Very interesting discussion on religion. I'm in the camp that says Sam probably believes there may be a higher power out there, but is not a practicing member of any denomination. Having seen so much, she probably questions theological dogma of any stripe. On the other hand she may believe that given the complexity of the universe, it may not have been accidental. But I doubt she gives it much thought. She wants to explain things. I would also agree with those that said she stopped going to church sometime after her mom died. She probably grew sick of platitudes from well meaning friends of the family.

      What happened???

Did your bike lose a few spokes or something that you'd have to resort to REAL horse power???

See I thought that we were a more up-to-date kingdom, where our police patrolled on bikes...like on Pacific Blue...

that's a lot of pressure to be on a person. 'you'll think of something'

sam did touch on that in redemption. and i do think it's something that's a part of her character. tht constant stress of peopel expecting her to know all the answers
Excellent point. Is Redemption the episode where she says she can't work upstairs with the rest of the scientists because "they all keep looking at me for the answer" ?
I liked in the episode where Jack gets impaled by the alien device that Carter had to run through various solutions before she got to the right one.
I like that she's brilliant, but I also like to see her not get the answer instantly.

I've converted my sister to SG1, but she wants to see them in order --so this weekend we watched some more episodes (we're up to Season 3) and we watched "Learning Curve." I loved seeing Sam confused by the naquadah generator. "Wait a minute, when did we talk about that?" Of course, in the end she figures out how to make an earth version, but it took some effort. Also the real joy she takes in figuring out a problem. Carter probably thinks:Wouldn't it be nice to get to figure out a problem without someone's life or the fate of the galaxy depending on it?

I'm not going to make big sentences , but I can't see Sam as a very religious person. I'm not saying she doesn't believe in a higher being, but I think, if she does, it's not something she's going to bring everytime SG1 encounters supernatural phenomenons. But there's this part in Revelations when she's in Daniel's lab and Hammond comes in:

SAM: So what are we supposed to do? Keep working like nothing happened?

HAMMOND: I understand how you feel.

SAM: With all due respect Sir, I don't even understand how I feel. We didn't even have a memorial service.

HAMMOND: We're not even really sure that he's dead.

SAM: And that's the problem. What are we supposed to do, Sir? Wait and.. and hope that he comes back or.. just move on.

How should we understand Sam's need for a memorial service ? Does she want to say good bye to a friend, or does she want it as the clear sign for the beginning of life after life ? Does she see it as a ritual or as something deeply needed to be in peace ? Sam struggles with the loss of Daniel. She doesn't know what to think. Sam's religion was science from the beginning. She always had a scientific explanation. Here, she can't bring science, there's nothing in the "laws of physics" to explain Daniel's ascension. She tries to turn to religion, she said "hope", but clearly, she's not comfortable with the notion, like if it was something long forgotten, something from her childhood.
I can't picture Sam as a very religious person. She was clearly the one the most distressed by Daniel's ascension on the team, and in my opinion it's because she didn't believe in another way of existence for him. He was lost for good.

          Just my 2 cents.
I don't have the exact quote, but Sam also makes a kind of snarky remark to Teal'c about Daniel's wake in Fire and Water. Something along the lines of "giving the deceased a big send off into the afterlife..." but said in such a way that she really didn't believe in it.

          Spoiler:
On the other hand, by the time Threads and Revelations rolled around, Sam seemed a lot more at peace with A) her father's death, and B) the fact that Daniel might show up again at any point.

Plus, if I had just witnessed the base's autodestruct sequence shut down mere seconds before going off without any rational, scientific explanation, I know I would be more inclined to give credence to the possible existence of a higher power...

Actually I got my ideas from looking through a website featuring the flags of the world. The British colonies tend to feature the heraldic devices, and since we're supposed to be a kingdom I thought it might be appropriate to steal the design.

Love the picture of the Bayeux tapestry. The first shield I learned to fight with was a kite shield just like those. Ah, brings a smile to my face...

