Jack O'Neill/ Sam Carter - Part of a team, not a ship

It was a pretty shameful admission when TPTB said they didn't know what to do with Sam's character. It totally proves that they'd painted her into the Jack's Girl (except she wasn't) corner. Then again, they rarely wrote female characters well, and Sam suffered more than most, especially when it came to the alleged romantic feeeelings stuff. She was done a huge disservice by the Turning Up at Jack's House and Questioning Him About his Ex-Wife scene (when Jack was slowly dying) and Acting Like a Lovelorn Schoolgirl scene on his deck during his fun (and believable!) affair with Kerry. Eugh. *shivers for poor Sam*

Dumb!Jack would have sent Sam running for the hills ...

They stripped every decent storyline from Sam, including the Jolinar legacy, and her difficult (at times) relationship with her father. Then she became little more than The Love Interest. Then Jack left and she suddenly became interesting again and gained some character development. I love that she got to command The Hammond. What a shame they wasted valuable screen time on a storyline that didn't do her any favours and never went anywhere.

Couldn't agree more. Season 9 and 10 are much better than 4-8, despite the fact that I love the Goa'uld and never liked the Ori. I simply cannot stand Sam mooning for Jack.

I so wish they had used the Jolinar plot thread more, it was interesting and a SFnal story line, including Martouf, and it was a plot specific to Sam only, something uniquely hers. Ditto her Father, and Janet, and Cassie. But, of course, she had that fabulous, oh so popular, so unique and never before seen affair with her boss, which put Romeo and Juliet, Dr Zhivago, Pride and Prejudice and Love Story to shame! So that's all right then...

Yes, I wanted way more about the Jolinar angle (and I wanted more Martouf too...). The effect Jolinar left on Sam was incredibly interesting and very Sci-fi - not like just having the second in command woman wanting her boss

Agreed. If Sam and Jack really wanted each other so much, why didn't they just screw and get it over with? Then they could move on, instead of keeping UST going for years and years and years... no normal person behave that way!

I'm trying hard to remember the actual episode that "hooked me"...I think it was Thor's Hammer or Chariot and I was impressed by the fact it was an "adventure" story...no romance, no stupid humour, just intelligent team work...in fact I think it was Chariot and it was the Sam, Daniel & Gairwin bit where they were trying to solve the Thor problems....such great teamwork and characterisation from the "Science Twins"....I LOVED it and decided I wanted to see more of this programme....but it was only on a second rewatch a few years later that I began to realise that some romantic "flab" had been inserted in many episodes that I'd obviously not watched (looking after house & kids at that time, so missed a lot) and I began fast forwarding through certain scenes and episodes because I was bored witless with Sam and Sir

And yeah, I'm too so NOT a fan of Pigtail Vala or her off-colour sense of humour re the taunting of Daniel interminably, but again that's OT in this thread

I LOVED the Hathor episode, which I guess very few others do, but for some reason Hathor is just one of my all time favourite characters. Aside from that episode, I don't think I was really hooked until In the Line of Duty. I thought the idea of the Tok'ra was fascinating and fairly unique, and was rooting for Jolinar to survive. Still wish she had. It remains one of my favourite episodes, along with most other episodes with the Tok'ra, and most "classical" SG-1 fights the Goa'uld episodes

I found SG1 flipping channels one night and caught a re-run of one of the early season episodes. What I like was the adventure to new cultures with a team that operated on mutual respect with a little splash of situational/character based humor.

The first episode I watched was Children of the Gods - it's actually still one of my favourites.

I didn't watch the episodes in order at first - caught one here and there. I LOVED the Hathor episode, which I guess very few others do, but for some reason Hathor is just one of my all time favourite characters. I rather enjoyed the Tok'ra episodes too, they were an interesting take on the main villains and I don't think TPTB made the best use of them.
As an episode, Hathor is corny as a very corny thing but the actress, while chewing scenery left, right and centre, is great. And I totally loved watching the female staff revolt, that part could have been much longer for me. Sam's quote when she knocks out Hammond... brill.

A winning formula, helped by a fabulous cast, and not strained by melodrama and overused soap plots.

my favorite SG-1 ep was Torment of Tantalus great blend of stuff from movie and team ep I am partial because Daniel was a major part of it.

I divorced my Jack and Sam clones lol it was an amicable they decided they were better off as friends and stayed friends because I like to ship in my AU Sam is with Agent Barrett and I am still deciding who for Jack but I am leaning toward Janet in my AU she did not die I am the Supreme Goddess in my AU

If you have Sky One or Sky Two they're both doing a re-watch from the beginning...Sky One is doing one episode at 3 pm daily during the week (no good for the workers sadly ) and I think is still on Season 1 .....Sky Two are doing two episodes a night at 6 and 7 pm respectively and a 6 episode marathon catch up on both Sat and Sun.....yesterday on Sky Two we were up to Spirits - Season 2 - Sam was in charge, doing her best with the sceptical scientist part against the Daniel cultural/spiritual believe in anything part and some of the team banter and work - even with RDA out of a much of the location filming was priceless....an episode that gets a lot of "stick" for it's "faffy-ness" I LOVE it....it's true sci-fi - REAL alien looking Aliens, a bit of mystical shenanigans and all the cast interacting well with each other....


Those early seasons show up some glaring errors of course, but as I rewatch them more and more I realise what precious moments we got from a series that in it's time was without doubt one of the best around on TV.....

I don't have Sky (wouldn't give Murdoch a penny of my money) but I have them all on DVD, I just need to Get My Act Together and do a re-watch. I want to do a re-watch of DS9 too. Both series had some dodgy early episodes (DS9 had some first season episodes which make SG1's dodgy episodes look like Chekov, but then it did end on the utterly sublime Duet, one of the best TV SF episodes ever.
There is a definite charm to early SG1 episodes, even crappy ones mostly had redeeming features and the core of the show was the team, the ensemble and supporting cast, rather than the soapy dross of the later episodes.

From what I remember, I'd say no, I only thought they almost kissed, but to be honest, it's years since I saw that episode, didn't enjoy it much the first time, so I've not bothered to re-watch it.

To jog your memory:

Sam(!) initiates the near kiss but before they can touch they stop and the camera pans down to Kvasir, who is looking up at them.

Kvasir: "I have completed the calibrations"

Carter: "Thank you, Kvasir"

Carter smiles at Martouf, who does a small grin back. The pair then immediately leave the room as the camera remains on Kvasir, who blinks like an innocent child who doesn't know where his mommy and daddy have just disappeared to in a hurry. Where did they go? The Prometheus? Carter's quarters?

That's the last we see of Martouf until the final scene where SG1, Landry, et al have been seeing every single extra SG1 team back to their respective universes, with the Frasier/Martouf team last to go. Martouf and Carter are standing VERY close (looks like Carter might be partially leaning against Martouf) and he kisses her on the cheek after saying "It's been nice working with you again, Sam." They look comfy together, like lovers.

They could have done hanky panky at any time after the almost kiss. It could have been where they were going when they left a confused Kvasir in their wake. It could have been after their trip on the Prometheus but before they began seeing the SG1s back to their universes. If Sam's feelings for him were strong enough to initiate a kiss, then who's to say she wouldn't have wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to have sex with him, seeing as how it was her last chance she'd ever get to see him?

This thread is not so much about "non-shippers" as "anti-shippers".

We are not fans of Jack/Sam. We have little interest in Sam's interminably dull love life - aside from the fact that we dislike Jack/Sam.
