Originally posted by golfbooyI don't necessarily think that Sam (or Daniel or Teal'c) has outgrown SG-1. At least not the SG-1 that existed for the first eight seasons. That team is still something special, something to be revered. I do think, though, that SG-1 has become something more ordinary, more commonplace in season nine. The inclusion of Mitchell as an everyman and as "just a soldier" has reduced the feeling that SG-1 is something unique.
Also, the downgrading of the whole operation (as indicated in The Ties That Bind) and the wholesale change of personnel with a new, inexperienced (in offworld matters) commander as well as a civilian doctor has reduced the "closed shop" feel of the entire SGC. It largely feels now like SGC is just some run of the mill posting where any random officer might get stationed for a while.
My point is that I don't think Sam, Daniel, or Teal'c outgrew their previous selves so much as everything else around them has become too commonplace. Of course Daniel is going to look like he should be doing more so long as he's being "led" by someone so beneath his caste. The same goes for Sam and Teal'c. The whole feeling of them being on "Mitchell's" team is unnatural. It lessens them while raising him. But like most unnatural things, it affronts the senses, too.
When you throw in the way in which Mitchell conducts himself, his mien and his deportment, it further reduces the uniqueness of the SG-1 team. Previously, each team member was a distinct individual and someone who was specifically chosen to be part of an elite squad. Now, though, TPTB have added someone who is supposed to be "like us". The problem with that is we're all not exactly SG-1 material. Having some one like the audience on the team might have been an attempt to connect with newer viewers, but all it's really done is make Sam and Teal'c and Daniel seem that much more "ahead" of Cameron. They seem out of place because they're so much more capable and, frankly, better than he is. The addition of his less than stellar skills as a soldier and leader just exacerbate this issue.
So, in summation:
Sam is still exceptional. Daniel is still exceptional. Teal'c is still exceptional. And they're still overwhelmingly cool. It's everything else that's different.
But.....WOW!!! What a post, golfbooy!!!
This more eloquently states the nuances behind the show's problems than any other post I've read! There's just something wrong about the way S9 played out.....and it's wrong on so many levels! As usual, our buddy golfbooy has summed up what we're all feeling. Our favorites are our favorites for good reasons: they have earned our admiration and affection through eight years of stress, trauma, heroic actions and great stories. Everything around them now seems commonplace, as if being the best wasn't as important as it used to be. Yeah. What he said.....

Originally posted by Skydiverthat's what drew me to sam in the first place. she wasn't there just to be the token damsel in distress or the 'girl that dies to send the hero on his quest', she was an equal part of the team. she was no more important or less important than anyone else. she was a girl that was one of the guys
she was a real representation of women today. a woman that didn't trade on her cleavage, connections or bedroom antics to get ahead. she worked hard and honorably and accomplished her goal
Had TPTB made it so that Sam lost command to Mitchell because he had the right friends and/or because Landry didn't want a woman leading his flagship team and shown clearly that she had been wronged but that there wasn't much she could do about it (and obviously rectified the situation by late Season Nine or early Season Ten at the very latest) it would have been one thing, but they genuinely don't seem to see anything wrong with the sexist message their choice to remove Sam from command is sending.

[QUOTE=scifi_girl]Originally posted by AmberLMYeah, it's called "Phasing out in favour of a newer model" and it stinks! QUOTE]
Yeah i agree with that. i can kind of understand bringing in new people, but i think they've done a bad job of it. i think they brought mitchell in too fast, and too many new characters at one time. not just that though i feel that even if you bring in new characters you have to respect the old characters, and i just feel like they havent done that.
I would have recommended bringing in only Landry as general at the beginning - send another SG team along with Daniel, Teal'c and (if absolutely necessary) Vala to have adventures then bring Sam back in "Beachhead", leave her in command and then, during Season Ten, or late Season Nine at the very earliest, introduce Major Mitchell as the new addition to SG-1 - and for pity's sake come up with a decent backstory for him.
Trying to change too much too quickly can be a surefire path to disaster.

Hope still shines but... it doesn't look so good now does it? It's a shame really that we the most loyal fans should feel like that.

On the bright side, I might never have started writing my own Stargate stories had Season Nine not been such a disappointment and I like writing Stargate.
I even started an AU Season Nine at one point. I've only got the first couple of parts done, so I don't know if that'll ever be continued.
