it's very frightening. especially when you think that laws often come to those that pay for them to come into existence. Make a few donations, get someone friendly to your cause into office and then you have an 'in' to get what you want made into law instead of what may be right

and who has no lack of money?

those very same corporations that will spy and tag and monitor folks

remember the fuss a few months ago when it was revealed that some sony music cd's had been encoded iwth spyware that would install on your pc if you copied/played it???

that's the tip of the iceburg

Every e-mail that is sent is spyed on by countries, searching through them for key words (such as bomb) to look for bad guys. People that visit 'bad' sites are logged and tracked. Sometimes this is good, they track down kiddie porn that way. but they also keep track of folks that look at bomb making sites or the like

do you have ANY idea how short of a trip it is from monitorin to find bad guys to determining that, oh folks of a certain religion are now 'bad' and must be spied on for the public safety? or how long until people who read certian books are tagged as being a threat

we are teetering on the edge of a very slippery slope to a VERY scary place

and the saddest part? most people don't even know it

I've used the dvd player in my lappy ONCE to watch a movie. and we were in the 'shack' in the mountain and really had nothing else, including no tv

when i watch a show/movie, i'm gonna use the tv set or not at all

course, i AM old fashioned. I use a pen and paper to do a lot of my writing, can actually do math on paper and - as much as i like my tech toys - have no issue getting along with out them
Isn't that funny...I did a classroom helpers course at my kids school a few years ago and one of the teachers said that by the time our childrens children start school, they won't be teaching them writing...they'll be doing everything on the computer...which had me thinking...what happens when the power goes out? I think we're becoming too relliant on computers...I love em...but they are seriously flawed!!
I don't like watching movies on the puter...we had a blackout earlier this year that went on for hours and to pass the time hubby thought it would be a real treat to put in a dvd on the laptop...the picture and sound were quite good...his laptop is a newy and has great picture quality...especially compared to my poor old pc...but it just didn't stand up to the great picture quality and surround sound from the tv...and you should have seen all of us huddle around the laptop trying to watch Nemo...there was 6 of us...in the end the battery gave out...about half way thru the movie!!

right now the one stumbling block is teh sheer overwhelming amount of information. eventually they'll figure out how to handle and use it

          exactly with the power

a pen and paper ALWAYS work (except in the dark and under water, but you get what i mean

I"m not saying all technology is evil. it isn't. what i am saying is that the power that comes iwth it needs to be handled responsibly. and while you embrace the future, you can't forget the past. newer may not always be better.

No way You can get quite large screens these days anyway. And computer monitor resolutions are much better than standard definiton tv's. Obviously high definition tv's will finally catch up to computer monitors in terms of resolution, but they aren't cheap. Of course, hooking up your computer to a large screen HDTV would be the way to go

I don't believe that that's an exaggeration...I don't trust the internet to be as safe and private as they would have us believe...I'm going with Sky on this one!! Sorry AD...I know your a wonderful computer geek...but I believe in the "big brother is watching" theory!! They're probably watching us right now...

                I don't know AD.

On one TV show that I watch on Monday (Vanished) they showed how a cell/blackberry could be traced to where the person who was being called, to an address. Now I know this is a TV show and have to supsend some belief. But this idea had to come from somewhere.

all cellphones now have GPS chips in them that, if activated, can locate your position. They started doing it after more than one cell phone user called, had been in a wreck and help couldn't find them

it was meant to save lives but in the wrong hands, it's big brother in action

same with your onstar equipped cars

If big brother is watching, perhaps TPTB are too. So. These are my demands. I'd like Sam to be leader of SG-1. Give AT some meaty eps! Give me some closure in a mini-series or movie. And FCOL get Sam and Jack together already!

All it takes is some understanding of the way it works, and safeguards against that, and you'll be right... Tracking an IP requires involvement from the Internet Service Provider and that kind of information is protected by law. It takes a warrant issued by a court for any law enforcment agency to act on that. Now if that's being circumvented, I don't think it's so much an issue with the technology involved but rather an issue with the way the laws are being regulated and treated...

And that's a real big problem at the moment...nothing is cheap...and everything is disposable...never give up on the old ways AD...they're reliable...and affordable!!

credit cards track your spending, as do debit cards. Online cookies track your browsing, e-mails are filtered for key words, people that visit certain sites are logged. traffic cameras can track a car's movements around a city, as well as a multitude of surveillance cameras. your cellphone can be tracked. any phone call made on a wireless device can be tapped into with a scanner. digital cable can log your viewing habits. libraries keep a record of what you read. if you have an onstar equipped car they can track your movements.

that's just it. we live in teh day and age of 'best justice money can buy'...and 'best laws money can buy'

circumventing those laws are easy if you make sure that you get the 'right' peopel elected.

and the only people that can put safeguards on such tampering are hte very same folks that are profiting from it - the politicians/lawmakers

This is anotehr reason i had a HUGE issue with a plot device of s9 see, i can get it back on topic
                            Spoiler:
the transponders. where the teams can be tracked anywhere and everywhere....can we even begin to go into what a HUGE violation of privacy that is???? can you honestly see sam or any of the others likeing this?

or, if they were compelled, the scariness of a govt that does that?

AD, I know that you live in another country, but has your local government put camera's at/on stop lights? Have they told you it's to monitor traffic-flow?

In my opinion it's just another invasion of your rights to see what your doing while at those stop lights. Now I have no problem with cameras being used at ATM's, banks, airports, ...,etc. But I do with these.

Yet like I said - that information is protected by law. It's not like I can just call up the credit card company and ask where Joe Blogg has been spending his money. The real issue is how those privacy laws are being treated.
Also, alot of those systems by their very nature are unsecured. Email is not so much equated as to putting a piece of paper in an envelope and sending it but as to writing your message on a postcard. There are ways to secure email, it's just that its not widely used (through ignorance, too much trouble or whatever). Alot of it comes back to the end user.

But I think we're getting a bit off topic here...
