whether or not I'd like Sam to have successful gene therapy. I can think of good aspects for stories either with it working or not but I really want Sam to be able to fly a puddle jumper

...From a List of Cool Things Carter Can Do perspective, I'd love it. But, realistically, the problem so many people have with Carter is that she's perfect. Having this overt "genetic imperfection" kinda lends more credence to the fact that she's just your average, every day superhuman, complete with flaws and all.

oh i totally agree
Spoiler:
i don't think its bad. i don't think sam should have the ancient gene. i think that would be too easy. i'm glad they didn't decide to give anyone and everyone the ability.
i had always assumed that sam, daniel, teal'c and all just didn't want to get the procedure done. i never thought that they would have tried it and had it fail, just because i assumed they would have mentioned it or shown it. which is why i'm thinking now that they're just making up reasons why now, when its been asked.
i do wonder will they address it on the show though. i doubt it though. not too bothered either way though.

And this way, she would have to rely on and defer McKay or Sheppard to take care of business when in a puddle jumper. If she's in a bind and McKay and/or Sheppard aren't around, she's screwed.
I always figured that the only people who needed to take the gene therapy were those who were assigned to Atlantis. But I suppose it would make sense if everyone at least tried it, no matter where they were stationed.
I do agree with you when you say it's possible that Mallozzi and Co. just kinda made that answer up as they went along. If it doesn't come up in Atlantis, I'll be mildly surprised only because I would expect them to fly puddlejumpers several times throughout the course of the season.

Ah well.
