I completely agree. I'm all for freedom of speech, but a hate thread is an evil thing, and I'm so against the notion of those. So very against it. Even for "fictional characters", I just don't see a point. It does nothing other than propogate a place for people to be encouraged to post mean, cutting comments which are (8/10 times) not constructive, rather they're pointed and deliberately insulting. I just don't believe in hate-threads. Hate does nothing other than perpetuate more hate. Dig one small hole for it, you'll have ten by the time you turn around, and 100 by the time you look at those ten. It builds exponentially from there. What's next? Retaliation threads. "Oh, you hate Carter? Well, guess what? I hate Daniel/Vala/Teal'c... etc..." *sigh* Nothing good can come of it. Nothing nothing nothing.

But ... freedom of speech, as they say. There's no easy line to tow when you have to give the same freedom(s) to hateful folks as you do the folks who have something positive to contribute to the community. It is their "right", after all. Or none of us have any "rights" left.

No way do I envy you your position, Sky. Nooooo way, noooo how.

But that is my point exactly. If there were trued freedom of speech, we would be able to have interesting and well thought out debates on both threads. Unfortunately a few narrow minded individuals would make this impossible (and I'm sure they exist on both sides of the divide, although I'd like to think they didn't). We'd be seen as squashing their rights by voicing our opinions and creating a defence.

It's such a shame it's all come to this.
      Yepp, it's blank down here.

One day, in the far far future, when Stargate has finished forever, deepspace might get to a con. Only there won't be any cons then.

LOL. You and Jester are two of the warmest most caring people I've ever met. Never forget that.

Welll, I did (just) post on that thread, I couldn't help it. But I tried my darndest to do it without squashing anyone's points of view therein. I just disagreed so strongly about one point of view in particular. I had to say something to counter the argument.

I know the fact that there is a anti-Sam thread out there bothers some of you, but I wouldn't allow it to bring you down. We can't expect everyone to enjoy Sam the way that we do. Just look at the diversity of opinions we have here on the Samanda thread and we all adore Sam. One can't really expect that everyone would feel the same way as we do and they should be allowed to voice their opinons. I'm just happy to see that so far they haven't allowed their discontent for the character to justify an attack on the actress who portrays her.

Live and let live...is what I say. Let the anti's discuss what makes them happy and we can do the same here in Samanda. Hopefully, if Amanda does occassionally take the time to to log onto GW, she'll spend her time reading the positive comments rather than the negative ones.

There will be cons then.... look at the Farscape cons that still exist. And various Trek cons.

I know it's been awhile since we had a discussion about patches, but I was playing this afternoon and came up with a patch design. I tried to take all the previous suggestion into consideration.

That's really pretty Kat. I like that the design is slightly offcentre. It makes it different. Nice colour scheme also.
Though you know, coming from an aussie point of view, I reckon the stars should be arranged in the shape of the southern cross .
It's really good. It actually looks like a commercial design for a patch.

As bad as seeing an anti-Sam thread appear in GW remember there are other forums who are so anti I'm sure they would blame her for global warming.

There's the difference between you and some of the other Vala dislikers, some of them can't seem to seperate the character from the actor. For that I thank you. Claudia, like Amanda, is doing what's written for her. Sadly in some cases, the writing is so poor that not even the most talented of actors can make is shine.

I honestly don't go near the anti- any character threads. I've had far too much anger and sadness in my life over the years to want to go near any kind of thread like that. Debating, in a mature fashion - without name calling or draging the actor into it, is a good healthy thing, even if some here don't like it.

I'm with Sky, as much as we Samandans would love to go defend her in those kinds of threads, it really doesn't make any sense...we are not going to change any anti-Sam persons mind. Their loss, imho.
Well anyone who says anything bad about the actors because of the character they play is just mean and they must have lost their way somewhere along the line!!

I have just skimmed the last page of said thread. Some things have made my heart sink a little, some things I agree with and a couple of posts - as a feminist made me spit a little. However it is an anti thread only so I refrained from posting.

I get the feeling some posters have a problem with intelligent females who can excell in a number of fields. I feel quite sorry for them. Amanda is one such female she can act, she can direct and is incredibly quick witted - and she got a science award at school!

However the theme that Carter is too perfect and knows way too much about too many professions I agree with. I think Sky explained a way back that it is a plot device to move the story forward, so they don't have to introduce lots of different technical experts into each episode. I can understand this. However by the end of season 6 I was getting to think Carter seemed to be expert in too many fields to be credible.

It is an inspiration in some ways I guess. It is possible to have wide ranging and varied interests and be good at all of them. BUT it is probably not realistic to expect to be expert in all of them.

The writing has let Carter down big style in season 7 and 8. I would have liked the science to have taken a back seat and to see her lead the team and become more of a soldier.

The dalliance with romance wasn't well written and in my opinion not really appropriate on a sci fi programme. I want action and adventures and great threats. Little bits of personal life would have been great. I would have rather seen SG1 interacting off base though to see the characters off duty side.

I'm not really a sam and jack shipper and thought the writers overplayed this a little - in the main winding the fans up rather than moving that arc forward. It should be resolved one way or another and let carter move on from that.

I see little development for carter in season 10 as I think the main focus will be on Vala.In my opinion the character they should concentrate on the most is cameron and making him a great team leader, then concentrate on making the team great again.

I agree with another post that there has been too much emphasis on carter in the past. I love the character, but also like Daniel and Teal'c. In season 9 I was really hoping for lots of team eps - where everyone shines, everyone plays a key role and everyone gets to be funny and snarky. All the characters have played funny and snarky and they all have their own style.

I personally didn't like Sam's line about Vala - "who's the back up singer". I just thought it was a little mean considering AT/CB position and I bet Amanda cringed when she read it. Yes it is in the episode and it is Sam to Vala, but to me it didn't sit right and I think Carter would have been a little more gracious than that. So I have worries about Vala and Sam and just hope they write them as working well together or being snarky to each other in a humorous way, whilst obviously having respect for each other. (a bit like Daniel and O'Neill)

Anyway enough rambling I got my peek and don't need to go back!!
In conclusion none of the above points deter me from the opinion that Sam is a great character. I would just love to be Sam Carter!!

                          Amen Sister!!!

Anti- threads server no purpose other than to propogate negativity and contention in my view. I have neither the time nor energy for them, but a certain measure of disdain.

i obviously have no issue with the anti-season threads, i play there a lot. I have a lot of things that i don't care for in the show and feel that, by keeping my, well most of my comments in the anti threads, i'm keeping them away from the more general threads where my negativity doesn't drag them down too.

as much as i will post my opinoin about a character, i won't ever start a thread to knock one of them down.

I also reconize that you can't change peoples' minds. those that don't liek sam won't like sam no matter what we say.

we like having our thread here where the anti folks have to leave us alone. and we owe those that feel the opposite the same respect.

let them talk in peace. If the subject of the thread disturbs you, then please, give it a pass.

if you do read it and you're upset, come in here and turn that 'anger' into something positive and post something nice about sam/amanda.
