ok, i haven't actually read all the posts that i have to catch up on but i'm going to add my thought anyway.
personally i wanted pete to be a really good guy (but not for the relationship to go as far as it did, 'cause i didn't want the good guy getting hurt). i felt that if pete were a great guy, and sam still couldn't get over jack, and she was still totally in love with jack, that it would completely resolve the s/j issue once and for all. she tried with a genuinely great guy, who ended up knowing about the stargate, (perhaps through discovering a goa'uld through genuine policing), and it didn't work because she was in love with jack. the end.
i think thats still what they tried to do, but i just felt that pete was not the "great guy" they seemed to think he was. i never felt he was worthy of her after chimera. now i admit she never should have let the relationship go as far as it did, but hey, its sam! she's not exactly great with the whole personal life thing. (eloquent, i know)
