However, tptb invented a character that is so hated by the shippers I can make him into a cold blooded murderer in a fan fic and the readers don't care. I write a "love interest" for Jack that has to die in the story for the arc and I'm accused of writing a "mary sue" and get threatening reviews.
Threatening reviews!!!!!!! I've never heard of such a thing! And the poor actor, hate mail? He was only doing his job, how can people be so petty?

In my own little world, Janet, Jacob and the Asgard are still alive and well. Hammond is still in charge of the SGC and Jack never made it past Colonel.

After researching "generals" in general...the position is more of a political flag position and I have no idea why Jack would even be promoted to General. He really doesn't fit bill.

Also, Hammond could have been a colonel and run the base...colonel's do run bases too. The SGC would be a secret base with in NORAD, there would be no reason to have another general in there.

Colonel's in general seem to be more administrative than field...Jack shouldn't have been more than a Lt. Colonel for the show...but since the movie had him in charge of the military...it would make sense for him to be a colonel but not for him to go through the gate.

Anyways, When RDA left they had an opportunity to really a line the show with the regs and bring in fresh blood.

Instead, Sam was wallpapered and made dumber while regs were completely tossed out the window with the Landry/Lam issue.
I was so annoyed at wallpapering Sam. I was really hoping that (plus ) would get a good showing in 9 & 10. And there were some good episodes, not having Jack there should have given us an interesting new dynamic, but too many lost opportunities and they kind of lost their way a bit.

Yes, threatening reviews that belittle you...such as "How dare you make this fic into a mary sure. I hate you and hope god strikes you dead." blah, blah, blah....OR "How dare you ship Sam with Daniel. YOU are a Sam/Jack writer. How can you be converted??

btw, I never actually shipped Sam/Jack. Just continued the little hinting tease now and then.

OR...I even got reviews that were along the lines of..."You can't ship Vala with Daniel. Daniel belongs with the OC you created. I hate Vala, blah, blah, blah..." btw, Vala in the fic was written in the same context as the OC she replaced. lol...my god, those fan fic readers can be lemmings too.

Oh, Vala and Mitchell had such potential, same with the new general, but all was wasted on comedy routines.

Good grief, lol. Really? There's some weirdness around, ain't there? Reminds me of the Daniel-fan who wrote a fanfic in which Jack beats Jonas to death. Some people can't take their character or ship being "slighted", whether by the show or a fanfic writer. You're left wondering if someone forgot to take their meds.

I served with doctors who were Commanders (O-5 level Airforce equivalent Lt
Colonel) right out of residency training. Janet as well, making her only a Captain was insulting as well. Anyone in the Airforce might still talk bad about her but not about the promotion thing. Jack would have never made General unless he has at least a master's degree either no matter what his experience.
When I first started watching SG-1 I had to check the comparative British/Canadian v. USAF grades because I wondered if I'd been mistaken. (USAF grades are based on Army ones, while Commonwealth Air Forces have Navy based equivalents. US Colonel = Group Captain, US Major = Squadron Leader, etc.)

Anway, on the topic... Carter was put on an elite, classified team without the benefit of Jack's input (he didn't know her). Years later she was appointed leader of Atlantis by the IOC, a civilian decision. As if there'd be any doubt as to her merit from anyone that matters just because she hooked up with Jack after he retired. Who'd care what airman Joe Smutt might be snickering about them (and about everyone else) to orderly Jane Snogg in the broom closet cuz he doesn't know what he should really be doing with his tongue

Not Carter or her colleagues or the generals who promoted her, that's for sure.

I did a lot of research into military comparative ranks for my own monster epic that I've been 3 years on. It's very interesting to see the differences between not only the branches but the counties as well.

One thing that always bothered me about Atlantis...other than the show's general lack of direction, a story arc, and constant revolving cast, is there is absolutely no reason to have a "civilian expedition" to another alien city, in another galaxy...far, far away and have a legitimate reason to even send anyone there...especially when "space ship" travel was just a year away....lol. OMG...there is so much wrong with premise of that show I don't even know where to begin. (I completely lost interest in the show after 6 eps this season.)

Carter on Atlantis...I knew that was a mistake and the the sow runners had no idea what to do with Sam when AT stated in an interview..."It's like playing a whole new character."

When the actress says it's a new character...the character is no longer the one she was playing.

Hence what happened to SG-1 or aka Stargate Command. MS stated in an interview, "It's like a whole new show."...............

            .............indeed it was.........

I'm sure there was plenty of hate mail from S/J shippers to the actor and TPTB about Pete, but it wasn't just the shippers alone that disliked the character or the story line.
There was a thread here in Gateworld (named the Anti Pete thread or something) which was full of posts from people that didn't like the 'stalker' aspect of the character, or the way Sam told him about the Stargate programme (when various other people, like Jacob, were never told) etc., and who weren't necessarily shippers.

I'm sure it must have been unpleasant for DdL to read these letters, but surely his brother would have known that the character/storyine would not be liked by many fans and warned him about the possible (bad) reaction?

(I also think that if anyone thought that Pete/DdL was any version of Jack/RDA, then they seriously need their eyes looked at. )

He's an actor, it's a character in a TV show. Pete wasn't real. Non of the characters are. It was a just a job, his brother shouldn't have to warn him that doing his his job will elicit hate mail.
People who are so far removed from reality that they send hate mail to an actor are, at worse seriously sick in the head, at best, a disgrace to fandom and make me ashamed to be a fan of the same show as them.

I don't think DdL is as attractive as RDA but he's a perfectly good looking man, you couldn't make a sensible case for calling him ugly.

I interpreted what dipsofjazz said about the RDA/Pete comparison as that Pete is nothing like Jack in terms of the character. I think DDL is kind of cute, but I think RDA is smokin'

Why should he have to? People who send any kind of hate mail to PTB, actors, fan writers, etc seriously need to get over themselves. It's pretend, people.

I felt bad for DDL. He's just an actor doing his job. He shouldn't have to apologize for it.

Oh, I'm not condoning the action of the letter writers. I just think, especially after the events of the season 6 cast changes and the way the fandom acted then, PdL should have been aware of what could happen, and perhaps forewarn his bother.

You know, I kind of liked that DDL doesn't have conventional leading man looks. It's more interesting to me, but then I like the offbeat pairs better than the obvious ones.

Maybe PDL doesn't hang out on the internet as much as JM.

yes, I thought it said something about Sam that she wouldn't need to pick a guy that had typical alpha male good looks. I think his sense of fun was key for her.

I'm sorry, but I didn't intend to come here and start something about Pete. I apologise if I've come across as doing this.

I only wanted to reply to Jackie when she mentioned shippers having a 'cow' re. Pete. I just wanted to point out that it wasn't just the shippers that had a problem with the character.

I'll now leave you alone to continue your discussion.
