I like Sam, but not to the point that a character on SGA is now being reduced to recurring status, and the only logical reason is to make room for Sam

While I understand your and other SGA fans pov's, at this point in time, this kind of response is purely speculative. There is absolutely no proof that Torri's role has been reduced to recurring status in order to make room for Amanda. Whose to say that this decision wasn't made way before SG-1 was even cancelled?

Personally, I'm not excited to hear that Sam will be on SGA largely because I'm not a big fan of SGA. I'm sure it's a good show, but it just never grabbed my attention like SG-1 did and I was actually looking forward to saying good-bye to the Sci-Fi channel. However, I'm a huge fan of Amanda's and where she goes-- so go I -- even if that means fourteen episodes of SGA.

My only fear is that if by some strange chance SGA suddenly drops in the ratings - due to Sci-Fi's idiotic decision to push the second half of the season to April and TPTB's decision to stir up the pot like they did with SG-1 -- that fans will use this as an excuse to blame Amanda & Sam for the show's demise.

I'm still crossing my fingers that things work out with Amanda's other project and what role she does have on SGA will not jeapordize any other future projects. Personally, I'm kind of hoping as much as DH seems to enjoy working with Amanda that she has a chance to guest star on his new show.

Wow, I was so busy all day and I come back to the news that we aren't losing Sam Carter at the end of season 10. This is great! Sam is Stargate IMO (thanks to the talent of Amanda), so I'm excited. I hope that she is

commanding that ship. I hate that Tori is going to recurring status, but I'm glad she isn't leaving completely. I am very optimistic that TPTB will give Sam much better stuff on SGA than she got in season 9 of SG1. It sounds like they are finally figuring out that more Amanda means more ratings. I'm also glad RDA might still be in the movies. Nonshippers do not look!

I feel the same way you do - encouraged.

Encouraged because Amanda's excellent work, positive attitude, and ability to get along with everyone she works with is mentioned and seems to be rewarded!

I was getting a little discouraged in seasons 9 and 10 (thus far), thinking Sam was being pushed into the background, then Amanda didn't get to direct, and I thought; "Sheesh, you do a great job, and whadya get?"

Now, I feel a little better about TPTB's loyalty to a great actress.

That being said, I still feel bad about too many cast changes - I feel bad for the cast members, but also do not think too much change too fast is the best thing.

I wanted to say that I agree with you both!

I didn't like how tptb treated AT in s9 and s10... so I can understand the Atlantis faithful who are worried/ concerned about the latest news and the characters that they support. I don't want to see any character deminished it's no fun! That being said I really hope they give AT a good part and interact with all the characters not just McKAy. I'll be watching Atlantis much more now...

I also worry about the amount that Amanda has on her plate... two movies which I hope she plays a significant part of the team on SG-1! 14 episodes on Atlantis, and her new project (being the E.P.) which we should hear more about soon! Looking froward to hearing more...

I don't think Sam is taking anyone's place.

Sam and Weir are not going to be co-leaders of Atlantis. So I don't see that this move is to make room for Sam... I see it as less scenes on the atlantis base, which is the only time we see Weir.

I think it means there will be more off-world (or away from the Atlantis base) episodes. you know like the early days of SG-1.

Yeah, we had a lot of Hammond at first then he was on screen less and less as the series progressed. Of course, I didn't like that much and I like losing Tori's full time presence even less, but I don't think it has anything to do with Amanda's arrival. If Sam were coming to take over the Atlantis expedition then I'd understand, but she is coming by ship (hopefully one she now commands) and she won't be around full time.

What if they were already planning on moving Torri to recurring? What if it's not related at all? Or if it is, it's an important and vital change for the SGA story to make?

See...that's the danger in speculating. We just don't know yet. As an avid Atlantis fan AND a diehard Carter fan, I'll wait and see how they do it. Maybe it makes sense plotwise while remaining respectful to the essence of SGA.

The way that interview read to me-"And we'll be getting Tori back for some of the season" sounded like there was a point they weren't sure they'd have her at all. Now that could be because TH hadn't wanted to stay, or the network had made a demand, or anything.

Doubt we'll know. But it certainly sounded like he was glad to be getting some Tori at all.

And we don't know, also, what they mean by recurring. I was at a Con once, talking to Andy Hallet (He played Lorne on Angel. A really delightful guy.) His character was recurring for much of the series-apparantly, on Angel at least, there was a set number of episodes you were in to get your mug in the credits, and below that you were 'recurring'. And it was a pretty high number-somewhere between 14 and 16, I can't remember exactly, that still remained 'recurring'. So...

If Carter's getting her own ship, I'd like to see her promoted to full bird - they can go ahead and canonize that in any Stargate incarnation they want. Please and thank you.

In all seriousness, having Carter promoted and given her own command ( be it a ship, regardless ) would really be a "full circle" sort of step for her character within Stargate. Given she started out the young, eager, Captain under the surly, jaded Colonel - for her character to fill the role of a Colonel would really be good for that arc. Dare I say - formulaic, even?

DH: (Talking about “Grace Under Pressure”) You have a lot of lines, then it’s block shoot in a single location. So you would have days were they we would go anywhere from 8-12 pages of straight on McKay dialogue. Then what is much more pleasant McKay and Amanda, Samantha I should say probably. I say Amanda, because that is when it gets much more pleasant when it is just me and Amanda soaking wet in a swimming pool. It’s a dream many people have had, I got to live it.

Interviewer: And you don’t get to lose her either. How do you feel about the fact that your lovely love is going to be coming over to your show.

DH: I’m love it. Any show that Amanda is on is her show as far as I’m concerned. Like she is just, there is a great description that Michael Beech said when he joined the show, he met my girlfriend and he said there is something about her, there is a light about Jane and I would apply the exactly some thing about Amanda as well. She is one of those people that just, there is just something about her, about her personality, about the way she deals with people that goes beyond, it makes her, she is beautiful anyways but there is just that extra kind of a glow about Amanda that very few actors have that ability to bring that real life personality into a character and she has done that. She has done that with Samantha. I’m convinced that while the show is a fantastic premise, the fantastic SciFi going on Amanda has just this fantastically intricate character which has just so nicely interwoven with who she is, you know you get this sense of good and true mortal compass, you know this whole kind of sort of perfect person. So yeah I think the point is I’m really not looking forward to her joining the show at all. Because frankly I can’t have that kind of competition. (All said with a smile – you so can tell he is really excited to be working with Amanda)

DH: For S4 I haven’t a clue, I’ve been on holiday. So is that right S4 we have not done S4 yet. Nobody tells us anything. Amanda would be a big thing, the thing that I have heard about S4 which I’m obviously excited about is Amanda being onboard. Um we’ve got Michael Beech has joined us I don’t know how long that will be for, I don’t know what the nature of that deal is.
