No, you are not alone with those feelings. I too am perplexed as to why the writers have not utilized Sam's abilities to activate technology such as the healing device - or ribbon devices - in the past many seasons. They are using Jack's abilities to activate Ancient tech (IGTBK) and they are revisiting Daniel's ascension in the last half of Season 8.

    .
    .

I could never understand also why they never expanded on Sam's ability to use Gou'ald hand device, we saw her reaction after blasting Seth
into the ground imho they should have let her use it again over the years but add in her feelings as to why she really does not like using them.

You're right about Jack and his gene and him being able to use the "chair" but i'm sitting there and saying "but what about Sam, she has special abilitys as well!"
To me Sam's abilitys are just being used as a plot device and nothing more, sad waste of a good plot line for Sam imho.

Let the word go out from this date and time that, henceforth, all true followers of the esteemed character, Samantha Carter, and her honorable creator, Amanda Tapping, will be known as Samandans.

Furthermore, let all Samandans emulate the strength and dignity and poise of their respected namesakes.

Let Samandans be sure of foot and quick of mind.
Let Samandans be slow to judge and fast to defend.
Let Samandans be loyal of friends and faithful to duty.
Let Samandans be refreshingly real and uncommonly wise.
Let Samandans be confident in victory and humble in defeat.
Let Samandans be comfortable with self and tolerant of others.
Let Samandans be curious of thought but dubious of rumors.
Let Samandans be kind of word and generous of spirit.
Let Samandans be ready to laugh and open to wonder.

In order to counter the negativity that oft appears elsewhere, let Samandans be defenders of truth and integrity regarding all things Samanda.

Let all who dwell in the land of Samanda, prosper and be well.

      Hear, hear!

*bows to the greatness that is Samandans*

I truly missed seeing Carter in tonight's episode of PU and found
myself a bit miffed when I saw Valla use the healing device on
Daniel. I was once again forced to watch yet another ex-host
use gou'ald technology and found myself getting irritated that
we have yet to see Carter really learn to take advantage of
        this ability.

I'm assuming that Carter's short time as host didn't give her
enough knowledge to efficiently control these devices, but I
question why this can't be taught by a Tok'rah. I just think
it would add a lot more depth to Carter to have her delve into
this aspect of her life a bit more than being forced to watch
her be used as a lab rat again.

Am I alone in these feelings?

I wasn't going to watch it (Daniel's not my fave enough to watch an entire ep of just him), but I had some maintenance to do on my computer and I wanted to check out Sam's TEMPORARY replacement for FIVE eps of next season. I thought the ep was alright. And it rated only alright because SAM WASN'T IN IT.

And I had the same exact feeing/reaction when I saw Vala using the healing devise. I thought, hey, that's Sam's forte!

I added a post with a link to this thread (to make it easier for anyone who is new to the forum to find us)

For folks on this thread, click here to go directly to the poll
so you can cast your votes for Best Carter Episode of Season 1!!
After you vote, come back here and post your comments
about why you voted for which episodes.

          I'll start the discussion...

I voted for Singularity, Enigma and Within the Serpent's Grasp.

Singularity - because it was simply a stand-out episode for both the character of Sam Carter and the acting range of AT. Sam's interaction with Cassie was wonderful to watch. The amazing elevator scene, where Sam is tortured with having to leave the small girl at the bottom of the facility.

Enigma - because it introduces Narim as a character who sees something special in Sam Carter. I made the following screen captures for Chocdoc

And then there was that wonderful 'emotion recording device'
and Sam's surprise at feeling his feelings for her.

Within the Serpent's Grasp - for favorable comments made by other folks earlier in this thread; e.g., Carter going along with the team when they take over the gateroom to gate out against orders.

          .
          .

I messed up (didn't read it through) and voted for just one ep (I thought that's all you could do). I voted Solitudes. This ep really had it all (concerning showing just what Sam was made of). If I'd voted for the other two I could have, I would have chosen Emancipation (kick-butt Carter!) and Singularity. But Solitudes is my all-time first choice for first season ep.

Yes, I promise to vote this weekend - haven't had time to even check the page out yet. Am *finally* going back to work this morning - have a class to teach at noon - so just checking in briefly here.

I want to respond quickly, though, to the postings about Sam and the Tok'ra healing devices. I agree completely that there is so much potential for this arc - she has the hidden and undeveloped power to either heal or destroy. I wonder if what she did to Seth with a device is something that would work on RepliCarter if it ever came down to a showdown of sorts. So, here we go with the new chick on the block last night (Claudia Black) and she's already revealed that a) she had been a host and b) she's up to using healing devices. Holy Hannah - they're stealing Sam's plot lines already!!

