Hi all! I'm so happy I found this thread. I am a major Sam/Jack shipper, but an even bigger Sam fan. I think Sam is a wonderful role model for girls everywhere and Amanda seems such a delight. I went to the Vancouver Con in April hoping that just maybe we might get to see Amanda. I'm definitely going next year for the same reason. I really, really would love to meet her.

I've read some of the fanfic and they're great and the vids, too. I know I'm going to love it here.

That's what I mean by taking charge. And that's what we all want so much to see more of ... once Carter returns for S9. Less looks of angst and uncertainty and more "I can do it and do it well!" I'm with you there. Foothold may be my favorite Carter-centric episode, partly for the reasons you cite. One nice—not overplayed—detail is when Not!Daniel hands Carter a (presumably spiked) drink on the plane & she wisely sets it aside. In the Curious Phenomena Dept., she shoots Not!Jack once but two bullet holes miraculously appear. That's some gun Maybourne has!
I too want to see more of the cagey, competent Carter of Foothold and Tangent, less of the hand-wringing "Oh, I'm so insecure & conflicted" imposter of S7/8. Sam needs to put her 'game face' back on.

Read an article on Terly Rothery from Starlog #310 May 2003 tonight.

Here are a couple of interesting quotes from the article

Originally, producers Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner – who knew Rothery from their collaboration on The Outer Limits revival – looked at her for the part of the soldier scientist Carter, but in the end, “It wasn’t right,” Rothery admits. “I’m so not the Carter character. The casting was absolutely bang-on with Amanda instead.”

Over the years, Fraiser and Carter have grown to be good friends, and their relationship has become so important that when Carter was promoted to major, the producers realized that they would have to do the same for Fraiser. “If she’s a major and I’m a captain. I can’t address her by her first name.” Rothery explains, “I would have to address her as ‘Major.’ We want to show the camaraderie and connection between these two women, so [the promotion] was done off-camera. I became a major at the same time in order to maintain that familiarity, so they can still talk back and forth as friends.”

Love the Samantha/Sam Carter character to the molecules. Even with the spots of laxity by the writers or PTB at times, Carter has remained a strong and appealing persona. She's missed already and s9 hasn't even aired.

I give her a lot of kudos. She travels through the known and unknown with three of the most virile men in the universe but doesn't lose herself among them. Well she did fall for the alpha male, that'd be Jack. And he of course returned those feelings for the female who was more than his match.

                        Best of's on my List:
                        - Emancipation (ok, kind of corny but she was def in hand-to-hand!)
                        - Solitudes: she took on that ice! And her tech determination didn't quit.
                        - Grace
                        - Space Race
                        - Icon (her mission, her success)
                        - Gemini: AT worked that dual role!

                        Just naming a few.

Anyway, Amanda Tapping has pulled off a real honors-worthy performance and I for one will be squatting in my most comfortable chair when s9 begins this summer!

"Geez, blow up one sun and everyone expects you to walk on water."

                        GREAT THREAD, thanks!
                        welcome!

you've found THE home of love and support for sam and amanda. bask in the glow, and newbies have to buy the vice president (ME) a margarita.

I didn't realize they were orignally considering TR for the role of Carter... Nothing against TR of course, shes a wonderful actor, but shes just too, well short

the new one would start over at page 1 of course, then when we get to 400 on it i'm pretty sure i can merge it with the archived version of this one, so the page count would tally up, it'd just do it in a bunch rather than a little at a time

i'll do whatever the majority wants, but you do need to decide soon. i figure we'll hit page 400 monday or tuesday
                            my vote: yes.

                            it's whatever everyone wants, though.

That's what I thought when I read the article. I didn't realize either that they were looking at Teryl for the role of Sam. It's hard to even picture her playing part.

I do miss Teryl on Stargate and would love to see either an AU episode with her it in the near future.

                                Hi Sky et al

Astro is away for weekend but should be back on thread soon ... I know she's busy using the thread for her project. Will taking it offline interfere with her ability to search for certain posts for the Samanda scrapbook? I actually have to find a couple more posts myself but not tonight. I don't want to jeopardize that.

Now, one of the successes of SaGC was keeping Sam Carter as a positive and high profile on the main forum page/listing whatever. It's neat to look there and see so many hits (rivaling some of the, ahem, other popular threads) ... and I know Astro (and I) feel good about that.

Why haven't some of the other larger threads been recycled and started over?

If we do this, will we still see that there has been almost 8000 posts? I think the number of posts sends a positive message to the general fandom: we're here and we're here to stay and Sam's a great character! So, if you could guarantee that a) we can easily access the back/archived thread and b) our full number of previous posts would still show in the main window, then I guess I'd be open to switching gears.

Still confused by the need to do this when other threads haven't ... can you explain a little more please?

PS Welcome Traveler ... great post ... please stay with us either here or in our AU which may happen this week!
I'd vote to just leave the thread as is... enthusiastic new Sam-fans seem to be finding us and joining in. I think that Sam-fans like seeing such a Sam-friendly thread with such great depth.
