makers of the show made them that way on purpose... because ancient cultures often had phallic symbols as part of their beliefs and stuff, so maybe they were actually designed that way on purpose to fit in with that...
