Sam Carter/Amanda Tapping Discussion/Appreciation

I'm seriously considering hitch hiking across the country for Shore Leave just to meet all of you lovely people - oh, and Amanda Tapping and Carmen Argenziano, of course.

Geez, too bad I have a paper to work on, because I could write a novel for this thread. There are so many reasons why I love and respect both Amanda and the character of Sam Carter. Though I've never gotten the opportunity to meet her, everything that I hear about Amanda has indicated that she is just a lovely, beautiful person in every way. She is kind, polite, funny, courteous, and everyone who meets her comes away feeling that they really have gotten to know HER, Amanda, and that is truly special. I hope that one day I get that privilege as well. And of course, the fact that she has brought Sam Carter to life, a character that has meant so much to me personally, is just wonderful. Carter was one of me biggest role models when I was little, and she still is -- not a perfect person by any means, but a strong, good, intelligent, real person that I can relate to and admire. Love both of these women to death, and I second this thread. Amanda deserves all of our respect and support, and I sincerely hope she knows how many fans that she has out there.

Well, for me, minigeek has hit upon the trouble I'm having with Atlantis. I'd green her if I could. And at the risk of flogging this dead horse of mine yet again, I'm going to explain.

I think we can all agree that there has been some major "borrowing" of storylines and plot ideas in Atlantis' second season. And each time I see TPTB doing Entity on Atlantis, or Sheppard's 100 Days, or in this instance, McKay's Grace, I keep expecting the same kind of character development, the same level of meaning to be attached to the telling of the story. I come into the episode with a preconceived notion as to what the depth of the story will be, with certain personal requirements that need to be met to make the recycling of yet another SG-1 script worthwhile. And Atlantis just ain't cutting it.

All of these stories, as SG-1 episodes, packed a wallop as far as the characters go. They weren't just about moving the story from point A to point B, not just about filling up 42 minutes of screentime. They were about the changes that the characters had to go through to get there as well. Entity was about the right course of action, about whether or not to take the chance to communicate with the entity. It wasn't about Sam dying, it was about how the others, particularly Jack, felt about Sam dying. It was about O'neill having to shoot Sam himself. But Intruder was just about getting rid of the virus. End of story. Grace results in some serious personal introspections for Sam, an experience from which she emerges changed. Grace Under Pressure falls woefully short on that kind of meaning for Rodney.

Perhaps I'm being unfair in holding the Atlantis episodes individually, and Atlantis as a series, to SG-1's standard. But for me that extra level of meaning, of depth, and of character perspective is what set SG-1 apart from other shows. It's what makes SG-1 really special.

It seems that the banter is what made this episode for a lot of people, and it seems to me that a lot of the time it is the banter in each episode between whichever characters that stands out for many Atlantis fans. But it is that same reliance on banter to carry an episode off that holds the show back for me. That need to come up with the "funny" or "witty" line, to have the characters always appear clever and invulnerable stops real, lasting character development from ever taking place. It's what makes all of the character actions in each episode superficial rather than meaningful.

Either way, this seems to be a personal problem rather than a common one. Most people seem to be perfectly OK with getting (in my view) less out of Atlantis than they were accostomed to getting out of SG-1. The shows seem to be held to different standards of excellence. And I can't figure why that is.

I think you'll find it's the complete lack of Benson & Stabler interaction that's caused the lack of interest from the awards this year. Mariska was right when she said Chris is her other half. I know I'm tired of the one or the other policy they seem to have going..... ** looks insanely forward to the B&S in a car for the whole ep.. ep** and just to bring it slightly on topic.. that concept sounds a helluva lot like Grace to me

Amanda is a real trooper. It's interesting to note her costume changes through her pregnancy. Its funny how directors work around pregnant actresses. For example, Roxanne Dawson (voy) worked through her pregnancy (wearing loose clothes and hiding behind consoles) yet when B'Elanna was pregnant, it was a fake belly. The same with Elaine in Seinfeld, you'll note she spent a lot of time hiding behind Jerry's kitchen countertop.

SGC has been turned into a baby creche with Amanda's bub Olivia and Michael and Lexa's kids. ^_^

I'll bite on the lack of B&S interaction. That was just insane. What was Wolf thinkng? Must say I'm a fan of these two actors being two halves of a whole. It's a shame NBC/Wolf were so gung-ho about this season's development. Ah well... Good for fanfic fodder, I suppose...

Amanda on SVU woudl work extremely well.. detective, ADA, ADA/Detective who's also a perp... she'd really kick ass... as would Rick.. Hi All! *Waves*
Finally finished my exams yesterday and today I had my last day at work for this year. Am leaving with Hubby for our Peru trip on Friday, so now I am busy getting ready for that. Which means that I will miss our big BD party , but I trust, you all will have a great time.

MajorSal, thank you so much for starting this thread, I really enjoy coming here and spending time with you all, and I've met the greatest people!

with two of next year's cons having been announced, and amanda attending them, let's start a little head count and see if we can organize a little samanda get togther at each of them

in july we have Shore Leave in Maryland, usa

in november we have AT2 in london ( i guess)

so, who is going to each one?

I am definitely going to the Shore Leave con in July and I would love to go to AT2, since I had already planned to go to the first one, which didn't work out. Just have to convince hubby that it's a good idea and not that expensive.
So definitely Shore Leave, most likely AT2.
