I have every DVD from the first three years of the show, three or four from S4 and none at all from S5 onwards. In fact there are only about a dozen episodes from Seasons 4-7 that I would like to have on DVD and I'm not prepared to spend my money on buying three episodes I dislike, or am indifferent to. in order to get one good episode. That's what my video recorder is for, although I wish there was a way of removing adverts when I record things whilst out of the house!

why do u think any shows popularity is based on the ratings of repeats? I agree on DVD sales, but why repeats?

I'll jump in and answer this one...

It's called staying power. If a show is good, people will watch it again and again (repeat ratings will be high). If it's bad people wont watch it after the first airing (low repeat ratings).

So far the repeats are doing great (#1 for sci-fi shows) and are doing well even on second/thrid repeats.

But aren't repeat ratings irrelavent if the original airings of an original episode gets excellent ratings, but at the sametime the show gets horrible repeat ratings? And yes, its good that Stargate's ratings are good even in the repeats

I think that they have a perfect relationship now. It is obvious that they care for each other , they are so there for each other, and there is a sort of bond between them that doesn't need to be spoken or acted out. I think that a couple type thing would be less special for this show and these people. I am only expressing my own personal take on it. I think they have a better than relation-ship.

I didn't understand your last part. 'I think they have a better than relation-ship.' Can you please rephrase?

If a lot of people tune in to watch a brand new episode, then the rating for that episode will be good. If those people dislike the episode, then they won't watch it when it is repeated, so the rating will be bad. If they like the episode, then they will watch it every time it is repeated so that particular episode will always get a good rating. It is a good indication of the popularity of individual episodes and different series (seasons).

True, but wouldn't you think if repeats on a show always gets bad ratings and the original episodes (or first run) gets good ratings every week, would you say that each episode is bad, wouldn't that make people stop watching the show?

Most of the networks only pay attention to the first-run ratings when considering renewing a series.

And that's the trick with ratings.
Season 7 had good ratings because people didn't know how bad it was going to be and how much Sam or JS ship or bad plots were there.
When a show starts to go downhill and fans are not happy, ratings don't drop immediately.
It's a slow thing, if I don't like an episode, two or three I will not stop to watch a show right there.
But ratings of stargate will drop, slowly, but they will.
As it happened with any other show that was bad.
If you add the fact that TPTB are pi$$ing off many fans, then it's very likely that ratings will drop.

Increasingly the DVD sales are being factored into the profitability forecasts for many shows. Repeat ratings are held to be the pertinent ones when it comes to predicting DVD sales.

I'm not very clued up on how things are in the US though. I heard that s6 reruns on SciFi were doing so badly that they stopped them, and the second half of the season never got repeated. Or was that s7? If that's true, then did that have any sort of effect on anything?

S6 is still airing in syndication in the US so it won't even start to air on SCIFI until at least the fall. Or next year. Or something.

Dunno about S7. As far as I know, eps have still been airing on Fridays, so that's probably a good sign. Or a sign, anyway.

SciFi aired Season 6 reruns up till Season 6 started into syndication, which is why SciFi had to drop them.
