of COURSE she got emotional. her best friend had just been killed. and she nearly lost another one (i'm betting when they brought jack back, at first they didn't know how badly he was hurt)

heck, take a look at sam's outburst to bregman. i'm betting that there's a very emotional ticked off sam scene that we didn't get to see. when she lost it with bregman she was being escorted out. she had lost it enough that she was forcefully removed. and i sincerely doubt it was because of jack. I think that was when she learned that janet was dead and that they couldn't fix her

people can see what they want to see, but sam had just lost her friend of 7 years, and it was made worse by that friend being the one that sam probably never even considered would be injured much less killed.

I too became OK with S/J ship because of fanfic - and not because of the actual episodes. I wasn't that 'intense' when I watched the episodes, so I didn't see most of what S/J shippers saw... The scenes with the Zatarc detector surprised me (although I didn't have a reaction like the anti-shippers apparently do/did) - and then they showed more of the scenes in Divide and Conquer. Nothing against shippers - I just wasn't looking for it, I was just enjoying the scifi and the great female hero character of Sam Carter.

When I finished watching the Season 6 DVDs (and had to wait for 10 months for the Season 7 DVDs to be released), I discovered the world of online fanfic. First, I searched on 'Sam Carter' and 'Stargate Sam' fanfic. I eventually found Gateworld's fanfic and Heliopolis and then Fanfiction.net and The Stargate Novel Archive. With every fanfic archive that I found, I scoured the lists for good Sam fic and voraciously read them all - and I skipped all fics that put Sam in a relationship (and that was way before I knew what 'ship' meant). The problem was, as Skydiver has noted, that I ran out of solid Samfics too soon (I have to admit to being a fast reader who loves books that run over 600 or 700 pages).

When I ran out of 'gen Sam-fics', I floundered a bit... searched wide and far for new Stargate archives... but eventually, 'my need to read' outstripped my original 'fic restrictions' and I started reading some of the other fics... I like a few of the team-gen fics, but find that most of them are actually Jack or Daniel fics and Sam's role is so minor that I'm not interested. Over time, I found that a lot of J/S shipfics actually had great Sam roles - she was heroic, got whumped (sometimes amazingly), and yet held strong and survived... So I took to 'pre-skimming' fics... sampling how they handled the fic - and I always check the ending - I like the heroes to get whumped and perservere through it all, but I can't handle having them die and stay dead. They can die... but not stay dead! (only in scifi, lol!)

Over time, I read enough good solid S/J fics that I am OK with S/J in fanfics (as long as it's written so that Sam is Jack's equal in terms of heroism and such - and not if she's just the damsel in distress and he's the big he-man hero). I've even written some S/J fic... (and even one that was so saccharine fluffy that it makes my teeth hurt ). That said, I don’t like *every* S/J fanfic… if they portray Sam as less than I perceive her to be… or if it’s really a Jackfic with Sam as his relationship.

Overall, I have to agree with Skydiver when it comes to the other Sam-ships, I just haven't seen them treat Sam's character the way that I want to see it (that's a broad generalization and I am sure that there are spectacular exceptions). --and I hope that I'm not hurting anyone's feelings if they are a S/D shipper or Sam/Janet or such... with the S/D fanfics, I've found mostly what Sky already noted - Daniel is usually written as the altruistic self-sacrificing hero and Sam turns into 'the girl'... those fics are just too out of character for what I’m looking for when I want to read Samfic. Again, I am sure that there are exceptions to what I’ve generally found.

In the end… I do realize that the fanfic that I have read has colored my perceptions of the characters. In fanfic we can get so much more in terms of backstory and feelings and explanations and… well, simply put, there isn’t a 42-minute time limit! In fanfic, we can have great Sam-Cassie scenes and stories, we can have great fics where Daniel *does* visit Sam while he’s ascended… and all those ideas and episode tags that Sky is always referring to.

At any rate, I'd sure appreciate any great Samfic recommendations that anyone has! Strix's were fantastic

It's one thing to know intellectually that every time someone goes through the gate, there's a risk of not returning. I'm sure Sam and the others kind of make a mental peace about it when they go on missions. Or perhaps even, because they've been so fortunate, she and the others started to take for granted that they'll always find a way to get out of whatever they'll get into because they're just that good and have managed to do so in the past.