As a Samandan, I demand my rights! Sam's memories and abilities from Jolinar should be further developed rather than replaced by some invading female with sex on her mind and a bad a-t-t-i-t-u-d-e. Cheap shot, writers, cheap shot. Couldn't you have thought of some other talents for Vala?

I just worry that Sam's role will be diminished even more by this. I want to see Sam doing these things (including the martial arts BTW) - not just gal in black.

And, then, we have Lt. Colonel MM (aka known as the other FU - oops! excuse me, that stands for Farscape, Unemployed) coming on to probably head the team in Sam's absence. Hey BB should bring a lot to the show, but not at the expense of our Sam I hope! I'm willing to cut the writers some slack here, but I do question his having the same rank as Sam. And is fly boy gonna be ready to give back her command once she returns to duty?

Okay, I feel better ... got that off my mind. I've followed the Samandan rules of conduct by being "fast to defend" our gal, Sam!

Feedback, comments? What do my fellow Samandans think about this invasion of Sam's space?

Tara - look forward to meeting you and your hubby too! This will also be my very first scifi con and I'm excited about meeting Amanda. I'm hoping that my daughter will be free to come with me. You'll get to meet two crazy Americans, instead of one!

For any of you who may not know, the GABIT acronym means: Get Amanda Back In Town (London) and was begun by some of her most loyal followers over there.

The event has been cancelled twice (and very regrettably by AT due to scheduling changes and her pregnancy) ... we're still keeping our fingers crossed that she will be able to appear sometime this Fall of 05 (and maybe bring Baby Sam with her).

I'm not too far from Norwich. I'm in Ipswich. It's not far away by train.

I love my Country too but I want to move to Vancouver hehe.

Good luck with drama school! My daughter has a degree in theatre. Where are you going to study? Maybe, one day, you'll get a role on Stargate.

Then you can relocate to Vancouver!

Much success and stay the course! It's not an easy profession to pursue. You may have to do your share of aspirin commercials just like AT, but, hopefully, one day your big break will come.

once we get dates for gabit, we'll have to start a gabit attendee thread over in fandom

we'll havea GW meetup or something

as to the poll, i don't know why the thread was closed, but it's open now, so head on over and vote. more the merrier, and actually, the more votes we get the more accurate the results

I want to study at The Birmingham School Of Acting as I love singing as well as acting and if you show potential in your first year there then there's a chance you can specialise in musical theatre which I have most of my amateur experience in and which I love doing so much though I am a weaker dancer than actress and singer.

Thanks for the good luck wishes. It's an ambition to move to Vancouver and work on Stargate Atlantis with David Hewlett and Torri Higginson so who knows maybe one day I will be lucky and make it. When I decided I wanted to be an actress and met Amanda for the first time she gave me some great advice and support. She's lovely. I really hope one day I can make her and everyone who's supported me proud.

I found myself thinking about some of these same things while watching PU last night. It will be interesting to see how TPTB insert Vala into 5 episodes. She was interesting in one episode, but can they keep that much quirkiness watchable for more than a couple of shows? And like you, ChopinGal, I hope it's not at Sam's expense.

I do think there's a reason that TPTB haven't allowed Sam to become proficient in using the healing device. It's the same reason that they made the sarcophagus have a nasty side effect. If it was that easy to heal everyone, there would be zero drama if someone got hurt or died. We would know that there was no risk, since Sam would just heal them immediately. Can't have that, can we?

I do wish that Sam's Jolinar imprint could be explored more. When was the last time they referred to it? I guess it just fell into the black hole of forgotten storylines.
                          .

Lucy Lou ... I think I remember you! Aren't you the little lass that Amanda spoke to directly on one of the live-chat transcripts (months or years ago)?! There was some young woman who wanted to pursue a career in the arts, and, because of my own daughter's life, I was paying attention to that dialogue between AT and her fan. It was either the live chat or a published transcript of another AT interview ... were you the girl she was talking to?

Well, singing and dancing and acting too - here comes our next Julie Andrews and we'll put you in those Vancouver mountains and you can swing around and sing "The Sound of Music" ... Amanda can join you on her guitar.

Follow your passion, sweetie! It's what I've told my own kids and my students.

                            All the best!

yep, i've been to 4 gatecons but i've never been to the UK before, so i'm pretty stupid when it comes to that

it sounds like a great thing though. I wanted to go when they first announced it but there was just no way i could afford it. then it got cancelled which is actually working out better for me. This year, i can't do gatecon because of the dates, so Gabit will be my only con for the foreseeable future

I have a friend who's been to the uk once or twice and our plans are to fly over together. You'll like sue, she's a shipper too (Sue Corkill, she writes a lot of sam/jack fic and edits the zine Revelation)
