Hey, Jack/Sam Peeps! So, I'm late to the party (as usual), but I FINALLY got my Christmas fic done. It veered off into a completely different direction than I'd thought it would, and I didn't end up using any of the prompts. Sad days. Anyway, here it is. (I'm really hoping that I did the link thing right. It's been WAY too long since I used that function. Lol!)

I just started a series rewatch on Netflix. It feels like I'm hanging out with my oldest, bestest friend.

Yep! All ten seasons. I have both SG-1 and Atlantis on DVD, but it's a hassle to keep starting the next episodes, so I generally just stream them on Netflix.

              Hello all!

So, idk if any of you remember me, but I joined this forum back in uh........ 2008 ???? It was my introduction to the internet as I was 16 at the time and honestly, I just have the fondest memories for this place.

Because I moved to Vancouver recently, I've been getting back into Stargate and enjoying visiting locations like Jack's cabin. It's made me all nostalgic for my old internet haunts, so I'm overjoyed that this thread is still active! The S/J shippers never die haha

Anyway, sorry to randomly jump in and post a lot of off-topic stuff, but I just wanted to say thank you to anyone around from that era for making this place so wonderful and welcoming.

And onto the shippy thoughts! Rewatching this show as an adult really makes me appreciate the relationship on a more mature level, and see so many subtleties that I didn't get the first time around. I definitely understand their reasoning for not voicing their feelings before they were forced to. The end of season 3 is especially interesting because Jack keeps inviting Sam to socialise with him outside of work and she politely refuses several times. He says something about two coworkers hanging out and, a little too loudly, that there's "nothing wrong with that, is there?"

Honestly, these pining moments are what's really resonating with me as an adult. And it's really nice to see it through different eyes now and gain another level of understanding.

I'm still finding it weird that TPTB were obliquely writing a romantic arc and then after season 4 they just kinda... dropped it. Not totally, obviously there are many shippy moments and the thread does develop after that, but it recedes to the background significantly. And yeah, I'm still frustrated by the lack of Confirmation!

(I'm watching The X Files for the first time and the parallels are very intriguing... but even they got Confirmation eventually!)

Oh, and did you all hear about the possibility of a new show...?

LiliJ--I've recently gotten back into SG-1, too. It's like comfort food without the calories.

About the build up and then abandonment of the 'Ship, I think that, because the show was being advised by the military, they had to stand down on the Shippiness in order to conform to the military standards. Don't quote me on that, but I think I read somewhere that's kind of what happened. Also, I know that The Powers That Be really only started noticing the 'Ship during the "Out of Mind"/"Into the Fire" arc, and then built it up from there. That's on the director's commentary on those episodes. (Or of some thereafter.)

Anyway, I think that's what happened. I'm certain that other people here might know more about it than I do.

Hi Akamaimom!! Nice to meet you Totally agree — Stargate is the comfort food of shows.

Re theories on why S/J Confirmation didn't happen: ah, some of the old guard will have to chime in here! I remember this is something we used to talk about a LOT. What bits I remember are...

There were some writer/directors that were pro the ship and brought it out in their episodes (Martin Wood I believe was one of them), but others weren't so hot about the idea. However, the ship was very much written in from the beginning (see the S1 episode "Solitudes" and the S2 episode "Three Hundred Days").

The prevailing theory as to why we never got "Confirmation" is that at the time Stargate was airing, there were few longterm romances in scifi TV. The writers were afraid of saying "they will" to a will-they-won't-they romance — that if Sam and Jack got together onscreen, their chemistry would be lost and the show's viewership would dip. It didn't help that shows like Moonlighting and X Files apparently dipped in quality/viewership when their main couple finally got together. This was a real concern for the network.

Tbh, it seems like it came down to two factors: those in charge being totally divided on the issue, and them writing themselves into a corner in regards to the workplace/rank situation. This doesn't mean they couldn't have written a romance arc anyway — Sam and Jack could have started socialising outside of work, there could have been episodes where they got to together because they were stranded or lost their memories or any number of scifi concepts, they could have discussed their feelings more... So many options narratively, but the divided opinions on the matter prevented anything getting off the ground. It was a stalemate, and they never properly resolved it even when their main barrier (the rank/team situation) was removed.

I haven't heard this military theory though! I do find it intriguing, but considering that the characters so frequently disobey orders and call out people in charge I feel like if the real life military was gonna have a problem with anything in the show, it might have been that?

I've actually managed to interview a bunch of writers from Star Trek, Farscape, and other shows in my line of work. I don't do freelance entertainment journalism any more... but perhaps I should pitch a Stargate piece JUST so I can finally ask the writers this burning question! The 25th anniversary is coming up, after all...

Also, off topic, but how do I delete my sig? lol

Hi LiliJ! I sure do remember you. Lots of good convos. Yep, once a S/J Shipper, always .

What I remember about lack of confirmation is a combination what Akamaimom and you say. The military rule was no fraternization within chain of command. The PTB were divided. Writers basically played tug-of-war, one having them couple-like then another having barely being civil to each other.
                    Ah, but we survived!

You know, yours was one of the handles I remembered! It really stuck in my brain. "UhSir" is just so memorable

Honestly, the inconsistency just makes me want to write a fic to fill in the gaps... If only I had time. Hey, do you guys have any fic recommendations? Is there an approved SJ Shipper Family list somewhere? haha

And thanks for the sig help! I didn't realise I still had links to my old fics in there....................................... I sure was that teen fic writer with all the self-inserts, huh! o.O I think I'll make a new sig for myself next time I'm procrastinating work.

Also, I'm sure we've all talked about it countless times, but I'd love to know everyone's headcanons for when Sam and Jack had the "oh" moment of realisation when they figured out when they had feelings for each other...

There's a fic recommendation thread somewhere, but I'm not sure where, or how to link it here. (I'm kinda useless.) But I'm still writing (albeit more slowly than I did years ago), and I know that others are still writing, too. I'm on both A O 3 and Fanfic dot net as "Akamaimom". I'll share a link to one of my newer fics below.

From GateWorld Forum main page go to Stargate Fandom, then to Fan Fiction from you should be able to the SamJack focused thread.
No Sam w/o a Jack and no Jack w/o a Sam.

Thanks so much for the fic recs! I've got one to offer in return, which I found recently on Tumblr and you can find here.

Also, I've got the go-ahead on this anniversary article*, so if you have any burning questions for the writers or cast, shoot 'em my way!

Also, out of interest — what are the main things you'd have liked the show to explore in terms of the S/J relationship?