And then you have what happened on P3X-666. Two people Sam cared about were hurt...and for one of them, the wounds were fatal. How serious were Jack's injuries? She maybe didn't even know how bad they were. All she knew was he took a staff blast to the chest. So yeah - my sense was of course she was scared for him.

But primarily, I believe she already knew Janet was dead and she was stunned by the suddeness and by the finality of really losing her best friend without any warning. There was nothing that could be done; Sam and the others couldn't come to the rescue and save her. And to have this happen to Janet of all people, who was only their to help the injured, not to fight.

Sam of course was angry and sad and stunned because of Janet's death, terrified for Jack and aggitated by that stupid camera in her face...maybe she felt a little guilt because she hadn't figured out that transmitter in time and wasn't able to do anything to help Janet.

So to know the risks in your mind is one thing...but to have those fears realized so unexpectedly with someone you care about...

yeah. it's always one of those 'eh, right, like that will happen' things

then all of a sudden you're standing there, and you're staring at the face of a friend, and there's a bloody gaping hole in her chest and her eyes are staring blindly up at the ceiling and it just hits you, whack upside the head that it's real. it's not a dream. it's not a nightmare. it happened and it can't be changed

there's this helpless shocked feeling and there's nothing you can do about it

with jack and daniel and teal'c, she'd already seen them die more than once. with each of them, she'd already made her mental goodbyes at some point in time. they've buried daniel twice, she's lost jack twice, almost lost teal'c

but janet was supposed to always be safe. she wasn't even in the thick of the battle, but back, behind the lines.

I've really been torn about Heroes.

IMHO, it was truly one of the best episodes ever. The scene between Sam and Hammond was just brilliant (and makes me miss Don Davis even more).

And the truth is there is loss, especially in war. So from that standpoint, I get what they did. On the other hand, I really miss Janet. She was such a fantastic, well-written and well-played character. I miss the friendship she and Sam shared.

But I finally went over to that Save Janet website and signed the petition for them to bring back Teryl in some capacity. Her absence truly is leaving a gaping hole in the landscape of the show...

What I've been pondering is this...would her return (in any capacity) somehow lessen Heroes?

And I have to wonder how Sam would respond seeing her again...(My story...ECLIPSE...spoilers)
                Spoiler:
which is why I really wanted to write a scene or two of them interacting again

I have absolutely nothing to post today. Even after reading everyone's interesting posts, my mind is blank for anything to add. So why am I bothering? I don't know.

Ok, maybe I'll ask something that I've been wanting to ask for a while. If I were to activate PM's, I need to know if messages you recieve load onto your computer, like emails, or onto a gateworld page like rep comments. If they load onto your computer straight, that makes things hard if you are on another computer to your own, like say a library computer.

Sorry, I'm in a pretty lazy mood today.

affinity was actually two stories, neither of which were done well to me. with sam's, you have the shippers crying their eyes out that sam accepted a proposal from someone that wasn't jack, then you have the sam fans crying foul that sam, after accepting the proposal, would literally make out with the guy ON THE JOB.

tea'c's end of it wasn't done much better. he wants to move out, and for some reason, the sgc sets him up in the ghetto or something. then he ends up bedding a too-young female neighbor, and the fans are left wondering what's up with his relay with ishta. and instead of helping teal'c move to a part of the city that he could much easier blend in (and not want to play super hero), they move him back to the base.

so sam and teal'c fretted on certain aspects in their lives, but both gave in and settled. sam's was settled, though, later on, but teal'c's... even with sam's engagement, i think teal'c lost out even more. the stories seem to bring up subjects, and then not really explore them the way they should.

                    k, done with rant.

My interpretation as well. They had her six...they knew that Bregman was about and wanted to make sure she didn't have to deal with him for any longer than she was forced to...

i did a story once (in my head) where an alternate janet came through the mirror. sam was so happy to see her, even though she knew she wasn't 'her' janet. but sam felt this was a chance to say goodbye to janet properly, and what ruined it for her was that this janet was different. not bad, not evil, just not the best friend that she wanted to say goodbye too. this janet wasn't best friends with sam, and hadn't taken in cassie. and when sam suggested alt janet meeting cassie (so cass could say goodbye too), janet didn't want to. all in all, it was a very bitter/sweet experience for sam, because she really didn't get the chance to say goodbye to her best friend, even if it was through an alternate.

(this idea could be used to bring back teryl/janet, without lessening the heroes storyline to me)