In regards to Sam's religion, you guys make some valid points. After all that they've seen, it's hard to imagine them believing in God.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet or not (too many replies to count! ), but there's that scene in "Threshold," with Sam and Teal'c - which, by the way, helped in cementing their friendship, in my mind - where Teal'c is begging Sam to help him, along with Janet.

Teal'c: Do you believe in a God, MajorCarter?

              Sam: This isn't about me.

Teal'c: How would it be if you were punished for loving your God as I love mine?

              Sam: It's not the same.

It seems to me that the writers were either being purposely ambiguous, or that Sam really did/does believe in God, and realized that admitting so would totally blow their argument with Teal'c away. I suppose that if she definitely didn't believe in God, or was doubtful of the existence of one, she could've said so and Teal'c wouldn't have been able to counter her like he did.

On another note, who's ready for the All-Day Marathon this week? I'm excited, and I'm actually glad that Convenant is being re-aired. I didn't fully appreciate it the first time it aired, but it showed Sam in "Pilot Mode" and I kinda liked the idea that they chose Sam as the sort of "Poster Child/Woman/Officer" for the Air Force/SGC, by having her interviewed in a live broadcast on national television. Plus, they wrote her in such a way that she was definitely much more composed than she was in, say, "Heroes."

Needless to say, my (parents') Tivo will be working overtime.

Finally, the forum is back up and running!

Here’s the picture accompanying the TV Guide story about SciFi’s Friday night lineup-

From the article, a quote by AT – “There’s a whole new energy to the show. Still, it felt a little naked without Rick.”

There’s also an interesting view from Robert Cooper about introducing Cam to the show: “To avoid the cliché of ‘We don’t like the new guy, ‘ they introduce Cameron as the pilot who once saved SG-1 on an Antarctic mission. He’s warmly welcomed by the team, and the hope is that fans will follow suit.”

And some interesting mini-bios on the new characters –

                Spoilers

Note the reference to the friendship between Sam and the new doc. (and unfortunately, yet another reference to Cam as the new team leader )

funerals and memorial serivces can be very...ironic places. a real life example. my grandmother loved to stir things up. she would literally call one kid, then another and play one side against the other to stir up a tussle...that she could then solve.

it wasn't that she was mean, she just needed to feel needed, and if stirring up a fight would do that, that's what she'd do.

we realized it, saw it and more than once, took her to task, in front of and behind her back.

she died of lou gerig's disease and immediately upon her death...she could do no wrong. she was perfect.

no one would question her or criticize her and took 'speak no ill of the dead' to heart

i'm not saying what they did was wrong, in fact, it's quite natural.

however, as an observer, it did strike me. i saw folks that, on thursday, were grousing about her, all of a sudden calling her an angel

i don't hold it against any of them...but the rapid 180 turnaround did strike a chord with me

if you go to enough memorial services, they're all the same.

My TV Guide arrived in the mail today. Unfortunately I did not get the Sam cover--I got the combo one with BB representing SG1. In the article, AT is as gracious as ever, mentioning RDA. And I was pleased to see AT seemed to be the representative for SG1 in the interview. I skimmed over the mini-bios--trying to avoid spoilers, but as mentioned by NC above:
                    Spoiler:
the new doc "befriends" Sam. Here's hoping that means she really will not be Dr. Rommie as we have feared. Maybe Sam will have a quiet talk with her about "less cleavage on base"

That's the one that I got as well. I wonder if that's what all the subscribers got. I adored Amanda's quote about Rick. It's nice to know that at least someone there misses him!

True, you are expected to act a certain way. On a slightly different note, when my grandmother died several years back, in the "down time" during the wake, away from the main group, my family actually did spend some time kind of joking around about some "inside" things--talking about her quirks-- & I think people thought we were not grieving appropriately. It's not that we weren't mourning, but we wanted to think of the happy things too.

I'll keep checking til I get the one with Amanda. Really don't like seeing her on the cover with BB-kinda a sinking feeling-a little sick to my stomach!

grief is different for a lot of people.

personally? i don't want a funeral. buy a keg, grill some burgers and play some calypso music
