i can't remember the ratings before season 6, but starting in that season, that's when the show moved to the scifi channel. and each season, the ratings increased *culminating in THE best ratings in season 8.* with season 9, they leveled off. with season 10, they've went down. season 9 was the first season that the show didn't 'increase' its ratings. season 10 is the first season where they've went down.
i think the ptb messed with its highly successful recipe. i think what they're serving now is too bitter for most fans' tastes.

I think the ratings slid down throughout Season 9, and the trend is simply continuing in Season 10.
Spoiler:
Here's graph showing both the number of viewers and the ratings
I made the graph from the following numbers (from another thread a few days ago)
Season 6 1.0 Rating = 0.78 Million Households
Season Ave. 1.7 = 1.33 Million Households
Season 7 1.0 Rating = 0.80 Million Households
Season Ave. 1.8 = 1.42 Million Households
Season 8-10 1.0 Rating = 1.34 Million Households
Season 8 Ave. 2.1 = 2.77 Million Households
Season 9 Ave. 1.8 = 2.47 Million Households
Season 10 Ave.* 1.5 = 2.01 Million Households
Season: Million Households, Rating Average
Season 6: 1.33, 1.7
Season 7: 1.42, 1.8
Season 8: 2.77, 2.1
Season 9: 2.47, 1.8
Season 10: 1.943, 1.45
Ep 1001 1.4
Ep 1002 1.6
Ep 1003 1.5
Ep 1004 1.3
Avg S10 so far 1.45
Season eight did great! anyone notice why the rating went down in season 9? Lets see what happened then? Hmm... Well for one Jack left. Next Mitchell showed up... Coinisidcence? I think not!

Yep, I tweaked Astro's graph a bit, the colored lines represent the beginning and end of each season. Each season the number of veiwers watching either remained the same or increased by the end of the season; but in S9 that all changed and now it seems as if viewers are dropping like flies. I may be b*tchy and disenchanted with the show, but at least I'm still here. I'm still watching every week. Could you imagine if everyone who had an issue with S9 & S10 suddenly decided not to watch this Friday? How low do you imagine the ratings would be then?

I like what you've done, Kat - you tied the series premiere and finale for each season... and it's interesting that the premiere and the finale usually score higher than the rest of the season (I supposed that's not an earthshattering surprise, but it's cool to see the data that way)
Here, I've added in Ep 1004 'Insiders' to the graph

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the premiere episode of SG-1 drew 1.7 million viewers with a 1.4 rating. If that is the case then a rating of 1.0 is equal to approximately 1.2 million viewers, so 2 million viewers would be a 1.67 and so far this season only one episode has obtained that number. I'm not positive about the new rating total, but I'm pretty sure it's not the same as last years 1,340,000.

Interesting point you have there LM. lol j/k people! I dont like being ignored! lol

I have to admit that I didn't check the numbers posted by the other GW fan (in one of the 'Season 10 episode rating' threads), I just plotted them (good thing I'm not remote piloting a spacecraft down to the surface of Mars and using the numbers given to me by someone who forgot to convert between English and metric... 'cuz then I might crash my expensive space probe instead of just landing it gently... nah... no one would let such an error happen when multimillions of dollars and years and years of time are at stake...). But, if you give me the correct figures (and each year probably needs to be checked, because if the last year is wrong, it's highly likely that other year calculations are also wrong), I can easily make the changes in my spreadsheet and the graph will automatically be corrected.
On the other graph, I extended it so that there is space to project where Season 10's ratings might go.... but to be honest, by looking at previous years, I don't think a projection is possible... the numbers bounce around too much...
And here's the graph with Kat's premiere-finale lines

Are you sure thats not one of your graphs you use to measure sismic(sp) activity in the ring of fire? lol
I wonder i you broke down the ratings by gender, what would it look like?? my feeling is that a great deal of men are leaving the show. I think that the style of the show has changed so much, and that season 9 was so campy with vala and the ori, that many guys have just been turned off by the show. Carter/Tapping has been a great draw for men to watch the show the last 8 years and now they've gone and spoiled it by down playing her. I mean they were think of 'sending' Carter to Atlantis for 10 episodes, WTH? They just don't get their own fandom.

This is a good question.
Breaking down the break down of the show by demographic. Who are they hitting and who are they missing?

I was getting the impression that more men were watching and more women were turning it off. Now the men get scantily dressed women, explosions, and action heros. Now the women don't get enough Sam, and when they do, it's not the Sam we've known from other seasons. I have no doubt that men like Sam, but she's got a legion of women followers who think she's a great character-hence this thread. There are men who post here, but most are female. At any rate, TPTB certainly are out of touch with their fanbase.
does everyone agree that season 10 is better than season 9? now, are the advertisements letting the viewers know that the show is better now? are there articles stating that the ptb worked on the mitchell and vala characters, and worked on having sam carter more up front in storylines?
if there was something unsatisfying about season 9 for some viewers, what would be the incentive to come back for a season 10? to me, the ratings are showing that there are some fans that are just not giving this show a try anymore.
sally
To be honest if I only read the articles in mags I'd think Mitchell was confirmed lead/leading man. And Vala was the new femaile lead as her guest character even took over the introduction time of the new Lead Male Action Hero. Why would I watch if I like S1-8? And wasn't happy with the direction of S9? Well, I'd just not bother to come back. Hmmmmmmm. What a shock.

ETA: oops! Mandy said something similar. GMTA I guess.
