      Hi everyone,

Just a fly-by post before I head off to bed..
I just read Joe Mallozzi's interview and needless to say like so many other "Gatters" I'm VERY ANGRY by his passing comments about us fans not having input on creative decisions, while this is true to a large extent "we" have as some people have already pointed out swayed the decisions of TPTB in the past, I don't think any of us would expect every wish we have/had for SG to end up on the screen in-fact IMO only sometimes it makes a better show when we don't always get what we want at least right away anyway, I had always hoped that by constructively criticizing certain aspects of the show was helping TPTB, but Joe Mallozzi obviously feels very differently, this is his personal opinion and he's very much entitled to that, he was doing that interview in his professional capacity and should have thought though more carefully his reply's and how they would be perceived by us the fans, I took most of his interview as hurtful and actually quite disrespectful.
I think Mr Mallozzi needs think more about how to not alienate the very people his business needs to survive, after all "we" actually do have the ultimate control of the business he works in because "we" do have the OFF button then when there no job for Joe Mallozzi to go to he wont need to worry about creative decisions or us fans any more because there wont be any.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just so angry and hurt

and on a rather random note: does anyone remember the episode in which we see Sam working out on the (base?) gym? i think Daniel's in the scene, and maybe Teal'c. i can almost see it but i don't remember the ep.

Hopefully they'll release a DVD...

                Oh yes! And Myrth!

Last I heard, there would be no recordings - something about copyright issues for the play. Sadly.

So don't record the play; record the girls dropping in the aisle in joyous monologue squee.

You'll still make AD very happy.

So where does the first seed of an idea come from? Sometimes it's from a creative partner like Martin. Sometimes a concept will come to me as I'm tucking into something delicious my wife whipped up for for dinner. Sometimes I have a dream (that's what inspired two of my personal fav Stargate SG-1 episodes, "Grace" and "Icon"). Walking the dog, having a shower, working out, driving - all are excellent places for inspiration to strike.

Sam’s first command flew right by me, I thought it was later.

I liked how Jack encouraged her and totally believed in her.

Her missions were to get SG11 back and negotiate a treaty for the metal. Hammond also reminded her to be diplomatic.

Carter prioritized finding SG11 until they were rescued, then began metal mining negotiations with the elders. She accidentally brought back aliens rather than SG11, but by doing that, indirectly returned SG11 home.

She displayed diplomacy on many occasions – “went with” the cultural spiritual references even though it was against her science and logic, offered to be called Sam rather than her complete title, spoke with the wolf, respected the planet inhabitants enough to go against Hammonds’s plan to steal the metal and lie to the planets’ people. Tried to come up with a less destructive mining method to satisfy the village elders.

SG1 returned home safely, SG11 was ultimately safe, but the mining deal fell through (mostly due to immoral leadership).

I think she did a great job for first command. Not perfect, but good – hehe not that I could necessarily have done any better.

In regards to Sam's first command, I stick by what I said earlier. Except I'd forgotten she also manages to bring the Indian representative back to discuss ways Earth might get access to the minerals. Overall, I think she shows amazing insight and skill for a Junior Officer in her first command. In fact, everytime I watch it I can't help wonder if maybe Jack got 'hurt' because, quite frankly, the writers couldn't figure out a way for him to be there without the tribal chiefs and the spirits getting so peev'd off they never let themselves or their rep get anywhere NEAR Earth.

Sam handles the negotiations and the cultural differences excellently, managing to show respect without patronization better than I think even Daniel does.

                              So, yeah, she done good

EDIT: She also dresses down the other (I think he's an officer) very well in the presence of outsiders. She shows just enough dissaproval to win the Indian's respect without alienating the other officer and his team.

                              Sam's First Command...

I think the general concensus is that she did a good job and I would agree. She executes the mission objectives: finds SG11, makes up with the natives and manages to convince them to consider a mining treaty with the agreement of Tonane to return to Earth. Hence O'Neill's comment to her on her return of 'good job' too.

Still, I don't see that Sam would see that she did a good job. I think Sam would tend to brood on it and think she had ultimately failed by allowing aliens to return to the SGC and almost destroy them. That perceived mistake - letting aliens masquerading as SG11 back through the gate is one she is unable to prevent because they have no knowledge that anyone but the Salish exist on the planet. Further, it's likely X'els and the other spirits only assumed the place of SG11 once they knew Tonane was going to Earth as X'els is shown in his raven form watching the meeting with the elders.

Should Sam have considered the possibility that the spirits were real and alien? Possibly - given the Goa'uld are masquerading as Egyptian Gods and the Norse Gods turned out to the Asgard there is a precedent. Not to mention the very strange 'disappearance' and return of SG11. But then neither of her team-mates considers the possibility either including the anthropologist/mythology expert Daniel nor Teal'c who is more likely to be looking for potential threats. If it is a failing, it's a collective failing although Sam is accountable as the team lead.

So, IMO, I think she did an OK job and on the face of it achieved her mission objectives. But she and her team failed to look outside of the box and consider the possibility that the spirits were real entities, ultimately leading to the mistake of allowing them to gain access to the SGC.

MS' girlfriend/wife was due to go into labor soon after, which is why daniel was written out of Matter of Time...to give michael time off to be with his new daughter

It's funny. As I wrote my response I knew that Sam being Sam there had to be something about the mission she'd done less than perfectly that would allow her to worry about her 'failure;.

Excellent explanation of what Sam might have thought about the mission, but I personally don't think she really should have suspected the team were aliens and I doubt anyone but Sam would have considered it a failure on her part not to have done so. I also think even if she had been suspicious, she would have been hesitant to report such a far-flung hypothesis to Hammond for fear of looking overly cautious and even a tad foolish during her first command. And, even if she had reported those suspicions to Hammond, I suspect she would have been ordered to proceed. After all, what were the odds of something being 'up' compared to the value of successfully obtaining mining rights? I think it would have been considered an acceptable risk.

So, while Sam herself might consider her first command problematic, I doubt that's what it says anywhere on her record or in any reports.
