    Kiddie politics, eh?

I was always really outgoing, and very lucky I guess, I always had a gaggle of friends. But I'll tell you a story - because this conversation reminded me of it. A lot of the kids that went to my junior school (when I was in grade 4 and 5) lived on the same street as me, or very nearby. We used to play a game called "kick the can" - which is like a combination of hide and seek and capture the flag, I suppose. When I was in grade five, I had friends from the grade four and five and six classes who'd all meet up with me outside my house, about thirteen or fourteen of us, to play KTC a few evenings a week, and on weekends.

Well, one day one of the "unpopular" girls from class was sitting out on her lawn (she lived three doors down), and in between games, my mother had come outside to water our lawn. She pulled me aside and said: "Why don't you ask that girl to play, too?"

I remember thinking - why would I want to do that? But my mom said, "she's been watching you guys play for an hour, I think it'd be nice if you asked her to play too." That was my mom. She never "told me" to do things outright back then, she'd make suggestions, and for some reason I always felt BAD if I didn't take them, even as a kiddie. Well, I think I said something like: "We already have teams, there's no more players left." - to which my mother replied: "You can make new teams. If you ask her to play, the other kids will let her play too. And she'll feel included. And you'll feel good too because you did a nice thing for someone else."

(I really didn't WANT to break up our teams because I loved the team I was on, but...) I said: "Ohhh-KAY." And I marched across the street, three doors down and up to her. I said, "hey, we're playing kick the can, you wanna play?" (It's funny I remember this so clearly, like it was yesterday). And she looked up at me, she had these HUGE blue eyes (I remember thinking, i wish MY eyes were that blue!), and she nodded, and said, "Sure. I'm Shauna."

I said: "Yeah, I know." (Well, I did, she was in my class - lol - but I guess because I never really talked to her, she figured I didn't know her name). Shauna came over to my driveway with me, I introduced her to the other guys and added her to my team (because she was new, we didn't count the extra player). And later, she found the most INCREDIBLE place for me and her to hide behind this one house, near their backyard gate. She was really good at finding hiding places.

Next day at school, I called her over to eat lunch with us in the gym. And she sat down, and my best friend (at the time) started talking with her as though she'd always been part of our group and, I remember feeling like ... this is neat. Yesterday, she was uncool, and today she's friends with my friends, and my mom was right, I DID feel really good about that (as hallmarky as that might sound ).

I decided (in my grade five head) right then and there that I was never going to NOT talk to anyone because they were supposedly "uncool" again. And I'm proud to say I kept that vow, all through the rest of middle school and highschool.

I was blessed with many friends, and Shauna remains one of my best friends, even today (though she lives in New York now with her husband and daughter).

Kid politics, huh? I figure I had an epiphany in grade five, and I think it made me a better person. I have to thank my mom for that (among so many other things she taught me). That's why she's getting a Valentine from me this year (as she does every year), too!

    mini(the slightly nostalgic)geek

EDIT-> I might add that Shauna taught me how to climb trees! She was scary good at that. But I taught her how to pile up and then excavate a proper snow fort. So I think it was a fair trade.

I don't think so, Sky. I honestly believe there are more good people in the world than not. The "not" kind are just louder and often more resounding, given their... "not-ness". A lot of the great people out there are quiet and unassuming, but given the right circumstances - wow, look at 'em shine.

I was the geeky, gawky girl who never really fit in anywhere.

            At least I'm consistent.

Reposting this for those who didn't read the morning SAmanda posts... and don't scroll back.

                          --

                          A CALL FOR SIGNATURES!

                          Ladies and gents,

Some of you know (and some of you don't) that I'm something of a sketch artist in my er... ample spare time? (whenever I'm not making models of space ships or absent water bottles as the case may be! ).

In any case, I'm working on a little GABIT project which I'm hoping to have okay'd by the GABIT crew (I have yet to approach them because I want to see if it'll work first), whereby I'm going to professionally print a poster-sized comic-book type sketch of Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter, decked out in full SG-1 gear (similar to one you may have already seen by me). Around this sketch, I would love to have SAmandan signatures, accompanied by a small note of accolade or encouragement for Amanda - and by small, I mean 250 characters or less (not words mind you, characters).

Amanda always signs autographs for her fans, I thought it'd be super cool to give her something signed by all of US for a change. Also something she could keep and that would remind her of how much we've all loved watching her play Sam Carter for the past decade or so.

If the GABIT folks say it's okay, I thought it'd be really neat if we were able to present the poster to her with all the signatures and little messages on it, some time during GABIT itself. Then have it couriered back to her in Canada (so she doesn't have to carry it in her luggage). If it's not okay with the GABIT folks, I suppose we could always try to just send it to her somehow, but I'm really hoping they'll say yes. It's just a poster-sheet, after all.

So... how will all the fan signatures end up on the actual poster, you may ask?? Good question!

I'd want them to appear *EXACTLY* as they were written. Choose your message. Choose your pen color (mind you don't use a giant marker, I won't be able to give anyone more than about 300 pixels width so use a pen, ok?).

Sign a WHITE PIECE OF PAPER as though you were signing a group birthday card, for example. Then ... have your paper SCANNED into the computer as an image. Set the DPI at 300 - if you don't know how, you can have it done at a local copy-centre, or ask a friend!

You've only got about this much space:

Once you have your image (signature/message), save it as a (JPG - 300 DPI ) Again, if you need help, ask a friend or have your copy centre do it for you.

Then... email it to me at:
                          FanSigsForAT(at)gmail.com

Use the subject header "SIGNATURE FOR AT"

I will be filtering mail that way, so if you don't use that subject, your signature may be lost. We've got some time to do this so don't panic. Think about what you want to say (and how to say it in 250 characters or less!). Obviously I will be reading these before I put them on the poster and censoring rude, crude, personal or otherwise inappropriate comments - which won't even be an issue since this is SAmanda and who here would even think of saying something inappropriate!? My recommendation would be to keep it light and happy, you only have about 250 characters after all.

I was thinking of keeping this in the SAmanda family - a SAmandan project since this is a place I've come to view as very special since I was welcomed here a few months ago. However please also feel free to pass this on to anyone else you might feel would want to participate. Even if that's on another group. We're all friends, right?

I hope to contact the G4 about this as soon as I know whether it will work and see if it's doable. It could be really awesome if it works out well.

Thanks guys so much ... love and hugs to you all !!

I've always been a tomboy, always had a group of close friends, but I was never popular. But then, I never really wanted to be popular, possibly because I knew I never would be... My friends are and were mostly all geeks; I think I'm just a wannabe geek, and probably qualify more as a dork. But, thankfully, I've never been a lonely dork.

An ADDENDUM to the eariler post.

I should add that Julia has given the green light to go ahead with the poster presentation. We'll have a pre-paid package set up to courier the item back to Amanda from GABIT after it's presented to her(I'm more than happy to care of that monetarily, but I'll likely ask for the kind assistance of a UK SAmandan with getting the necessary paperwork done remotely before the event!), and Julia has generously offered to address it for us and send it to Amanda, afterward (so she does not have to worry about carrying it home in her luggage).

We'll also need to nominate two SAmandan GABIT reps to present the poster to Amanda, likely during the autograph session(s). I told Julia I'd pass the word along to all of the thread and since there's a few months off, we still have ample time to discuss the logistic(s).

But it looks like the poster is a go. Sweet!

Now to get those signatures scanned in and emailed, eh?!
